4 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, February 1,1994 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Unlucky shoplifter gets | sentenced to year in jail A 31-year-old Bowmanville woman has been sentenced to spend one year in jail following a shoplifting spree in Port Perry, Whitby and Oshawa prior to Christmas. Durham Police arrested Patricia Mitchell of Orchard Park Blvd. on Dec. 20 following a collision which sent her and two others to hospital. When police checked Ms. Mitchell's vehicle they found it had been stolen and contained merchandise taken from a number of area stores. Further investigation by the police revealed the woman was involved in two other minor accidents earlier in the day. Ms. Mitchell pleaded guilty in provincial court to posses- sion of stolen merchandise, theft under $1,000 and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle. Ten other charges including theft, failing to remain at the scene of an accident and dan- gerous driving were withdrawn. Bogus $50 bill passed A counterfeit bill was passed at a Port Perry grocery store last week. According to Durham Region- al Police, a phony $50 bill was passed at Port Perry IGA on January 26. The bogus bill was not detect- ed until it was brought to the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce later that day.
