The event was the annual Pine Ridge Dis- trict Ice Fishing Derby orga- nized by the 1st Seagrave group. Twenty-four groups from seven districts were in atten- dance. While the fish would not co- operate in numbers, they did so in size, with Coady Melvin of 3rd Lindsay taking the trophy for the largest fish with an 18 inch walleye. In the other individual cate- gory, Paul Anger of 1st Cart- wright won the cup for the best designed ice-fishing tip-up in the stiffest competition to date. The Pack and Troop competi- tions were designed around badge requirements to allow the youth to earn while they had fun. The winner of each sec- tion repeated their previous year's success with 6th Lindsay awarded the Pack trophy and 1st Cartwright as best all- around troop. The organizers wish to thank the Port Perry IGA and J D Fishing and Archery for their assistance in making this event a success. Pineridge Tween's first meet- ing of the season with Mariposa ended with Port taking a hard fought 5-4 win. Our girls roared to a four goal first period lead and looked like they would cruise to an easy victory. Leanne opened the scoring on a nice solo effort. Two minutes later Lisa laid a beauty pass to Leanne who scored. Diana put Port up by three on a great rush to the Mariposa net. Leanne rounded out the first period scoring after she took a neat pass from Mary. Mariposa came out in the sec- ond to play ringette, and did they ever!! Before Port knew it the opposition scored four times to tie the game. With two min- utes remaining in the game Port took a penalty. Jen Ham- mond, our goalie, kept us in the game until Cathy started a great rush by passing to Lisa who passed to Leanne who put the ring past the Mariposa net- minder, Unfortunately Port received a penalty with 33 seconds left on the clock. Down now by two players our girls fought tena- ciously to preserve the win. The Tween's next match pit- ted them against a chippy, hard hitting Pickering squad. All our girls rose to the occasion, refus- ing to be intimidated. Forwards Mary, Jen D., Lisa, Leanne, Jackie and Amy skated miles. Pressing the Pickering de- fense and backchecking their forwards. Cathy, Jen I., Melissa and Diana played very strong defense, always pestering the Pickering forwards. And what to say about our goalie Jen Hammond. She was terrific, stupendous, just simply fantas- tic. Both teams fought tooth and nail for a period and a half be- fore Leanne scored the only goal of the game after receiving an awesome pass from Mary. The last five minutes saw our girls give everything they had, fighting to the last second, to win the game. Swamp comes from behind to win The Swamp Auto Body hock- ey team of the Port Perry Ban- tam House League travelled to East Gwillimbury on Saturday, January 29 to take on the local Brooklin Concrete team. The Swampers were down by 2-0 and 3-1 scores but this "never say die" squad once again fought hard and gave it their all to come from behind to win by a 4-3 score. The Swampers always seem a little slow at getting involved in the game's early moments and this game was no different as they quickly fell behind by a 2-0 score. As the first period rolled on, the Swampers started to pick up the pace and it paid off as Jeremy Gibson got his team on the board, with Jay Fletcher and Greg Bonser assisting on the play to make it 2-1. The second period opened with the Concrete team regain- ing their two-goal lead on an un- usual goal, (but, hey, they all count once they're in) and it's now a 3-1 game. The rest of the period belonged to the Swam- pers as they exploded for three goals to take a 4-3 lead. (Kris Wootton scored two goals and Aaron levy tallied the go-ahead marker on a nice end-to-end rush, finished off with a wicked wrist shot to the top corner. Picking "up assists on these goals were Jeremy Gibson with two and singles by Jay Fletcher, Big Nick Skerratt, Aaron Levy and Kris Wootton. Once the Swampers took the lead they played sound defence the rest of the game to preserve the 4-3 win. Besides the point getters in this game, some other Swampers that had good games were Kevin Edwards who rang a shot off the post, Alex Bedell who slid out to block a big point shot, Ron Colvin who had one of his best games on defence and Swampers' goalie Doug Short who once again came up with a solid effort, making some key saves. The Swampers continue to play on the road as their next game is in Uxbridge on Feb. 5 with a7 p.m. start.
