"A Family Tradition for 127 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, January 11,1994 - 7 Letters to the editor What tax will come next? From Page 6 ber exports to the U.S.A. we would bein dire straights. As large corporations lay off workers and downsize, small business accounts for about 85 percent of all new jobs. Now business is flooded with more red tape and obstruction. The Ontario government is the only province in Canada to leg- islate hiring practices, based on racial minorities, women, abo- riginals and the disabled. More than 17,000 companies -- and 75 per cent of all Ontario work- ers are covered by the discrimi- natory job equity law. It covers all public organizations and most businesses. Why not hire on merit regardless of race or gender? The Rae government socialist policies are crippling business and individuals alike. So called non-profit housing is said to be about to cost us $7.1 billion for some 20,000 units -- much high- er than the private sector costs. Vacancy rates run from 2 per cent in Metro to over 10 per cent in other cities. Worse it costs you and me a whopping $1 bil- lion a year or more than $1,000 a month to subsidize each of these units. A builder told me that in Oshawa units are cost- ing from $100,000 to $150,000 each -- far above what they could be built for by the private sector. Every time we turn around we face more tax increases, by the Rae government to pay for its follies. The list goes on and on, and now includes a new fil- ing fee for complaints to assess- ment review board on your property assessment for taxa- tion. A $20 fee for residential and $70 for a commercial prop- erty. The latest cash cow is the photo radar cameras that cost $80,000 each. Despite OPP crash data figures showing that crashes involving non-speeders numbered 65,696 or almost 97 per cent of the total did not in- volvé speeders. (Source Toronto Star). The cost of adding French signs on Highway 401 some $4 million. What's next, a bath- room tax? Sincerely, Dean J. Kelly, Port Perry, Ont. Grinch paid a visit To the Editor: } The "Grinch" also visited us, as he/she did our good neigh- bors. The "thief" shopped more at our home on the same night as the Timms. The person(s) stole one red spot light, a wooden reindeer built by my husband, filled with silk red and white poinsettias (located in the front porch, right at the front door, nervy, aren't they?), and a large handmade wind chime. If someone is "enjoying" these so-called "gifts", did you notice the antler of the reindeer is chipped, and when the wind is making your newly-acquired is unknown. the option-packed car. tickets to the Grand Ole Opry. sd nina ek Pictured above is Miss Hallie Emmerson. As well as enjoying cake with her colleagues, M¥. Hutchinson was presented with an all-expense paid four-day trip to Nashville with Brad Forder, formerly of Port Perry, displayed 30 of his photographs in an exhibit at the Scugog Memorial Public Library. A letter to the editor from Peggy Bredin thanked Prince Albert crossing guard Irene Harrison for making Christmas so much fun for the children. On the last day of school before the Christmas holiday, Mrs. Harrison dressed up as Santa Claus chimes chime, just think of this, my children's great grandfather made it for them. So not only did you violate us, but you also stole memories that two little items held for us. What a way to start the New Year off, as a thief!!?? Hopefully, your con- science will grow as you ma- ture. The Bowers Victorian Village Serious break-in problem To the Editor: At approximately 3:20 a.m. on the morning of Friday, Jan. 7, the store on 'Scugog Island known as Aldred's Corner, was broken into and robbed of a quantity of tobacco products. My dog awakened me to the fact that something was amiss at this time. In attempting to . phone 911, I was thwarted by the fact that one of the exten- sion phones had been taken off the cradle, and I was unable to use my portable phone. Without going into a lot of detail, I was able to dress and get to the of- fice, replace the phone and call 911. The robbery was still in progress. The policemen cau- tioned me to be careful, however they fled when they heard me approach. The time was 5:26 a.m. The loss, at cost, was about $2,000 plus extensive damage to the door. I have since learned of five or six other local robberies in the past few weeks, none of which to my knowledge, have been re- ported in our local press. Non-reporting can lead the populace to a false sense of se- curity. Over the weekend, part of the loot was recovered on Scugog Is- land where it had apparently been hidden. It was discovered by a dog on a walk with its mis- tress. . We have substantial leads as to the perpetrators. In the meantime, if this case 1s not solved shortly, itis my in- tention to offer a substantial re- ward for arrest and conviction of the several people involved, through Crime Stoppers. In closing, perhaps there could be closer co-operation be- tween the press and our police, so that the general population can be made more "aware of what appears to be a growing and very serious break-in prob- lem. { Respectfully, Joel W.
