After a slight dip in 1992, building permit figures re- bounded to normal levels last year. Figures showed a value of $15.3 million, up from the $9.6 million for 1992. The number of permits dropped last year, how- ever, as 238 were issued com- pared to 246 in 1992. Leading the way was residen- tial units constructed. Fifty- three permits were issued for single family dwellings, com- pared to 41 the previous year. The value increased as well to $6.1 million, a significant in- crease over the previous year's figure of $5.4 million. And many believe this trend will continue this year as well. "I suspect single family homes will be up again this year," said Scugog Mayor Ho- ward Hall. The mayor noted a number of projects which could see start- up later this year. Last June, Scugog council allocated 470 sewage units for residential de- velopments in the Port Perry and Prince Albert areas. With this increased activity the mayor sees a number of spin-offs which could benefit the community. He said more goods and services will be pur- chased locally spurring on the eccnomy. One needs only to look to 1993's figures to be encouraged as permit values topped the pre- vious year by $5.7 million. A $5.2-million expansion at Community Memorial Hospital played a large part in boosting the figures, which would have been higher even without the addition. Development in the commer- cial sector also proved to be an encouraging sign. December was not a good month to close the year judging by the building permit report. Nine permits were issued at a yalue of $295,170, down consid- erably from the value for the same month in 1992 of $765,000.
