2 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, January 11,1994 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Waiting for federal gov't Ward structure By Scott\Anderson Port Perry Star Township officials say it's a matter of "wait and see" con- cerning the federal govern- ments infrastructure program. Councillors argue it is too ear- ly to determin& which projects will be eligible for the federal government's Public Works Program. During the electidn, Liberal leader Jean Chretien promised to inject $6 billion into a two- year program in which the prov- inces and the municipalities shareequally in the cost. With theelection of the Liber- al government, many munici- palities quickly compiled their wish lists but have been left holding these lists, uncertain of the specifics. 'It's a wait and see thing," said Ward 2 Councillor Marilyn Pearce, adding they won't be able to proceed until the specit- ics are announced. Councillor Pearce expects this wait to end with the speech from thethrone next week. In the mean time, the munici- palities are compiling their lists and prioritizing the projects. Mayor Howard Hall said a number of the committees have met in the past few weeks to dis- cuss certain projects, but re- fused to comment on the con- tents of the list. "I don't want to raise expecta- tions. These are very prelimi- nary projects," he said. Mayor Hall said they would not make public the list of pro- posed projects until the town- ship has a ¢lear understanding of what qualifies. But the mayor did say that the Roads Committee has 10 to 12 projects in mind and has pri- oritized four projects. Christmas tree drop-off runs from January 10-24 With the holiday season over, many residents are faced with the problem of what to do with their Christmas tree. Christmas trees can be dropped off at Putsey Park in Caesarea, the Nestleton Com- munity Centre, Blackstock Are- na parking lot, Greenbank Park, Seagrave Park, Scugog Is- land Works Depot and the Township Works Depot on Re- gional Road 8. The dates for disposal are January 10 to 24. Port Perry and Prince Albert residents are asked to leave their trees out for pick-up. All decorations and tinsel must be removed. When the program was an- nounced in October, Councillor Pearce identified improve- ments on Mary Street as one of the projects on the list. Other projects being ban- tered about the council table were an addition to the arena, new municipal offices, a ban- quet facility, the completion of Scugog Centre and dredging of Lake Scugog near the govern- ment docks. "No project should be consid- ered as non-eligible," Regional Councillor Yvonne Christie told council. "The can is open now. Anything goes." Snowmobile thefts are on the increase Durham Regional Police are warning snowmobilers to be cautious following a number of thefts. According to Inspector Nancy Desjardine there have been nine reported thefts this winter. Inspector Desjardines sug- gests that the vehicles should be properly locked and secured when notin use. Also when purchasing a used vehicle, the potential buyer should do a proper check of the registration. . You didn't choose your face. But you can at least choose your glasses. Although the process is the same as other municipal elec- tions, the ward structure in Scu- gog has changed. A bylaw, which came into ef- fect January 1, 1994 altered the ward structure in the township and eliminated the Area Coun- cillor position. There are now five ward councillor positions. The number of positions up for grabs does not change, however. Although registration began January 1, Mr. Cuddie said no- body has come forward to de- clare their intentions at this point. "I haven't heard anything at this point. There's always been await and see attitude," he said. Although he has not had any indication, he noted at least two in '94 councillors may be forced to al- ter their plans due to ill health. "The tragedy of illness has thrown a shroud over the inter- est," he said. The months of August and September are historically the dates in which the registration action is the heaviest. He doesn't expect this election to be any different. "Scugog has always had a very keen interest and I don't see 1994 being any exception. In fact, there might be a lot of in- terest depending on a lot of cir- cumstances," he said. : Despite the relatively simple process in becoming an elected official, Mr. Cuddie cautioned thatitis noeasyroad. "You just can't throw your hat into the ring and expect to get elected. It must be a methodical process. To get elected is an ef- fort." ' Keep Your New Year's Resolution to Lose Weight.
