RE A i ---- " ~~ a r-- INE WTI Te - oT 26 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, January 4,1994 "Scugog"s Community Newspaper of Choice" Juvenile action From Page 22 Mike Tripp tried to gep a little fancy with the puck? Rather than score on his own net, he got the assist! He bounced one off the post to a wide open oppo- nent who graciously put it in the net - killing any hopes of a shutout. Mariposa's second and final goal seemed to be a harm- less shot from the corner. Just the same, Port was going to the championship. Because of round-robin play, Port met Uxbridge in the final for arematch. Perhaps Port was a little tired from already play- ing all day and the two week rest. Just the same, Uxbridge was In the same boat, but they had the desire and played well enough to win the trophy. Ux- bridge jammed in their first goal with six minutes left in the first, and scored a harmless looking goal early in the second. Port started to mount a come- back late in the second when Ridgway scored Port's first by backhanding a rebound in the net. The assists went to Itzge- rald and Heasman. However, the third period was all Ux- bridge's and they crushed Port's attempt to tie the game up when they scored again. The fi- nal was 3-1. The Key-Bar Juvies wish to thank Steven Stiles for helping out so far this season, as Steve 15 heading west in the new year to find some work. Port will miss his physical play and his rocket-of-a-shot. Port's next games will be down in Moore- town - Jn a three day tourna- ment. The win rep- resents something positive that head coach Brad Menzies and his club can draw on after a dis- appointing end to 1993. Despite compiling a 5-3 record in the month of Decem- ber, the MoJacks were plagued with injuries, illness, and two unanticipated personnel chang- es that saw forwards Brad Ma- cArthur and Shannon Todd leave the team. Though not at liberty to dis- cuss the subject at length, Men- zies did make it clear that the Modacks organization had no intentions of making any player changes, and that MacArthur and Todd made the decision to leave the team on their own. The loss of two forwards leaves a distinct hole in Port Perry's offensive line, one that Menzies would dike filled with another strong winger. Shannon Todd "We have four good centre- men," said Menzies, "but, (due in part to losing Todd and Ma- cArthur) we've been forced to" play Jason Cochrane on the wing, so we're really lacking a winger." As a result, Menzies' bench is now shorter by two forwards, forcing him to double shift players. He did just that Sun- day night against the Mer- chants and as the game pro- gressed, the extra work took its toll on his players. After building a 6-0 lead through the first 50 minutes, the Modacks started to tire. They gave up four unanswered goals in the final 10 minutes, es- caping with a 6-4 victory. "I think they just started run- ning out of gas," said Menzies after watching his club come close to squandering a six-goal lead. "We were all over them in the first two periods but there's just not enough guys to put out so some guys were taking every other shift." Compounding Menzies. man- power problem was the loss of Steve Laird in the first period. With Port Perry having just taken the lead on a goal by Clair Cornish, both Laird and Little Britain's Kyle Highman were tossed for fighting, only af- ter the two were separated twice by the officials. The Modacks went up 2-0 late in the first period. Defence- man Kevin McDonald looked more like a forward as he car- ried the puck over the Mer- chants' line, slipped a defender then went around goaltender Don Fleming, scoring at the 18:50 mark.. Nathan Brown put Port Perry ahead by three at 7:16 of the second period after Iattle Britain turned the puck over in their own zone. Keith Leslie picked up the loose puck and, drawing the lone Merchants' defender, slid a pass across to Brown who one-timed a shot past Fleming. Brad MacArthur Little Britain all but sealed their own fate when Derek Kea took a major penalty for high- 'sticking Port Perry's Todd Den- nis at the 9:22 mark. The Mo- Jacks capitalized twice on the ensuing powerplay including the eventual game winner. Both goals were scored by Ja- son Cochrane after a fine dis- play of puck control by the Mo- Jacks' powerplay unit. Merchants' Ryan West re- placed Fleming in goal in the third period and gave up Port Perry's sixth goal just 56 sec- onds later. ModJacks' rookie Ian Titterton picked up a loose puck at the side of the Little Britain goal and jammed it by West to round out the Port Perry scor- ing. ModJacks' netminder Rick Hutchinson had a fine outing, holding the opposition scoreless until the 8:29 mark of the third period. Merchant's Chad Des- jardin scored the first of his two goals on the night by beating Hutchinson to the glove side with a high wrist shot from the slot. After Tyler Jenkins scored at 12:36, Chris Locke scored a powerplay goal at 13:46 to cut Port Perry's lead to three. Des- Jardin's second goal at 17:56 made it 6-4 but that was as close as the Merchants would get, despite a valiant comeback attempt. The win moves the ModJacks record ,to 13-8-2, good for 28 points and third place behind Uxbridge and the first place Bowmanville Eagles, with sev- en games remaining in the reg- . ular season schedule. ModJacks' Facts Jason Cochrane led the way Sunday night with two goals and one assist. Also enjoying a multiple-point night were Clair Cornish (one goal, two assists), Kevin McDonald and Ian Tit- terton (each with a goal and an assist), Keith Leslie (three as- sists) and Todd Dennis (two as- sists)...The Modacks will be well represented at this year's all-star game to be held Satur- day at 8 p.m. in Little Britain. Forwards Keéith Leslie and Clair Cornish, and defensemen Kevin McDonald and Gavin Co- chrane will take part in the game with all proceeds going to the league's injured players' fund...Modacks' netminder Shawn Larocque will probably be out for at least two weeks as he recovers from injuries suf- fered in a serious auto accident in December...
