HVIDSTEN 7 PORT PERRY STAR 'New recruits chosen or local fire halls The Scugog Fire Department has hired its new recruits. In total, 12 new firefighters were added to the volunteer de- partment. James Bursey, Ken Parker, Scott Bowers, and Fred Richard were hired to serve at Hall 1 in Port Perry. New recruits at Hall 21in Cae- garea include Ed Mateo, James Gardiner, Lee Gonnermann, Dawn Roberts, Noel Diaz, Brent McMillen, Ron Jorgensen, and Mike Kearnan. Seventy Scugog Township residents applied for the 12 po- gitions available. Twenty-four applicants were not considered for the job because they lived more than three minutes away from the firehalls. "~The remaining 46 applicants were subjected to a physical evaluation, written test, and in- terview, and the top scorers were hired, said Chief Don Steele. The recruits will begin work on January 3. All of them will undergo a 40-hour recruitment training course before being al- lowed torespond to any calls. A review of the probationary firefighters will take place twice over the next year. Calling the recruits "very in- terested and very keen", Chief Steele said "the township will benefit" from their enthusiasm and from the fact that the two halls are now back up to full strength.
