"A Family Tradition for 127 Years" Nau PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, January 4,1994 - 25 Emiel's wins 7-4 Sub-zero temperatures, a lit- tle snow, and a 7 a.m. start, couldn't cool down Lawrence Cook and his Emiel's team- mates. After sporting about an vight-game losing streak, the boys decided that was enough and were determined from the drop of the puck that this game was theirs to be had. Reid McTaggart started . things off by setting Lawrence Cook up for his first goal at 7:52 of the first period. Solid defence by Kam Cooper, Paul Brain, Nick Ostafichuk, David Bond- ser and Mark Sauter kept the Larocque boys at bay while their teammates Joe Van Camp, Chad Lance, Tim Wray and Lawrence Cook built up a op lead, to end the second peri- od. Larocque"s Chris Jones an- swered right back with a pair of goals to start the third period. Persistent forechecking paid oft as Brad Monsma and Jeff Har- rison banged home two more but Lawrence Cook who had the "hottest hands" in the building scored his third and game- winning goal to end Larocque's rally. Tom Boyd rounded out the scoring for Emiel's to make the final score 7-4. Set-up man Reid McTaggart had three help- ers while Mark Sauter had two and a single to Joey Van Camp. A very entertaining and inci- dent-free hockey game to watch, boys! "Sportsmanship plays a big part in keeping the game fun." Remembering this you'll always go out a "winner". Eagles struggling Since last report, the Port Perry Precision Construction Midget Eagles have had their ups and downs, winning a pair of league games, and dropping four tournament and exhibition games. On Dec. 13, the Eagles hosted Uxbridge and emerged 7-4 win- ners. Scoring details are una- vailable but Scott Heasman was an offensive power for the Eagles, scoring twice on rocket blasts from the point. Heasman completed his hat trick on an end-to-end rush, and had an- other one result in a nice re- bound goal for Daryl Bourgeois. Newmarket visited the Scu- gog Arena on Dec. 15 and shut out the Eagles 7-0. The Eagles tied the Oshawa Red Wings 4-4 on Dec. 18 at North Oshawa, no details avail- able for the game. A re-scheduled league game had Port in Lindsay on Dec. 23, and a short-handed Eagle line- up came up with a solid effort to record a 3-2 win. Jeff and Jon Jamieson and Kenton LeFort were added to the roster and all played solidly. Ian Shrigley was the big gun with a pair of goals and an assist. LeFort had two assists, Jon Jamieson picked up the winning goal on an excel- lent effort, and Jeremy Norton and Ian McCready each had single assists. The Eagles then went to the Silver Stick Midget A qualifier in Bramalea, and despite com- ing close twice, came home without a win. The players will undoubtedly need to respond differently to questionable offi- ciating if they are to go far in tough playoiffames this spring. The first game was against league rival, Trenton. The Ea- gles had only 10 skaters, but showed good stamina in re- bounding from a 4-1 deficit to close to 4-3 before Trenton struck for a lucky goal on a long deflection with just under two minutes to play. Chad Kearns led the offence with a goal and an assist. Bourgeois and Craig Laird also scored while Shri- gley, McCready, Sean Ellis, Jer- emy Geer, and Jo Broadworth recorded single assists. Kyle Simms was outstanding in the Port net, stoning Trenton re- peatedly during Port's rally. Game two against Riverside was a different matter. River- side counted six times In the opening minutes as the la- gles let frustrating officiating get to them. Ellis and Jay King finally got Port on the board, but Riverside cruised to a 7-2 win. Geer, with a pair, and Shrigley had the assists. Drawing the same referee three straight games, Port was in trouble right away against the Oshawa Bruins, in a game which was ended prematurely when Eagles ran out of players, with the Bruins up 5-3. Laird, Geer and Bourgeois scored the Port goals. Assists weren't available at writing. The winners of Port Perry Minor Hockey's "Leaf For a Day" draw were announced on Decem- ber 30 at Scugog Arena. The winners of the grand prize were Bill Hall, from Port Perry and Da- vid Hammond, from Orono. Second prize went to Matthew Tillaart, of Ashburn, and Geoff Daw, of Whitby. Third prize winners were Matthew Tillaart, of Ashburn, and Jack Cook, of Peterbo- rough. Fourth prize went to Jim Munro, from Sunderland, and Nellie Wall, from Seagrave. Priz- es in the seller's catgory went togieorge Brad, the Weisflock family, Jana Ferguson, and Har- vey Williams. Tween As split weekend double header On Sunday Port's Guardian Tween "As" enjoyed their first séason"s win over Markham 7- 5. Bonni-Jo Norton pinned an Amanda Wakeford pass in the midst of the Markham defence for Port's first goal. Next, Ja- nine Hammond scored her first of three, assisted by Jenn Elliot and Brooke Shanley. As penal- ties took their toll, Markham soon gained a 4-3 lead in the sec- ond period but Amanda Wake- ford spiritely evened up the score again. : . Several solid saves by Port's Lauren Christie gave her team the lift they needed. Then Brooke Shanley scored her first of the season - from Bonni-Jo Norton and Janine Hammond. Janna Senyk spotted Janine Hammond who scored once more forcing Markham to pull their goalie with 30 seconds left. However, Jennifer Elliot's speed broke up Markham's fi- nal rush and the icing was a sharp empty net goal from Diane Vanderligt. The quick FIREPLACES 0% Until Jan. 15, 1994 thinking and close checking by the Guardian girls set up the success in this game. Sunday's second game pitted Port's Guardian squad against the No. 1 team in our C.O.R.L. loop. In Oshawa, Amanda Wake- ford allied a quick go-ahead goal. The lead held up for six minutes until three quick goals put Oshawa ahead to stay. Ja- nine Hammond scored two more past them. and ping- OVER RIDGE FIREPLACE WAREHOUSE 5 * WOOD » NATURAL GAS + PROPANE «PELLETS * STOVES « AIRTIGHT INSERTS Sales - Service - Certified Installations ponged the crossbars too before the game finished. However, even with Laura Hooker and Alechia Cracknell switching all about to fill in the penalty-laden spaces, ours was a 9-3 loss this time. OK girls - chins up and sticks down.
