PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, February 15,1994 - 13 "A Family Tradition for 128 Years" / For Sandra Riches, returning to Port Perry High School was a homecoming. Ms. Riches was appointed principal of the high school at the end of January. With that appointment she returned to the school from which she was groomed for the new position. From September, 1990 to June, 1992, she served as vice- principal at the school. And when she was ready to assume the position as princi- pal, she knew of no other school she wished to go than Port Perry High School. When she was asked by her superiors at the Durham Board of Education where she would like to work, she knew that the type of school, the size and the location all took her to Port Perry. It was her previous experi- ence at the high school that con- vinced her to return. She knew the ability of the teachers, she knew the community and she knew the students. She knew the fit was right. SCOTT ANDERSON / PORT PERRY STAR Sandra Riches, formerly a vice-principal at Port Perry High School, returned at the end of January to take over the duties as principal. See story. PPHS' new principal is a familiar face "It's a truly composite school," she said. "It's a well-balanced school." Ms. Riches is impressed with - the attitude of the school and what it has to offer to the stu- dents. She said under one roofit offers something to all students from basic level studies to ad- vanced and the extra curricular activities such as music, clubs and the sports. This reputation for a well- rounded learning atmosphere is known throughout the region, she said. Having worked in five differ- entschoole in her 20-year career in Durham, Ms. Riches is able to compare her experiences from the large "urban" schools of Oshawa and Whitby to the smaller schools such as Port Perry High School. Ms. Riches believes it is the commitment of the teaching staff at PPHS that sets them" apart from the larger school. "At some of the larger urban schools, there is a mentality that they teach a specific sub- ject area only, but at Port Perry High School they teach the stu- dents: and the students first," she said. The teaching staffis also gen- uinely interested in the stu- dents and the community, she said. "The teaching staff looks at the whole student and appeals to them greatly." And while the teaching staff at the school receives her ap- proval, the students are a nice complement at well, she said. "The majority are excellent, mortvated and thoughtful," she said. More survey copies available Last week the Township of Scugog Economic Development Committee sent out copies of a survey to all households in Scu- gog. The purpose of this survey is to obtain the opinions of resi- dents on issues such as Tourism promotion, business develop- ment, recreational, and commu- nity services. It hopefully will become an important resource in developing plans and pro- jects in each of these categories. The committee is actively en- couraging all residents to com- plete the survey form and make their views known. There is a possibility that some households in outlying ar- eas did not receive a copy. If so copies (one per household) may be obtained at the following lo- cations: Aldred's Corner, Scu- gog Island; Country Conven- BUSINESS COMPUTERS FAMILY COMPUTERS New or Used Get the Full Package All Major Packages Hardware ¢ Software * Tutoring Setup © Support & Service Call WILLIAM M.
