"A Family Tradition for 127 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, Jahuary 25,1994 - 3 a ir oc as er TTY " READ SS . Adds 32 cents to phone bill Region implements subscriber billing for 9-1-1 By Scott Anderson Port Perry Star Durham Regional Council has taken another step towards the implementation of a prov- ince-wide emergency response program. Last week, council voted to implement subscriber billing for 9-1-1. This would come into effect following approval from the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Com- mission (CRTC). There is both good news and bad news in this proposal. The good news is that Dur- ham residents will no longer be taxed for the service on their re- gional assessments. The bad news is that the resi- dents will now be charged an ad- ditional 32 cents on their monthly Bell Canada bills. Despite this, Inspector Derek Denson, Durham Police's 9-1-1 manager, sald there are a num- ber of benefits. , Durham Region would realize a savings of approximately $400,000 annually as it would no longer be required to pay for the dedicated and interagency trunks. It will also receive a one-time rebate of $300,000 from Bell Canada for some of the compo- nents. But Inspector Denson said the greatest benefit is that Dur- ham will become part of the Public Emergency Reporting System (PERS), available to all municipalities in Quebec and Ontario. He said 95 per cent of Ontario should be on the 9-1-1 system within five years. Durham Chairman Gary Her- rema was not impressed with Two housing projects From page 1 The homes will be 2,000 to 4,000-square foot, custom-built homes. Despite - appearing before council with good news, the good news was not recipricated as council rejected a request to allow overhead wires in the sub- division. Scugog specifies that all services must be under- ground. Mr. Rondeau was hoping to keep costs down on the develop- ment by using overhead lines. A difference of approximately $80,000 exists between over- head and buried utilities. But in a 3-2 vote, council re- jected the request arguing a dangerous precedent would be set by allowing a developer to di- gress from the township's subdi- vision agreement. Rash of snowmobile thefts A rash of snowmobile thefts were reported to police at 26 Di- vision on Tuesday, Jan. 18. An Aldred Drive resident re- ported his 1990 Yamaha stolen from his front lawn at 5:50 a.m. At 8 p.m., a Mikelen Court resident reported that two Pola- WHOLESALE PRICES ON BRAND NAME FACTORY SECONDS ris snow machines were taken from the side of his home. "l just think 32 cents 1s too high," he said. Under the old system, Dur- ham was paying $480,000 per year. This cost has now jumped to $600,000. He noted that Durham Re- gion was funding the cost of the system for other municipalities. Chairman Herrema said the region has hired alawyer to look into the cost, arguing that the fee should be 24 cents, and not the 32 cents proposed by Bell Canada. i TO a ee KELLY LOWN/PORT PERRY STAR Firefighters from Hall #1 and Hall #2 of the Scugog Fire Department responded to a barn fire in the early afternoon on Friday, Jan. 21.
