12- PORT-PERRY STAR - Wednesday, December 29,1993 Letter to the editor Writer way off the mark To the Editor: Thomas Walkom's column of Dec. 7, 1993 (New Medicine Cuts are Poor Medicine for Health Care Ills) made some valid points about preventing disease and looking at preven- tative medicine, but is, com- pletely off the mark about doc- tors wanting to delist the "Annual Check-up"" in order to make more money, or the idea that doctors are in favor of a two-tiered medical system! These are certainly NOT the ob- Jectives of 'the Family Physi- cians of Ontario. The Ontario College of Fami- ly Physicians represents over 5,000 family physicians in the province of Ontario. We have long been interested in preven- tative medicine. This is a very important part of our training programs across Ontario. WEST ly Physicians strongly believe that there has to be, within the provincial medicare systém, regular preventative medicine assessments where disease pre- vention, lifestyle modification, and appropriate screening pro- cedures are done. Having the family physician doing all these preventative procedures at the appropriate time is better health/wellness care and more cost effective than splitting peo- ple and their body parts into various specialty screening clin- ics with all the infrastructure these clinics need for support. Family Physicians do not be- lieve in a two-tiered healthcare system, but rather a health/ wellness care system which is available to all the citizens of Family Physicians feels that a periodic health assessment MUST remain in the OHIP Schedule of Benefits. The Ontario College of Fami- ly Physicians also feels that "de- listing" is a short-sighted, knee- jerk reaction to a very serious problem. The solution lies in re- forming the current system and the way it is managed, not merely tinkering with it here and there. The Ontario College of Family Physicians is willing to work with the Government, and all stakeholders to ensure accessible care for all the citi- zens of Ontario. Family Physi- cians want to be part of the so- lution, not part of the problem. Yours truly, Ontario regardless of their fi=====~" GG.
