OS SNR IN NR kr RTT 000 HAO REL HR GE 5. SR B88 a --o-- | | : "A Family Tradition for 127 Years" LY PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, January 11,1994 - 33 On Thursday, Jan. 6 we had a home game against Uxbridge. First period saw some great de- fensive hockey by Jason How- arth, John Burnett, Scott Dun- can and Mike Dalby. Uxbridge got a little confused and started to lay the lumber to Port. With some great coaching and heads up play by our guys, Uxbridge ad some penalties. Second period was still a scoreless game and still some NHL type penalties by Ux- bridge. Third period Port came out to win and at 5:32 of the third Matt McGarry scored, assists to Burnett and Houthuys. Port de- cided not to quit and got a sec- ond goal by Gerard Timmers, assists to Mike LeFort and Tyl- er Houthuys. The game ended 2-0 Port. Here's to playing for a great team that shows great sportsmanship and common sense. On Friday we travelled to Lit- tle Britain for an exhibition game against the Oshawa State Farm Canadians. Port came out with win intheir eyes and hand- ed Oshawa a 9-1 defeat. Goals came by Mike Milligan, Hou- thuys, Ian Garnett and Ryan Haslam. Assists to Haslam, Le- Fort, Garnett and Timmers. Hat trick to Trevor Weisflock along with an assist. We needed this win to pump us up for our Uxbridge tournament on the weekend. Our first game on Sat- urday saw us play Trenton. The game saw some great passes and great defensive plays in 'both ends. Trenton went ahead 2-0 in the first. But Port, with some great determination came back to make it a tie with goals by Houthuys and a great in front of the net goal by Milligan, assists to Mike Wiseman, LeFort, Has- lam and Burnett. Trenton forced the play in all three peri- ods, but great goal tending by Shawn Martin and Ryan Woods kept the game close. With only seconds left in the game Tren- ton scored to win the game. Our guys played very well. Congratulations go to the coaches Rich LeFort, Bob Dalby and. Bill Weisflock for great work. Our second game saw us play Uxbridge, all you had to do was go into the dressing room and see how our guys were pumped up for this game. This game saw some great end to end hockey. Port ended up putting Uxbridge out of the tournament with a 4- 2 win and some heads up hock- ey by the whole team. Goals and assists went to LeFort with the great hat trick and a well de- served one at that, also Haslam, McGarry and Wiseman. Way to go guys, this was just a little pay back. Sunday we travelled back to Uxbridge to play for the cham- pionship. Port came out flying hard against Stouffville and at 8:29 of the first we took a 1-0 lead and this stood up until the third period. Great goal to Weis- flock assists to Garnett and Burnett. Stouffville tied the game up with only 2:52 left in the game. After four on four, three on three, and two on two, the game ended with a one on one goal by Stouffville. Although we lost the game we as parents can say win or lose, thanks kids for a great tournament and thanks for alot of great hockey. Also a big thanks to the coach- es for putting together in our eyes, a winning team. Peewees crush On Jan. 2, the Legionaires travelled to Lindsay to play their second game against the Lindsay Peewee team...our first game of 1994. This game turned out be very one-sided in Port's favor. We soundly outplayed, outshot and outscored the Lind- say squad. Two minutes into the first pe- riod, Troy Campbell tipped a Glenn McCready bullet from the blue line, past the Lindsay goalie. A minute later, Seth Gray received a pass from Jon Froats from centre and was gone past everyone and Port had their second goal. The Le- gionaires seemed content with this lead and the rest of the pe- riod was uneventful. Two minutes into the second, Derek Tindall carried the puck behind the net and threw it in front where Jon made no mis- take finding the mark. Two minutes later, Danny Lyons buried a wrist shot, assisted by Derek and Ian Parliament to make it 4-0 for Port. The team settled in again, content with just two more goals in the sec- ond. During the flood, the boys found that the coaches weren't impressed with two or three minutes of good hockey per pen- od and promised to improve their effort in the third. Im- prove they did and when the dust settled, Port had scored geven more unanswered goals to beat Lindsay 11-0. | Seven seconds into the third, Adam Jones shot the puck Lindsay 11-0 ahead