/ 30 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, February 1,1994 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Peewee Bs lose to Trenton in Game 2 The Scugog Overhead Doors Peewee B hockey club travelled down the 401 to Trenton to take on the Trenton Golden Hawks in game two of the playoffs. Port Perry came out slowly but Jus- tin Sheehey broke into the Trenton zone on a breakaway but got denied at 7:41. The Port Perry goalie stopped a clear cut breakaway at 7:20. Port Perry scored first at 6:33 when Travis Pickard fed a good pass in front of the Trenton net to Alex Wor- dley and he scores! to give Port Perry the early lead 1-0. David Gainey, Deryk Campbell and Nick Pelyk came flying into the Trenton zone at 5:15 and after a beautiful passing play the boys went away empty-handed. At 5:00 David Gainey, Justin Shee- hey and Scott Sanderson came oh so close to jamming it in the open corner. After Port Perry having four or five good scoring opportunities, Trenton came roaring back and scored to tie the game at 1-1 at 4:57. ~~ Port started the second peri- od kind of flat but was still play- ing good hockey. Jeff Neal handed out a big hig deep in the Port Perry zone at 14:00 mark. Trenton came right back and marched in unmolest- ed from the faceoff circle to find out that the Port Perry goalie was playing well also. At 8:47 Brad Johnston, Deryk Camp- bell and Nick Pelyk came charging into the Trenton zone and when the Trenton goal- tender tried to clear the puck, Deryk Campbell got there first, leaving the goalie eight feet out of the net, to Brad Johnston who scored in the empty net to give Port a 2-1 lead. Trenton scored at 7:46 when Trenton was in all alone to tie the game at 2-2. Trenton scored seconds later at 7:38 when the Port Perry goalie tried to cover up but the Trenton team jammed it in, also injuring the Port Perry goalie. Port came on hard in the second and the work paid off with Adam Jones finding the mark on a rebound from Scott Jeffrey and Adam Hobbs. Auro- ra scored again to take the lead but the Legionaires tied it up on a beautiful passing play with Ian Parliament finding the mark from Troy and Danny Lyons. Aurora opened the scor- ingearly in the third, but 24 sec- onds later Port tied it up agin. This time Seth picked up a re- bound and made no mistake. Assists went to Derek Tindall and Jon. Aurora again took the lead, this time with a power- play goal. With just 34 seconds left Scott tied it for Port tipping a point shot from Seth and Der- ek. The final score was 5-5. On Jan. 28 Port met Oshawa LNHL Red Wings for a makeup game. The Red Wings scored first but the Legionaires an- swered with two, the first by Adam J. from Ian and Adam H and the second by Danny from Casey vanSchagen and Troy. Ir. the second period Port pullec ahead 3-1 on a goal by Adam J and Troy. It appeared that the Legionaries were in the driver's seat until the oppositior notched three unanswerec goals giving them the lead Nearing the end of the third Adam Jones got his hat trick from Jon and Adam H. This end ed the scoring at 4-4 and the Le gionaires had to settle for then second tie in as many games. Hot? Trenton goalie. Deryk Campbell was in all alone at 3:18 but got denied. Brad John- ston, Deryk Campbell and Nick Pelyk were playing well deep in the Trenton end but the puck stayed out despite their efforts. Blayne Kinnunen lined up a Trenton winger on the boards and ouch! Port was starting to get cranked up again at 2:35 when David Gainey and Scott Sanderson just missed after having the Trenton goalie down. Trenton scored again at 2:06 to give Trenton four unan- swered goals in the second peri- od and a 5-2 lead. The Doorsmen started the third period trying hard but the puck wasn't bouncing their way. Ryan McQuade made a good defensive play at centre to break up a Trenton rush at 13:39. David Gainey creamed a winger on the boards and Jeff Neal got decked in the Port Perry zone but Blayne Kinnu- nen took care of that guy with a big hit of his own. Brad John- ston let a hard shot go from the slot that just missed the top cor- ner. Corey Branton was back in net for the third period for Port Perry. Port was coming on little by little in the third period but still the puck stayed out. Deryk Campbell was handing out checks along the boards like the Legend used to do, eh Rick? Da- vid Gainey was in on the Tren- ton goalie all alone and missed high and wide at 9:31. Ryan McQuade took a huge hit in the Trenton zone at 9:00. After all the work around the Trenton goal, Trenton came to the top of the right face-off circle and caught the top corner to go ahead by a 6-2 count. David Gainey and "Justin Sheehey had a good chance at 4:35. Ryan McQuade made an end-to-end rush only to end up in a heap in front of the Trenton goal, due to a good trip. Ryan McQuade was all around the Trenton net in the third period and David Gainey was having his moments also in the third. Port Perry pulled their goal- tender in favor of an extra at- tacker but Trenton scored into the empty net at 0:48 to make the final score 7-2 for Trenton. MoJacks to meet Lakefield Chiefs The Port Perry ModJacks are heading into playoff action this weekend after ending the regu- lar season on a winning note. The ModJacks' 7-5 victory over Lakefield January 27 ended the regular season for the local squad. This Saturday the two teams will meet in the first round of playoffs in the Central Ontario Junior C hockey loop. Last Thursday's game saw the MoJacks come back from a 2-0 deficit after one period to score five unanswered goals in the second period and two in the third. Seven different players ac- counted for the goals as Trevor Bremner, Jason Cochrane, Steve Staniland, Todd Smart, Brad Moase, Clair Cornish and Keith Leslie each potted one. Assists on the night went to Moase and Cornish with two each and singles to Jeremy Ross, Kevin McDonald, Bremn- er.dJ. Cochrane and Leslie. The MoJacks ended the regu- lar season in second place with 38 points, one more than third place Uxbridge. The Bowman- ville Eagles wrapped up first place in the league with 45 points. Cornish captured the league scoring title with 26 goals and 29 assists totalling 55 points. _ Leslie was 10th in overall scor- ing with 16 goals and 16 assists. The ModJacks will meet the Lakefield Chiefs, who finished fourth with 29 points, on Satur- day, Feb. 5 at 8 p.m. at Scugog Arena. Games two and three will shift to Lakefield on Feb. 6 and 8 before returning to Port Perry Wednesday, Feb. 9 for a 7:30 p.m. start. Games five through seven, if necessary, will be in Port Perry on Feb. 11 at 8:30p.m.; Lake- field Feb. 12 at 8 p.m. and in Port Perry for game seven on Feb. 13 foran 8 p.m. start.
