But you can at least choose No surprises in throne speech By Scott Anderson Port Perry Star The Liberal government de- livered what was expected 1n last week's throne speech, Dur- ham's MP says. "There were no real surpris- es," sald Durham Riding MP Alex Shepherd. "The govern- ment continued on with its elec- toral mandate." Mr. Shepherd said the gov- ernment outlined what it had promised during the election, repeating what is contained in its "now infamous red book." The Throne Speech, read by Governor General Ray Hnaty- shyn, promised a reintroduction of a home renovation assistance program, a Youth Service Corps to put young Canadians back to work, measures to help small business raise capital and help for exporters, better job and lit- eracy training, programs to combat racism, hate crimes and violence against women and children, an ethics counsellor to advise ministers and govern- ment officials, and the elimina- tion of double-dipping. Mr. Shepherd was particular- ly impressed that the Liberal government was planning to target the business community as a priority. "I was happy that he (Prime Minister Chretien) reaffirmed his commitment to small and medium-sized businesses," he said. Although it was the first time, it won't be the last. Mr. Shep- herd is now seeking to geton the speaker's lis' concerning the pre-budget debate, as well. Bowl for Millions fundraiser will be held February 13-19 The Big Brothers/Big Sisters Association of North Durham will be hosting its Bowl For Mil- lions fundraiser February 13- 19. League bowlers are welcome to participate in the event by collecting sponsors and then bowling on their regular league night. A celebrity day will be held at Centennial Lanes on Saturday, Feb. 19 from 2-8 p.m. Business- es, service clubs, schools, and professional groups are encour- aged to enter teams. The associ- ation hopes to raise at least $200 a team. Pledge sheets can be obtained by calling the Big Brothers/Big Sisters office at 985-3733. Prizes for collecting the most in pledges include a $1,000 trav- el voucher from Suzy's Travel, a $600 shopping spree at Hen- shall's, and a swivel rocker and ottoman from Homestead Fur- niture. A weekend for two at the Cambridge Suites in Toronto, donated by Suzy's Travel, will also be given away. Bowlers will have their name entered in the draw for every $10 in sponsor- ship they raise.
