The rink, with Dale Van- Camp as skip, took the top prize. With two seconds Jeft in period two, Blayne Kin- nunen scored from Alex Wor- dley and Aaron Chambers. At 13:06 of the third period, David Gainey scored, assisted by Jeff Neal. David Gainey com- pleted his hat trick at 9:36 to give Port a 5-3 lead as the game ended. Playing in goal for Port Perry and seeing 40 shots was Michael MacLennan. Game four saw Port Perry de- feat Hespeler 4-1 in a real emo- tional game. Port Perry's defen- sive sensation Ryan McQuade was handed a savage hitting from behind attack which sent him to the hospital by ambu- lance by a big Hespeler for- ward. Scoring for Port to open the scoring was David Gainey assisted by Scott Sanderson at 7:32. Scott Harper scored from the point at 5:23 from Nick Pe- lyk. Hespeler scored to close the gap to 2-1. There wasn't any more scoring in the first period. The second period was score- less. Hespeler pulled their goal- ile with a minute left in the third period and Scott Sander- son scored on the empty net for a 3-1 lead, assisted by Travis Pickard at 0:30. Hespeler kept the goalie on the bench and Port scored their second open- netter from Ryan Moynes unas- sisted at 0:14. Port Perry Overhead Doors were in the big dance for all the 40 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, February 8, 1994 HF marbles against the Little NHL BlackHawks. Port opened the scoring at 1:00 of the first peri- od when David Gainey and Tra- vis Pickard sent Alex Wordley in on a breakaway and made it 1-0. The Oshawa BlackHawks are a pretty good team but the tired and battered Overhead Doors Peewees were slowly running out of gas. Oshawa scored at 7:19, 6:06 and 1:33 to take a 3-1 lead, after two peri- ods of play. Port scored at 8:38 when David Gainey scored from Scott Sanderson and Jeff Neal to make it a 3-2 game ear- ly in the third period. As the third period ran down, so did the Red Machine from Port Perry as they gave it all they had but the legs just weren't there against this big Hawk team from Oshawa. Oshawa scored four unanswered goals on the lonely Port Perry goalie to give Oshawa a 7-2 victory and win the Shriner's Tourna- ment. Playing in goal for Port Perry and seeing 46 shots was Corey Branton. Port Perry vs Belleville The Overhead Doors Peewee "B" hockey club were in Belle- ville and taking on the home- town team right in their own backyard. Port Perry lit up the scoreboard first when Scott Sanderson took a pass deep in the Belleville zone from David Gainey and Justin Sheehey as he slams it to the back of the net to give Port the early lead 1- 0. Scott Harper took a Belleville Hometown Proud! winger into the boards to nulli- fy a good Belleville rush at 10:00. Brad Johnston put a nice pass on Deryk Campbell's stick in the Belleville slot and it just missed the open top corner at 9:43. Ryan McQuade took -a hard check at 8:27 deep in Belleville territory. Port was playing well, trying to add to their one-goal lead. Aaron Chambers made a good defen- sive move to turn Belleville away empty-handed at 6:20. As the period was winding down, Belleville was starting to come on until David Gainey handed out a huge check in the Port Perry zone to slow things down a bit. Scott Harper owned the corners, handing out some im- pressive bodychecks. Port was having their chances with all the lines working well but Belleville scored two fast ones at 1:54 and 1:15 to take a 2-1 lead after one period of play. Port Perry was moving the puck well early in the second period causing Belleville to leave their game plan and chase the puck. At 10:25 Ryan McQuade blasted a hard shot from the point that forced the Belleville goalie to come up with a big save to keep their one goal lead. Jeff Neal let a blister- ing slap shot go from the point at 8:45 but David Gainey grazed the crossbar with the tip-in. At 8:38, Port was press- ing in the Belleville end when Jeff Neal passes to Scott San- derson to the left of the goal, be- PORT PERRY STAR pair of The Port Perry I.G.A. Juniors split a pair of games last week- end. The opening game In Markham was a playoff game in which the girls never seemed to get on track with the refs show- ing their presence by control- ling this game. Markham had jumped out to a 4-0 lead late in the first period when Shona Moase broke int® the score column with the assist going to Natasha Burgess. In the second period, the teams exchanged a pair of goals. Scoring for Port were Shona unassisted and Lisa Bonser from Jen Pashley. The final was 6-3 in Markham's fa- vor. Sunday morning the 1.G.A. girls travelled to Lindsay for an exhibition game against an un- defeated Lindsay B team. It took the team just four min- ' Juniors split games utes to figure out the opposition netminder, who played well in an onslaught that was relent- less. Scoring for Port in a game where the score could have been worse were Lisa Bonser - three, Jen Pashley - two, Shona Moase - two, Linda Payne - one, and Jill Topham who had the bench on its feet by notching her first of the season in a 9-3 rout. As- sists went to Linda, Natasha, Brooke Shanley, Jen Pashley, Shona and Jill. A special thanks to Janna Se- nyk and Brooke Shanley for fill- ing in and doing an exceptional job, Janna on defence and Brooke on forward, when some of the regulars were unavaila- ble. Next week, the 1.G.A. team travels to Pickering to test themselves against their arch- rival. Time af- ter time, David Gainey and Scott Sanderson were just miss- ing close in. Port Perry came our hard and fast in the third period when David Gainey, Scott San- derson and Justin Sheehey were all robbed by the Belle- ville goalie from close in at 13:41. Port had a two-man advantage at 3:59 but Belleville dodged the bullet, shutting Port's powerplay down. At 1:40 Jeff Neal teed one up and let a hard one go from the point. Brad Johnston as usual, along with Kinnunen, were really fly- ing out there, playing good two- way hockey. Blayne Kinnunen was stick handling well in the Belleville zone, creating a good scoring opportunity. The horn sounded to end the game with David Defeating Goliath 5-3. Playing in goal for Port Perry was Michael MacLennan stop- ping 40 shots. Honorable men- tion for Good Hustle goes to Alex Wordley and Brad John- ston. Honorable mention for Good Defensive Effort goes to Ryan McQuade and Ryan oynes. Blayne Kinnun, Alex Wordley and Brad Johnston skated miles forechecking.
