"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, February 8,1994 - 3 Hall set to seek third term as mayor By Scott Anderson Port Perry Star Citing good health and some unfinished business, Howard Hall will seek a third term of of- fice in the fall election. The mayor made the an- nouncement last week. The deadline to file nomina- tion papers for the November election is in October. But the mayor decided to announce his decision early in the year, fol- lowing a number of enquiries from Scugog residents about his future. "I thought in all fairness to those concerned, especially those that supported me, that I should let them know I am going to run again," he said. The mayor said he felt not only flattered but confident fol- lowing this show of support. "I think it indicates that peo- ple are quite satisfied with the job I've done in the past five years." "I have talked to a number of people on my campaign and AER fall election. See story. Ee they are very excited that I'm running again." As a result, he decided to throw his hat in the ring for an- other term as mayor. Although most would be con- tent with two terms as mayor of a municipality, he said he had many things to accomplish be- fore he is ready to give up poli- tics. Mayor Hall said there were approximately 10 projects in the works at the present time that he would like to see com- pleted in the next few years. "They'll need somebody to drive them and with the effort I've put into them, I hope they'll see the light," he said. High on his list of priorities is establishing the township's niche as a centre for tourism in Durham. Mayor Hall formed the Economic Development Committee last year to look at all aspects of economic develop- ment in Scugog, with tourism as oneofthe principle focuses. "We will see a lot of effort in "scoTT. ERRY STAR Mayor Howard Hall, who has served two terms as Scugog's mayor, has thrown his hat into the ring for another term in the promoting tourism in the area over the next few years and as we are sitting on a lake we should take advantage of this and promote ourselves," he said. The mayor has met with Dur- ham Region's Economic Devel- opment Committee to deter- mine an assessment of the revenue generated from the var- ious local activities. "We all benefit from tourism. There are so many spin-offs," he said. "Indirectly we all gain from tourism. Some of'it is hard to pinpoint, but it's there. I'm absolutely sure of it." Another project which the mayor would like to see reach fruition is the construction of a large retail and commercial de- velopment in Port Perry. For a number of years there have been various proposals put forward concerning a plaza at Highway 7A and Water Street and Mayor Hall believes this project could become a reality shortly. There is also a number of resi- dential developments which he would like to see come on stream in the future. Last year, council granted municipal ser- vices for approximately 200 units, paving the way for con- struction. "Here in Scugog, even though the climate hasn't been good, we haven't sat back and done noth- ing. We have provided a number of services and dedicated time to a number of important pro- jects," he said. The mayor sees an optimitic period ahead over the next three years, which is also en- couraging him to seek another term of office. He sees a number of promising developments which could come on stream as well as a good industrial base to support jobs in the community. Looking back over his past two terms in office, Mayor Hall credits the help of his council ministration of the township. "My success has been the abil- ity to recognize the capabilities of people and they are all in the right jobs. And I'm glad I was able to make the best use of the knowledge of these people," he said. "We've all had our disagree- ments at one time, but council is able to come together after and work for the best interests of the community." Although he said it has been a mostly positive stint in office to date, the mayor does note some disappointments including the failure to attract a large train- ing school to the area and the relatively slow pace of residen- tial construction. "Things didn't progress as you'd want," he said. "It's been an unfortunate time for us and for everybody." Despite the negatives, the mayor looks to the future with optimism, predicting his third term in office will be the most productive. "I feel positive about the township and I want to continue on." "I'm deeply indebted to the community for giving me a live- lihood and I want to give some- thing back."
