38 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, January 25, 1994 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Legionnaires win tourney Stiles On Friday, Jan. 14, the le- gionaires travelled to Lindsay for the first game of the Lindsay "A" Tournament. Our oppo- nents were the Peterborough Nationals which we hoped to beat again. Peterborough, how- ever, had other ideas. Port started out very slowly, had trouble getting it out of their end and in less than a minute Peterborough scored. Our play picked up later in the period and we spent a lot of time in the Peterborough end but Port just couldn't get a goal. Early in the second, Port took a penalty and it didn't take the Nationals long to make it 2-0. Again the Legionaires strug- gled in their own end and Peter- borough pulled ahead 3-0. Fi- nally at the halfway mark, Troy Campbell found the mark, un- assisted. This ended the scoring for the second but it appeared Port was picking up the pace a bit. Early in the third, Seth Gray had a good scoring opportunity but didn't find the mark. Shane Savage kept us in with a good glove save. Our next goal came from Jon Froats, assisted by Adam Hobbs and Danny Lyons. Peterborough scored their fourth with just over a minute to go and, try as we might, we were unable to keep our win streak over Peterborough alive and the score ended 4-2 in favor of Peterborough. Jeff Ashton was chosen MVP for this game. Congratulations, Jeff. Our second game was played against the Riverside Rangers from Windsor. This game was different. We.opened the scor- ing early with Seth scoring from a goal mouth scramble, assisted by Jon and Derek Tindall. A few minutes later, immovable Jon ip, front of the net made the score 2-0, with the assist going to Danny. With three minutes left in the second, Scott Jeffrey tipped one in from Danny and Adam H. The game now seemed to get more physical, it's hard to be- lieve this'is the same team that played Peterborough. Three minutes into the third, Dann Lee kept Riverside off the board with three quick saves. With only 35 seconds left in the game, Riverside scored robbing Dann of a well-deserved shut- out. Final Score 3-1 for Port. Game three was against An- Tweens coast to victory The Pineridge Tweens trav- elled to Ennismore Sunday for the first meeting this year for these teams. Port won this game 11-1. Port was really up for this game and it showed from the very first whistle. The girls were relentless In attacking the Ennismore goal- ie, scoring five times in the first and six in the second. Jenn Hammond turned in another solid effort between the pipes. The scoring summary: leanne three goals, one assist; Cathy two goals; Jenn ©. two goals, one assist; Melissa two goals; Jenn D. one goal; Dianna one goal; Mary three assists [isa two assists; Amy one as: sist: Amelie one assist: Jackie one assist. caster. We are still missing lan Parliament who is suffering from a bad cold. This game started like the first game and Shane came up with a couple of good saves to keep the score at zeroes. With two minutes left in the period, Scott gave us the wake-up call, scoring from Glenn McCready. You'd have thought we had won the Stan- ley Cup. Just 30 seconds into the second period, Scott did it again, this time assisted by the two Adams. Twenty-six seconds later, Adam H. picks up a pass from Casey Van Schagen and makes the score 3-0 for the Le- gionaires. Shane did a great job stopping an Ancaster break- away but, halfway through the period, they finally found the mark to make the score 3-1. With 1:08 left in the second, Scott got his hat trick unassist- ed. Wow!! The third period brought more great saves by our goalie and his defence and Ancaster was kept off the scoreboard for six minutes before they got their last goal. With only four seconds left, Adam Jones scored on the empty net. The fi- nal score was 5-2 and Port was assured a spot in the consola- tion round. Our fourth game was against Owen Sound for the Consola- tion Championship. This game was exciting, with great end-to- end hockey, lots of chances and great saves by each goalie. With 5:04 