"A Family Tradition for 127 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, January 11, 1994 - 37 Pineridge Tweens settle for silver . This past weekend the I'weens played four exciting games in Port Perry's Ringette Tourney. Game one on Thurs- day was a hard fought game against Oshawa. Oshawa opened the scoring fairly early in the first period. Port scored a minute later when Mary Jus- tynski made a pretty pass to Jenny Donnelly who fired it past Oshawa's goalie. Oshawa scored two quick goals in the second period be- fore Port found the net on a goal by Leanne Holt, assisted by Ca- thy Cooper. Oshawa netted an- other to make the score 4-2. Port's next goal was a great effort by Jen Donnelly unassist- Tuesday Afternoon Ladies Jan. 4 Team Standings: Flintstone 33, Little Lulu 23, Olive Oyl 19, Petunia 18, Daisy Mae 17, Blondie 16. 200 Flat: Kacey Harper 275, Joan Fleming 243. 600 Triple Flat: Kacey Harper 659. Port maintained quick shifts and lots of intensity with only the two lines. The passing and puck control was a delight to watch. Port's final game in the divi- sion was against Aurora. Port picked up right where they left off in the last game. Unfortu- nately, Aurora won the first pe- riod 1-0. This, along with Bow- manville beating Barrie squashed Port's attempt at con- tinuing in the tournament. Just the same, Port had something to prove as there will be a chance that we could be up against Aurorain the playoffs. Although dominating in the game, Port finally got on the scoreboard late in the second. Within two minutes Port pulled ahead 2-1. Jeff Card got the first, unassisted and Sean McE- naney scored the second one with Ridgway getting the as- sist. The start of the third saw John Ennis and Brad MacAr- thur each score, with assists go- ing to Heasman, Card, MacAr- thur, and Ennis. Before the end of the game, Aurora scored once more but Port still won the period, and the game; 4-2. However, al- though Bowmanville advanced to the finals, numerous specta- tors commented on the disap- pointment that Port was not go- ing on. It was definitely not the same team playing on Friday which dominated on Saturday and Sunday. Overall, the tournament was high class and the Key-Bar Ju- vies represented Port Perry very well. The only drawback from the event was the use of the points-per-period system and the less-than-adequate re- fereeing (at times). The whole team had a great weekend and hope to return next year to go af- ter the prized silver stick. Port gave it all they had in the last five minutes and almost pulled it off. Goals by Mary Justynski assisted by Me- lissa Hooker and Jen Imrie as- sisted by Lisa LeFort ended the game 6-5. Pp On Saturday game two was played against Kingston. Port appeared to have this game well in hand as they jumped into a 3- 0 lead. Leanne Holt opened the scoring unassisted. Jen Imrie scored a minute later assisted by Emilie Leveille. Leanne scored midway through the first assisted by Jennifer Imrie. Kingston finally put one on the board. Port's last geal of the first period was scored by Leanne unassisted. Kingston scored one more to end the first 4-2. Kingston came out flying in the second scoring two fast goals. Our goalie, Jennifer Hammond, held us in the game until Melissa Hooker scored the winning goal assisted by Jen Imrie with the final score 5-4. Sunday's game three against a tough Ajax squad was a must win. What a game this turned out to be. The play raged both ways until Port finally opened the scoring when Emilie Le- veille shot the ring off an Ajax player. Assist for this goal going to Leanne Holt. Ajax came right back to score ending the first 1-1. Ajax found the net early in the second. Port tied the game when Leanne scored assisted by Melissa. With four minutes remaining Port took the lead when Melissa scored assisted by Leanne. Ajax's relentless attack paid off as they scored at the three min- ute mark to tie the game once more. Our netminder, Jen Ham- mond was taken out of the game at this point for an extra attack- er. Port pulled out all the stops firing shot after shot at the Ajax net. With 30 seconds left on the clock Leanne scored unassisted to put Port ahead. Jen Donnelly scored an empty net goal assist- ed by Jen Imrie to end the game 5-3 and put Port into the cham- pionship game against Oshawa. Port lost this game 4-2, how- ever, our girls never gave up trying right to the final bell. Mary scored unassisted to put Port on the board. Oshawa then scored three quick goals togo up 3-1. The Tweens got one back when Melissa scored assisted by Jen Donnelly to end the first period 3-2. Oshawa scored the only goal of the second to end the game 4- 2. Although Diana Burnett, Gi- selle Codd, Jackie Smith and Amy Wilson did not figure in the scoring they deserve special mention as they played their hearts out. Congratulations to the players and coaches for a wonderful weekend of ringette. The Pineridge Sports Tween C ringette squad lost 4-2 in the final of the Country Style \ Ponuts 4th annual tournament held at Scugog Arena on the weekend.
