N The rivalry resurfaced in Port Perry Sunday as the ModJacks, entering the night three points behind Uxbridge in the race for second place in the Central Di- vision, downed the Bruins 2-1 in a hard-hitting, defensive bat- tle. Rick Hutchinson Despite trailing Uxbridge in the league standings, the Mo- Jacks hold the better record in head-to-head meetings, losing only one out of five against the Bruins this year, prior to Sun- day night. Port Perry opened the scor- ing at 11:15 of the second period after a scoreless first frame. Ga- vin Cochrane's shot from the Islanders This past weekend the Cana- dian Tire Midget II Islanders . travelled to Port Dover for a tournament. The first game was at 11 a.m. Saturday against Delhi. The Is- landers started off with a gust of energy with Matt Hobbs opening up the scoring within the first minute of play with the first unassisted goal. Shortly thereafter Andrew Jones sent a shot from the point assisted by Ken Taylor to make the score 2- 0. The officiating of this game left a little to be desired as Matt Hobbs was expelled from the tournament shortly into the first period after a tap from be- hind to a Delhi player. Delhi came back and scored their first goal of the game with 4:18 left and then again with five seconds left in the first peri- od, ending it tied 2-2. The second period's pace was quite different from the first pe-- riod as neither team could get it between the pipes. In the third period the Island- ers went ahead halfway through with a great shot by Gord Bentley from the point, de- flecting off Kent Taylor's shin pads, assisted by Brett Lawson. Shortly after John Hall sent one in assisted again by Brett Law- son to make the score 4-2. Delhi pulled their goalie with 1-1/2 minutes left in the game and Jeff Vernon assisted by De- vin Blair found the open net to end the game 5-2 for the Island- ers. Scott Prechitko played well between the pipes and John Babcock was backup goalie. The second game was played at 9 p.m. against Langton. Having dodged a bullet, the Modacks capitalized on their next opportunity as Jason Co- chrane scored the eventual game-winner on the power play at 18:40 of the second period. Defenceman Duane Em- pringham's shot from the point sailed wide but the bounce off the end boards came right to Cochrane who fired it home be- fore Reid could react. The lone Uxbridge marker came just 31 seconds after Co- chrane's goal on another fortui- tous bounce off the boards at Scugog Arena. Bruin Andre Marois dumped the puck into the Port Perry zone. The puck came off the boards, hit the back of MoJack netminder Rick game and the officiating was much improved from the first game. The Langton players seemed to be that much more aggres- sive than the Islanders as it showed in the final score which was 3-0 for Langton. Scott again played well in the net as he had many more shots on net than their goalie. Brad Strickert played . a strong game and during the third period got caught with a Hutchinson's leg and squeaked behind him to spoil what would have been Hutchinson's first shutout of the season and the ModJack's third. The Bruins pulled Reid in the dying minutes of the final peri- od but were foiled by Hutchin- son who looked brilliant, stop- ping 29 Uxbridge shots on the night. The win moves Port Perry to within a point of Uxbridge and two points closer to the first place Bowmanville Eagles. The Modacks will be in Bob- caygeon to take on the Bullets this Friday night for the first half of a home-and-home series that concludes this Sunday at Scugog Arena at 8 p.m. ModJdacks Facts: Shannon Todd is back with the ModJacks after having left the team for al- most a month. Todd failed to ex- plain his departure at the time but has since met with the Port Perry coaching staff and re- sumed play with the team in a 3-2 win in Lakefield last Fri- day..The latest word on net- minder Shawn Larocque, cur- rently recovering from injuries suffered in a recent car acci- dent, is that the team hopes to have him back in the lineup in time for playoffs which begin in three weeks.