left in the second, Wyatt Park passed to Jeff who blis- tered one at the net where Jon tipped it in from his favorite parking spot. Two minutes lat- er, Owen Sound tied it up. Jon On Sunday, Jan. 23 the Scu- gog Overhead Doors Pee Wee B hockey club travelled to Ux- bridge to take on the Bruins in their own backyard. Port must love playing on Sundays be- cause they started the first peri- od working hard and playing good hockey and never let tip. Nick Pelyk hit Brad Johnston at the Uxbridge blue line and he was in all alone on the Uxbridge goaltender and he made no mis- take to give Port Perry a 1-0 lead. Travis Pickard set up Blayne Kinnunen in front but the big Uxbridge goalie made the save. Ryan McQuade made a huge hit on an Uxbridge forward to keep Port Perry's momentum going at 10:13. Blayne Kinnunen, Alex Wordley and Travis Pick- ard got a nice tic-tac-toe passing play going deep in the Uxbridge end of the rink but couldn't tuck itunder the sliding goaltender. Both goalies were playing well with Port Perry having the edge in play. Brad Johnston, Deryk Campbell and Nick Pe- lyk came flying into the Ux- bridge zone but they got shut down when the defenceman took the play into the Uxbridge corner and paid big time when he got creamed by Brad John- ston (beast). At 7:26 Blayne Kinnunen and Brad Johnston were working the corners hand- ing out some big body checks and Deryk Campbell made his presence felt along the boards. Uxbridge split the Port defence but Ryan McQuade made a big poke check to nuhify the rush. Scott Sanderson came nto the Uxbndge zone alone and when he wasn't taken seriously made a good second effort and almost jammed at by the played goalie a few minutes lat- er and kept Owen Sound from going ahead. With just over a minute left, Adam J. tipped a shot by Scott and Port moved ahead again. In the third, Owen Sound tied it up again and the score re- mained 2-2 until the last min- ute when Jon found the mark with help from the two Adams to give Port the lead, the Conso- lation Championship and a shot at the "AA" Consolation winner, Vaughan. The start of game five was really official. Each boy was in- troduced over the loudspeaker and they stood on the blue line for our National Anthem. The game started with end-to-end action and great saves by both goalies. Derek opened the scor- ing on a nice pass from Seth and Jon at 5:45 of the first. There was more of the same in the second with Scott getting a tip by Troy on a hard slap shot from the blue line by Wyatt, 2-0 for Port. Shane and his defence really went to work in the third, denying Vaughan at every turn and at the 8:40 mark, Port scored again, this time Adam H. got the marker from Seth and Adam J. The final score was 3-0 for the Legionaires and the Grand Consolation Cham- pions were able to skate around the rink with the trophy. Well done, boys!! Note for the trivia buffs: While examining the trophy af- ter the game, it was noted that Port Perry had won once be- fore...in 1954, with none other than Garry Geer, our coach, playing forward (left wing, he thinks). shocked goalie. David Gainey was setting play after play up trying to give his team a sizeable lead. At 1:58 Uxbridge tied the game when they scored on a scramble in front of the net. The Uxbridge fans had hard- ly finished cheering when Blayne Kinnunen took control deep in the Uxbridge zone, over to Alex Wordley in the slot, to the side of the net to Travis Pickard who shot it high to the corner of the Uxbridge net to re- gain the lead 2-1 at 0:39. Just six seconds later Brad Johnston took the faceoff to the left of the Uxbridge goaltender and scored from the faceoff to give Port a 3- 1 lead after the first period of play. Uxbridge opened the second period in a hurry when they came into the Port Perry zone with a two on one and Chris Jones made a good poke check to turn Uxbridge away empty handed at 13:55. Alex Wordley got. it all together and put a huge hit on one of the biggest Uxbridge players on the ice. Brad Johnston should feel sick every game because he was forechecking, backchecking and handing out some hefty hits on every shift out there. He was really flying. Blayne Kinnunen was playing the same as John- ston, handing out some punish- ing body checks and playing good two way hockey. At 13:14 Alex Wordley took control of the puck in the Uxbridge zone, over to Justin (Cat) Sheehey who shppeditinto the open corner to mve Port ad4-1lead. As Justin Sheehey was tak- img a beating in the Uxbndge corner his buddy David Gainey let a wicked boomer go from the Tuesday Afternoon Ladies : Jan. 11 Team Standings: Wilma Flintstone 35, Little Lulu 30, Olive Oyl 22, Daisy Mae 21, Blondie 21, Petunia 18. 