| | LL] ' a 3 { 3) { |) 28 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, December 21,1993 Bantam Bs get sweet revenge against Lindsa On Dec. 18, Port Perry Tech- stars travelled to Manvers to play in the Manvers Tourna- ment. Techstars first match was against Manvers. The first peri- od saw a lot of end-to-end hock- ey with both teams having nu- merous chances to score but were robbed by the goalies. Manvers got the game opener late in the second period. At 2:37 on the clock, Port was awarded a rare penalty shot. Gavin Baxter was up to the task as he slid the puck between the pads of the Manvers goalie. With 1:13 remaining on the clock, Manvers got a lucky one. The Techstars battled back as Shane Norton worked the puck out from behind the net to Matt Philps who made it look easy, tying the game 2-2. As time was running out, the Techstars were sure they were heading into overtime but with 20 seconds left on the board, Manvers managed to break the tie. Jamie Trick was between the pipes for this one, coming up with lots of key saves to keep the score close. Game two saw Port Perry Techstars meet Omemee head- on. The first period was a see- saw affair for awhile with both goalies getting a tune-up with lots of shots coming their way. Early in the second, Todd Parry and Ashley VanSchelven put a great set-up to Shane Nor- ton and it was a 1-0 hockey game. There wasn't any scoring in the third period as the horn sounded to end the game 1-0. Recording the shutout for Port was John Babcock, receiving MVP for the game. Game three was a match-up with the Oshawa Red Wings. A win here would advance either to the finals. Oshawa dominat- ed the game in the early going, scoring two in the first. Oshawa potted another in the second pe- riod. The third period saw Oshawa and Port exchange goals. The lone marker for Port was scored by Trevor Smith and a nice one at that, with a blast from centre ice. Port just ran out of steam. Mike Heasman was presented the MVP award for his hard work. : On Sunday, Dec. 19, Port Perry Techstars found revenge on Lindsay 8-1. Shane Norton scored Port's first, after picking up a loose puck, assists going to Ryan Puckrin and Matt Blowe. Aaron Levy made his presence known as he potted the next one on a clean pass from Robert Gracie. Just as the horn sounded, Todd Parry made a quick pass to Shane Norton who walked in and put Port ahead 3-0. Port allowed Lindsay to score their only goal in the second while Port kept the pressure on, adding five more goals. Sin- gles went to Todd Parry, Robert Gracie, Matt Philps, Gavin Baxter and Ryan Puckrin. As- sisting on the goals were Shane Norton, Robert Gracie and Tre- vor Smith. Lindsay was kept off the scoreboard in the third but so was Port. John Babcock played an outstanding game between the pipes, winning 8-1. Port Perry Techstar Ban- tams will be hosting a tourna- ment on Dec. 28 in Port. ModJacks add another win From Page 25 Port Perry opened the scoring on a powerplay at 4:22 of the first period. After moving the puck around nicely in the Bul- lets' zone, Jason Cochrane found Keith Leslie in the slot. Bobcaygeon's Mike Burchell made the first save on Leslie, but couldn't stop the big centre from scoring on the rebound. It was Cochrane who then made it 2-0 when he cut in from the right side and collected a re- bound, steering it into the open net after Burchell was caught out of position. Shawn Larocque It remained 2-0 until 3:53 of the second period when de- fenceman Kevin McDonald picked up the puck at his own blue line, moved through three Bullet defenders and poked the puck through the legs of a charging Burchell. McDonald had a strong night for Port Perry, also picking up an assist, despite collecting 16 minutes in penalties. Laird then made it 4-0 when he picked up a rebound from Brad Moase's point shot at 12:23 of the second period and beat Burchell cleanly. Less than a minute later, it was Laird again, making it 5-0 on the powerplay with the pretti- est goal of the night. Gavin Co- chrane got the puck to Steve Staniland in the corner. Stani- land made a perfect pass to Laird in the slot who one-timed a shot through Burchell's legs. Staniland, who had three points on the night, gave Port Perry a six-goal lead at 1:35 of the third, when his wrist shot from the top of the faceoff circle beat Burchell high to the block- er side. Brad MacArthur round- ed out the scoring