"Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Heart and Stroke volunteers will be canvassing this month About 175 Scugog residents will volunteer their time to a hearty cause next month. February is Heart and Stroke Foundation month and can- vassers will be going door-to- door to raise money for the local chapter. Organizers hope to raise $17,000 during this year's can- vass -- abouf $500 more than last year's total. "It may not be easy to do be- cause of the economy, but that's what we hope to accomplish," said Gwen Taylor who co-chairs the local campaign with Doro- thy Bourgeois, Judy Smith and Joyce Storry. Helping the four co-chairmen will be 21 area captains and 150 canvassers. Areas that will be covered in the door-to-door cam- paign include Port Perry, Greenbank, Prince Albert, Manchester, Seagrave, Robin- glade Estates, Castle Harbour, Scugog Island, and the Ridges. No canvassing will be done in Blackstock, Epsom, or Utica as money for the Heart and Stroke Foundation is raised through the Jump Rope For Heart skip- a-thons at area schools. Funds for the foundation will also be raised through two other ventures. Roses For Heart coin boxes will be placed in local stores and three merchants will be selling heart smart cook- books. Heart Smart Cooking on a Shoestring ($7.95), The Light- Hearted Cookbook ($16.95), and Light-Hearted Iveryday Cooking ($19.95) are available at Big V Drugstore, From My Heart, and the Port Perry Star. The Ontario foundation re- ports that heart disease and stroke accounted for more than 76,500 deaths ip. Canada in 1991. The good news is the rate which Canadians die from heart disease and stroke has been cut in halfover the past 40 years. In 1991, an estimated 32,496 lives were saved due to medical advancements made possible through money raised through the foundation for research pro- jects.
