16 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, February 15,1994 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Greenbank Folk Society sold out The Greenbank Folk Music Society presents Willie P. Ben- nett this Saturday night at the Greenbank Hall. Willie B. Bennett as a song- writer blends the philosophy of a humanist with the imagery of adreamer. His songwriting is not his only talent as he demonstrates through the use of a guitar, har- monica and his baritone voice. His first brush with music was at the age of four while lis- tening to Hank Williams' records. During college he be- gan playing the guitar and writ- ing songs. His first performance was in 1970 and he formed his first band "The Bone China Band" in 1973. Two years later he went solo and recorded his first album "Trying To Start Out Clean." At the same time he was a featured harmonica player with "Dixie Flyers," a Canadian bluegrass band. Since 1979, Willie B. Bennett has performed in every major festival in Canada. His music is heard from coast to coast and as faraway as Europe. In the early 1990s he signed to the independent Dark Light Music Ltd. record label. In July last year his sixth album enti- tled Take My Own Advice was released. The album features a collec- tion of country, roots and zydeco songs with other pleasant sur- prises. The music of Willie P. Ben- nett will be heard at the Green- bank Hall on Saturday, Feb. 19 at 8 p.m. Opening for Mr. Ben- nett will be Pat Kilbride of New York. Tickets for the event are already sold out. This is to be held on April 9, 1994 at 7:30 p.m. in the Greenbank Hall. Do- nations can be anything from babysitting, lawn/garden care, gift certificate, craft or wood- working, items purchased, host a dinner party or have a kids party, any professional services - use your own imagination. Suzanne Lee attended a PFAFF workshop in Frankfort, Ontario last week. This was a training workshop on their new computerized 7550 and 6000 se- ries of sewing machines. They are so impressive! She would be happy to demonstrate this new line of machine to find the one that fills all your sewing needs: The Youth Group meeting is on Feb. 20 at 7 p.m. at the church. New members Grade 6- 12 are all welcome. Come and join us. We have some very ex- citing things on the go. Grade 6 of Greenbank School had a bake sale on Friday to raise funds for the Easter Seal Campaign. The class donated $187 to the fund. Good work students. Let's play ball!! Greenbank Minor Ball registration will be held on Friday, March 4 from 6:30 - 9 p.m. Saturday, March 5 from 10 am. - 12:30 p.m. at Greenbank Community Hall. This registration will include boys and girls ages four - 19 in- clusive. Please register and avoid late fee charges. Ida and Archie Pacific ENERGY: NO PAYME were residents of Greenbank for many years. Our sympathy is extended to their sons Murray ed Doug and all of their fami- ies. The Brian Gibson family and relatives motored to Parry Sound for a weekend of snow- mobiling. What perfect weather for fun in the snow. My granddaughter, Jennifer Treleaven of Barrie, visited with Don and I on Sunday. With her was her new fiancee Dale Chalklin of Stroud. They en- Jjoyed toboganning on the Greenbank Hill and so proud to show off her beautiful ring to granpa and nana. We really have to sit back and enjoy our grandchildren growing up. Time goes so fast. The Greenbank Women's In- stitute will be held on Wednes- day, Feb. 16 at 1:30 p.m. at the home of the president - me - Hel- en McKean. The Roll Call - "Something we can do to im- prove the lives in our communi- ty." Please join us. Mr. and Mrs. John Kronister hosted a family party on Sun- day. It was a birthday party for their grandchildren Ashley and Justin. It was a very happy day for Maryanne and John to have all the family gathered around them. We are so glad to know our good neighbors are well and enjoying the winter. Lions Light Up Greenbank Thanks to the community for their tremendous supportin the Lions light bulb blitz. The prof- its from the sale were used to help finance the ski program and floor hockey nets at the Greenbank Schoal. The Lions Club in Greenbank held a painting bee and donated the paint and trim to the Green- bank Hall. Other funds are be- ing used to fight curable blind- ness. Come out and meet the - Lions at the hall on Wednesday, Feb. 16 at 7 p.m. and see what our next community projects will be. The Lions Club now collects food for Operation Scugog at all its meetings. Anyone wishing to purchase our 5000 hour light bulbs, phone 985-3723. This Saturday the Folk Music Society presents Willie P. Ben- 'nett. It looks like another sell- out, so phone 985-8351 for the last few tickets. Anyone wishing tickets for the Hawaiian Holiday Dance, phone 985-3723. The tickets are $10 each and all the money raised will be used to help main- tain and improve the hall and parks in Greenbank. The dance is only two weeks away and it looks Tike a fun way to break the winter blues. This is the one major fundraiser for the hall and we appreciate your sup- port.