200 Flat: Kathy Hoar 210, Ona Tremble 208, Kacey Harp- er 205, 206, Sandy McIntosh 200. Wednesday Night Ladies Jan.12,1994 Team Standings: Balsam Ladies 63, Mary St. Mommas left boards that almost found - the top corner. Nick Pelyk let a good shot go that hurt the Ux- bridge goaltender. The line of Johnston, Camp- bell and Pelyk were flying out there and playing good heads up hockey. With the second period wind- ing down there was a big pile up in the Port Perry goal crease but the defence was Johnie on the spot to keep Uxbridge away from their goaltender. Uxbridge scored at 12:26 to close the gap to4-2. At 11:09 Deryk Campbell set up Brad Johnston to the right of the Uxbridge net and fired a hard low shot to the cor- ner for a 5-2 lead and Brad com- pleted his hat trick. The play was starting to get a little chippy but Port had con- trol. There wasn't any more scoring in the period. Brad Johnston opened the third period when the beast took his man into the boards and took control of the puck but the rush was nulified. With Port sporting the 5-2 lead Uxbridge had to open up and this caused Port to have some good scoring chances. The McQuades, Johnstons, Kinnunens, Pelyks, etc., etc. were allowed to free wheel and make some nice plays up. Chris Jones handed out a good body check along the boards at 13:42. Brad Johnston and Nick Pelyk did a nice passing play at 11:14 and only a good save by the Ux- bndge goaltender kept these two off the scoreboard. Dave Gainey was setting up the plays well in the third peri- od keeping Uxbridge on their toes. At 10:57 Brad Johnston fed a mice passin the slot to Nick Pelvk and he fired it high to the 58, High St. Honeys 48, Simcoe Sweethearts 48, Island Rd. 43, Sexton St. 34 Over 200 - Carol Hammond 225, Kathleen Watts 209, Julia Dempsey 204, Wendy Johnston 232, Margot Brain 215, Anne Aldridge 218 Over 500 - Margot Brain 586, Marg Johansen 555 Jan.19, 1994 Over 200 - Julia Dempsey 217, Jody -Smith 204, Eileen Gerber 213, Wendy Nolan 204, Barb Condie 202, Marg Johan- sen 223 Over 550 - Marg Johansen 593 Bridge Jan. 19 - Afternoon 5 Table Mitchell - Avg. 50 North/South First - Doris Phinney and Judy Atkinson 60-1/2. At 5:06 Blayne Kinnunen had the puck deep in Uxbridge country, put it back to the point to Alex Wor- dley as he made a nice shet to beat the goaltender low on the short side for a 7-2 lead. At this point Uxbridge was loosing it and taking runs at any Port Perry player out there without any regard for that lit- tle black chunk of rubber lying on the ice and at 4:27 Alex Wor- dley side stepped a body check, put a nice pass to the Uxbridge blue line to Ryan McQuade, to Blayne Kinnunen and Travis Pickard slammed it to the back of the Uxbridge net to take a commanding 8-2 lead. Eleven seconds later the Port Perry captain David Gainey put a nice pass on Justin Sheehey's stick as he cruisad into the slot in front of the Uxbridge net, over to Scottie Sanderson at the side and he scores, yes!! Scott made a night deposit to put it away for Port giving them a 9-2 victory on the road and taking a 2-0 lead in this three out of five series. Game three is on Tuesday night at Scugog Arena at 9 p.m. Come on out and take in a Scu- gog Overhead Doors game. Playing in goal for Port Perry was Michael MacLennan. Hope to see you back in the lineup on Tuesday Jef. Honorable mention for good hustle goes to Brad Johnston, Blayne Kinnunen and Scott Harper and Ryan McQuade gets the nod for good defensive effort. Good forechecking goes to Nick Pelyk, Blaype Kinnunen and Brad .Johnston.