at 13:40 with a shorthanded goal. With Ga- vin Cochrane in the penalty box for roughing, Jeremy Ross' fore- checking allowed him to feed MacArthur who fired it past Burchell to make the final 7-0. Though somewhat overshad- owed by the offence and the per- Por Steve Laird formance of Larocque in the Modack goal, it was the Port Perry penalty killing that de- serves a lot of the credit for keeping the Bullets off the scoreboard. On three separate occasions, Bobcaygeon enjoyed a two-man advantage only to be turned away by Larocque and the ModJacks' penalty killers. The win moves Port Perry's record to 12-6-2 and, with only 10 games left on the schedule, affords them an excellent chance to finish in top spot overall, thereby earning what should be a favorable first- round playoff match-up. Modacks' Facts: In what some hockey fans may have seen as the highlight of the night, Gavin Cochrane and Bobcaygeon's Peter Henderson dropped the gloves and went toe-to-toe in a real heavyweight tilt. Though neither man was injured in the bout, Cochrane clearly landed the more telling blows. The MoJacks travel to Bowmanville to meet the Ea- gles tonight at 7:30 in what promises to be a very interest- ing contest. Manvers went to their skating game right off the bat and never looked back as they defeated Ennismore by a score of 9-2. As usual the Manvers goalie played well. Right, Carey? Man- vers worked hard in this game proving that team play does pay off. The addition of JoAnne Moore to the lineup is giving Manvers mere depth and the team welcomes her. Nice to have you with us. On Saturday, Dec. 18, the Manvers Maltheb Farms Tweens played host to Ennis- more. It didn't take the Farm- ers long to get things going as Lisa Nesbitt fed Krista Came- ron with a perfect pass as Kris- ta scores to give Manvers the early lead 1-0 at the 14:44 mark. Less than a minute later Manvers struck again as Ashley Notenboom set up Krista Came- ron in front and see you later as Manvers goes out in front 2-0. Manvers was playing well with both sets of defence, Lisa Nes- bitt, Tammi Limbers, Lindsey Ingram and JoAnne Moore all doing a fine job keeping the Speedy Tweens from Ennis- more off the score sheet. At 9:17 Mandi Richmond set up Krista Cameron and she wasted no time in scoring to complete her hat trick and give Manvers a 3- 0 lead. At 8:02, Mandi Rich- mond took control of the ring at centre ice, up to Ashley Noten- boom (Boomer!) who fired a nice pass right onto Krista Came- ron's stick and she wasted no time in making a night deposit to give Manvers a 4-0 lead. At 6:30 Linsey Ingram scored a nice unassisted goal to give Manvers Maltheb Farms Tweens a commanding 5-0 lead. Miranda Small, Alison Chap- man and Julie Kennedy were passing the ring well and just missing on oh so many chances. Finally, at 2:52, with the first period winding down, Alison Chapman stole the ring, hit Ju- lie Kennedy with a good pass, ~ Manvers. over to Miranda Small who fired one past the Ennismore goalie to make the score 6-0. Ennismore finally scored with 43 seconds remaining in the pe- riod to give Manvers a 6-1 lead. Julie Kennedy started the second period off in a hurry when she scored at 14:09 unas- sisted. Forty-three seconds lat- er, Krista Cameron found a loose ring deep in the Ennis- ~ more zone as she fires one be- hind the Ennismore goalie for her fifth goal of the game and a 8-1 lead. Ennismore scored at 12:04 to close the gap to 8-2. Lisa Nesbitt made it 9-2 when she scored an unassisted goal at 11:49. The alleycat, Alison Chapman was- patrolling the boards well and doing some nice forechecking causing En- nismore to make some untime- ly turnovers and making for some good scoring chances for Miranda Small scored a nice goal at 9:25 for her second goal of the game. The Boomer (Ashley Notenboom) scored a pretty goal at 7:17 or should we say "field goal" as she .sent a soft floater through the air, over the goalie's head and into the net, "Nice Shot" to make it 11-2 for the Farmers. . At 4:25 Ennismore scored to : make the score 11-3. With the period winding down, Julie Kennedy slammed one home with 14'seconds left on-the clock : to make the final score Man- vers 12 - Ennismore 3. Playing in goal for Manvers was Mi- chele Branton. Honorable men- tion for good hustle goes to Krista Cameron and Miranda Small. JoAnne Moore and Lin- sey Ingram get the nod for good defensive effort.