from the opening faceoff to Derek, who made no mistake, raising the score to 5-0. Adam Hobbs then let one go at the net that appeared to be screened, assisted by Adam J. Our next goal came from Scott Jeffrey with some help from Adam H. and Casey vanSchagen. At the 3:19 mark, the Legionaires real- ly poured it on and scored three goals in 31 seconds, Adam J. from Derek and Casey, Seth from Glenn and Shane Savage (everybody got in on the scor- ing) and Derek from Seth and Jon. Our 11th goal came at 1:10 from "wrap around" Jones, with a little help from Derek and Ca- sey. Well done, team. What a way to start the New Year! CLASSIFIED The Port Perry Precision Con- struction Midgets came out on the short end of a pair of league games this week, then pulled out a tie in an exhibition game. Sunday night a shortened line- up hung in for a while before falling 8-4 to the Jets in Belle- ville. With Jason Phillips and Chad Kearns sitting our sus- pensions, Islanders Kenton Le- Fort and Jeff Jamieson helped bolster the roster. After a Jet goal, Jeremy Nor- ton tied the game at 1-1 from Jeremy Geer. The Jets regained the lead, then added to it in the second period. Daryl Bourgeois ccnnected from Ian Shrigley to close to 3-2; but the home team pulled away with two more in the second and three straight in the third. Jay King, from Nor- ton; and Scott Heasman, unas- sisted; counted in the final four minutes to pull the Eagles a lit- tle closer, butit wasn't enough. Monday night, the Eagles hosted the Stouffville Clippers and turned in a strong effort. Unfortunately, that still didn't do the trick, as specialty teams played a huge role in a 4-1 win for the Clippers. Kearns re- turned to the lineup and opened the scoring for Port early in the first, assisted by Norton and King. Stouffville went on the power play late in the period and took only 18 seconds to knot the score. In the second, the Clippers penalty killers took over; con- verting a double minor penalty into two short handed breaka- way goals. That was all the of- 1 4 fense until late in the game, when coach Christie lifted James Paterson for a sixth skat- er. Eagles generated some ex- cellent pressure in the final 2:30, but the visitors clicked for an empty netter with 10 sec- onds left. Country Style Bantams Tom Chambers and Jason Logan, as well as Islander Jamieson came up with solid performances on short notice. Saturday night the Eagles came up with a strong come- back to earn a 5-5 tie in Picker- ing. Joe Broadwortn opened the scoring in the first minute, fool- ing the goalie with his point shot to the far corner. After Pickering had taken a 2-1 lead, Kearns tied it up on Pineridge Atoms gages Jose two, tie one lose a squeaker the power play. Kearns took Ian McCready's pass in his own end and made the rush, firing a bul- let from the circle. Pickering took a 4-2 lead, then Sean Ellis cut the margin on another Port advantage, blasting a hard slapshot from the top of the circle. Shrigley was in on the setup. The home team regained the two goal edge early in the third, but Port kept coming. At 8:55 Kearns counted his second, when Chambers and Bourgeois combined their checking efforts to feed him at the goalmouth. Then, on their third power play, Port notched a third goal. Kearns worked the puck free in the corner and fed the front of the net, where Chambers made no mistake, burying the tying goal. Swamp streak snapped The Swamp Auto Body of the Port Perry Bantam House League travelled to Uxbridge on Saturday, Jan. 8 to take on the Uxbridge Sports team. The game was a late one (be- ing a 10 p.m. start), the weather was extremely cold and so were the Swampers. Uxbridge built up a 2-0 lead in the first period then extended it to 4-0 after two periods. It took the Swampers till the third to warm up to things and start to carry the play a bit and final- ly broke through Uxbridge's ar- mor to make it a 4-1 game. Picking up the Swampers only goal was Jeremy Gibson as he literally took the puck, goalie and himself all into the net for the score. The 4-1 loss to Uxbridge broke the Swampers eight game winning streak but didn't break their spirits as after the game they were already talking about starting a new streak. A measure of a team's greatness can often be measured by their - attitude and these Swampers definitely have a great attitude. The Swampers next game is on Saturday, Jan. 15 iny East Gwillimbury with a 7:15 p.m. start.
