a WNT) Ale TAME CMAN Ud, "A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PANE Of wmgsedaX vrebya AY OAT VAOAOTI0 TONG PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, February 8,1994 - 11 nr Pageant a real eye-opener for Scugog's Kelly Menzies It may not have been a suc- cessful adventure, but it was re- warding for Kelly Menzies nonetheless. The 18-year-old Port Perry teen recently competed in the Cities of America Pageant in Or- lando, Florida. She earned a chance to go to the pageant after being named Miss Teen Toronto last year. "It was a real eye-opener," she said, addingit was an extremely competitive affair. In fact, she said it was the competitiveness that turned her off competing in future pa- geants. "It was a good experience, but I didn't like the extreme compe- tition." The contestants were re- quired to compete in three are- as; the interview, sports wear and evening wear. Performing in front of a large audience was a new experience for Miss Menzies, who had a lit- tle difficulty responding to the question. "You don't realize how hard it 1s being on stage," she said. Despite the disappointment of not placing in the top 10 among the 400 contestants, Miss Menzies was pleased with her result. "I feel I did well," she said. "I did the best I could have done." Val Menzies, her mother, agreed. "She did really well. Much iefiar than she thought she id." But the overall experience soured her view on future pa- geants. "I don't think I'd goin another one. It was fun, but I don't like the competition." She may not have taken home any trophies or prizes, but Miss Menzies said she left the pa- geant with something far more valuable -- self-confidence. Kelly Menzies of Port Perry competes in American pageant. During the week, a number of the contestants and parents commented to her on her style, noting that it was "the look" de- sired by modelling agencies at the present time. This, she said, added new en- couragement to her goals. With this in mind, Miss Men- zies has decided to turn her at- tention to modelling, where it may be challenging but not as cutthroat. She will also find an agency to help her further her career, which includes a model- ling competition in Oshawa in March. She also has her sights set on a college education in Fashion Arts. e Renovations URANJO "Building today, your ONTRACTING dreams for tomorrow" e Custom Built Homes === e Additions ==] Port Perry - 905) 985-7287 - John Van Belle ¢ Stretch & Strength Classes ¢ Step Classes ¢ $5.00 per class ¢ Discount Value Passes available for 5, 10, 15, or 20 classes To inquire about class times, registration or for more information) Nc call (905) 985-4003 DELTA FITNESS CENTRE WE'VE ADDED OUR 2ND AEROBIC FITNESS CENTRE AT 76 Water St., Port Perry (beside Square Boy Pizza) oi] \ A Ww AY) £3 = ~( Clr = wy pe La ) \® addition, barn, deck, garage?
