But now, thanks to a local woman, this is about to change. Dorothy Shire, a 4-H leader from Durham West, is spear- heading a project that will see the Ontario 4-H clubs document their respective histories. These reports will be com- piled in a 300-page book with approximately 2,000 copies dis- tributed across the province. "Ontario is probably the biggest and most prosperous area, but it doesn't have a histo- ry," she said last week. Although she has been in- volved in the 4-H clubs for close to 30 years, she did not realize the need for such a compilation until a student came to her for help on a project. Mrs. Shire said there was a good collection of local docu- ments, but they were in the form of many pictures, articles and clippings. Realizing the need to collect this data, she made a presenta- Durh arm Stearn - 985-8552 LOOSE RUGS Nn BROADLOOM Cleaning UPHOLSTERY 3M Scotchguard e SPC training oo Ww ATTENTION ALL TECHNICAL/TRADES PEOPLE! See story. ber of past and present mem- bers, they are digging through the files to document the story. Time is also a factor in this project, as it must be completed by next January to coincide with the 80th anniversary of the 4-H club. One thing Mrs. Shire has a number of its members have gone on to lofty heights. Former members who went through the ranks of the local 4- H club include Durham Re- gion's Chairman Gary Herre- ma, Brock Mayor Don Hadden and former provincial and fed- eral politician Ross Stevenson. The Durham West club, which covers a wide area of the former Ontario County, has been in existence for more than 50 years. Although the records show that the first test was com- pleted in 1947, many believe it saw its origins in the 1930s. Records show that the first school fairs was held in Ontario County and one of the first hol- stein shows was held in Port Perry. The club, stressing the four Hs (head, heart, health and hands) teaches agricultural and homemaking skills to youth aged 12 to 26. The age has since been changed to 10 to 21. The participants complete a number of projects to achieve prizes and compete for scholar- ships. Mrs. Shire, who has been leading since 1966, believes the 4-H program creates a "charac- ter person" and the members benefit from "the friendship, leadership and knowledge." A reunion is being held at the Ontario Agricultural and Food buildingon Vanedward Drive in Port Perry on Thursday, Febru- ary 10at 1:30 p.m. Mrs. Shire hopes the meeting will not only bring back old members but aid in the research ofthe report. learned about the Durham West club is that it has a long and interesting history in which SCOTT ANDERSON / PORT PERRY § | TOYOTA $21.95 OIL, FILTER & LUBE e Change engine oil - up to 4 quarts included * Install new oil filter - filter included e Lubricate chassis where applicable Parts and labour included.
