At the end of the first, we were very fortunate to be down by only one goal. Our opponents went two up early in the second on a power play goal while Mike Heasman was finishing up time for rough- ing but 15 seconds later, Gavin Baxter decided enough was enough and took a pass from Matt Phillips and fired a back- hander home off the New Ham- burg goalie"s mask to close the gap within one. The oppositiorrregained their two-goal lead again with 4:36 remaining in the second while Matt Phillips sat in the penalty box. One minute later, Shane Norton tipped in a Phillips' slap The Sr. Rebels Basketball team has been getting ready for the rest of their season and this weekend's Port Perry Star Clas- sic, by playing in four tourna- ments. They have reached the Conso- lation Final in two and the Championship Final at Cour- tice before narrowly losing to Ajax 48-46. The team's record, against competition from across Ontario, is 9-9. They are 2-0 in league. Gary Norton, Jeremy Luke, Todd Smart and Paul Benton have played well at guard, while John Sanchez. Jeremy Port shot to bring Port within one. Early in the third, our oppo- nents went up by two goals while Matt Phillips was in the sin bin once again, sitting out a double minor. With 2:38 re- maining in the third, Matt Phil- lips took a pass from Mike Heasman and Shane Norton at centre and skated in on the op- ponent's net to bring the Tech- stars again to within one. Late in the third, with time running out, coach Jamieson pulled the goalie to go with the extra at- tacker and with five seconds left, Matt Baxter fed the puck to Matt Phillips who tied the game up with a wrap around goal to force overtime. Port completely dominated the overtime and finally won the game 5-4 when captain Todd Parry dug the puck out of the corner and fed it to Shane who put the game away and Hartin, and Kent Jamieson have been steady at forward. The Rebel's answer to the twin towers, under the basket, are Steven Parish and Chad Ven- ning. This weekend, teams from Huntsville, Orillia, Peterbo- rough, Lindsay, Courtice, Sut- ton and Stouffville will give the Rebels a strong competitive field. The Rebels could face both Courtice and Sutton in either LOSSA or RYSSA competition, both of which will be hosted at Port Perry High School. Games start Friday after- noon. at the high school. Cour- sent Port into the A Division. Late Saturday night, the Techstars seemed to be in a par- ty mood rather than a playing mood and were content to watch their opponents play. The Port boys helped the Burford team by shooting in one of Burford's first three goals. At the end of the first period, Burford were out in front by four goals to zip. Coach Jamieson, to say the least, was not impressed. Bur- ford led 5-0 when Matt Baxter scored unassisted to narrow the gap to four. In the third period, Norton backhanded one past the opponent's goalie with as- sists going to Matt Blowe and Matt Phillips to make the score 6-2. Late in the third, Shane stick handled through the en- tire team to bring Port within three but Burford then fired one into Port's empty net. The final score Burford 7, Port 3. Port Perry Star Rebels Classic is this weekend tice plays Stouffville at 2 p.m. while the host Rebels play at 3:15 against Lindsay, followed by matehes with Kenner Colle- giate against Orillia and Sutton matching up with Huntsville. Entry fee to the games is $1. Finals go at 4:30 p.m. Satur- day for the Consolation and 6 p.m. Saturday for the Champi- onship, with semi-finals start- ing at 9 a.m. Saturday morning. Figure skaters find success at competition The Port Perry Figure Skat- ing Club had a strong showing at the Uxbridge Dinoskate com- petition which was held Dec. 28 at the Uxbridge arena. Some of the winners were, Sa- rah Ballagh - 1st in Pre-Novice C; Chloe Desmarais - 1st in Juvenile C, Marc Desmarais - 1st in Novice Men's A, Melanie Hawkins - 2nd in Juvenile C, Pamela Armstrong - 2nd in Pre- liminary Ladies A, and Ashley Faux - 4th in Preliminary La- dies B. Our congratulations to our participants on a very strong performance. - Recently the club held test day and all tried tests were passed. Ashlea Jones passed her Jr. Bronze Freeskate, Lind- say Wilson passed her Prelimi- nary Freeskate and 1st figure, and Pamela Armstrong passed the Dutch Waltz. Congratula- tions. Port Perry Figure Skating Club has approximately 110 boys and girls ranging in age from three to 18 years old regis- tered this year, and this con- sists of a range from beginner skaters to competitive level. We have a coaching staff consisting of four professional coaches who are hard at work teaching the children to skate. Anyone inter- ested in half season member- ships, which start immediately, are asked to call 985-4372 for in- formation. Auto Wreckers win consolation at tournament Whitby Auto Wreckers were Consolation winners at the Atom Tournament in Keane on Dec. 29. After losing the first game 4-0 to Haliburton the team faced Cobourg to start the second round. After a scoreless first pe- riod Cobourg took an early two goal lead in the second. The Port Perry boys prevailed and tied it up late in the second on goals by Tan Bonser and Robbie Tavlor. Cobourg went ahead with six minutes left to play in the third but again our side tied it up with 1:27 left in regulation time after lifting the goalie for an ex: tra attacker. Beau .Jolicoeur scored assisted by Schewaga and Vernest. In the ensuing shoot-out both teams remained tied and a sud: den death shoot-out was re quired. Steven Schewaga scored and 1t was on to the championship game. In the final Lakefield provid- ed the competition, and another defensive battle was underway. After two scoreless periods Lakefield took the early lead and again the Whitby boys came back with Greg Lansdell scoring with three minutes left, with assists by Mathew Tillart and Beau Jolicoeur to end regu- lation play. Another shoot-out produced a second goal by Darren Royle and one by Lakefield. The pres- sure mounted as Schewaga again moved in on the Lakefield netminder and the lLakefield skater moved toward Patrick Derrne in the Whitby net. Sche- waga scores! Derrne makes the save and the boys win the game. [Exciting hockey left the fans and parents exhausted. Thanks to the boys for some excellent hockey.
