30 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, February 15,1994 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" On Monday, Feb. 7 the Scu- gog Overhead Doors Peewee B hockey club was hosting the Trenton Golden Hawks in game three of their best of five series. After a long tournament in Belleville on the weekend the Doorsmen should have been tired but they looked pumped. As the Port Perry team hit the ice the arena got noisey as the crowd cheered for our home town heroes. Port got into this one real quick. Port couldn't get the power play to click but the line of De- ryk Campbell, Nick Pelyk and Brad Johnston was really fly- ing. At 12:39 Nick Pelyk handed out a how you like me now body check deep in the Trenton zone to keep the Golden Hawks off balance. Alex Wordley was fly- ing in the opening period and hit Travis Pickard at the half marks and oh what a pad save the Trenton goalie came up with. The play was going back and forth and the Port Perry goalie was playing well also. Travis was in alone on the Trenton goaltender and dinged it off his shoulder and up and over the glass to stop the play. Trenton came right back at 11:05 and smacked it off the post and down the ice she goes. Scott Harper welcomed a Trenton winger coming over the Port Perry blue line to Scugog Arena when he delivered a huge hit to break up the rush at 10:50. Port was holding the edge in play thus far in the period when Brad Johnston (Beast) laid a nice pass on Deryk Campbell's stick in the slot as he just missed on the short side. At 7:54 Scottie Harper got clobbered in the Port Perry corner but ended up with the puck anyway. Tren- ton was just coming out of their own blue line at 7:50 when Jeff Neal delivered a crushing hit to send the play back into the Trenton zone. Port lit up the scoreboard first at 6:34 when the Port Perry captain David Gainey hit Scott Sanderson in front and Scott slips a low one into the far corner to give Port a 1-0 lead. The first Port Perry goal turned the Doorsmen on as they applied even more pressure. Brad Johnston split the Tren- ton defence and was in all by himself as he blasted it just wide. Trenton intercepted a Port clearing pass and scored on a breakaway at 3:35 to tie it up 1-1. The Trenton crowd had hard- ly quit cheering when Aaron Chambers smacked a winger along the boards and fired the puck up to David Gainey at cen- tre, to Scott Sanderson who was on a clear cut breakaway and blasted it past the sprawling Trenton goalie. Chris Jones took his man into the corner boards at 1:42 to break up a Trenton power play. Trenton tied the game at 2-2 at 1:08. With the period wind- ing down David Gainey took the play into the Trenton zone and set a good pass in the slot to Scott Sanderson and he slipped it to Justin Sheehey at the side of the net and he scores! Yes!! Port takes a 3-2 lead at the 0:05 mark to end the first period of play. Port started the second peri- od with Brad Johnston and Nick Pelyk doing some impres- sive passing and just missed the top corner as Johnston let one fly at 14:10. Port was pressing Trenton but Trenton was ready to quit. renton came to the Port Perry blue line on a two on one with only Harper back as he slides to break up the rush to keep the one goal Port Perry lead in tact. Trenton finally jammed one past the Port Perry goalie during a goalmouth scramble to tie it up 3-3. Alex Wordley and Travis Pickard got control of the puck when Aaron Chambers and Scott Harper took their men hard into the boards but the Trenton goalie was up to the challenge. At 10:29 Scott San- derson looked as if he was going to be in on the Trenton goalie and when the Trenton defence- man leaned towards Scott he slipped a beauty pass over to Deryk Campbell in front as he slams it deep in the Trenton net for a 4-3 Port Perry lead. Alex Wordley tested the Tren- ton goaltender with two quick shots at 8:45. Nick Pelyk let a hard one fly from the point that got tipped off the post by Camp- bell. Sheehey, Wordley and Johnston put on a passing clinic at 3:06 that forced the Trenton goalie to make the save. With 1:55 left in the second period Jeff Neal blasted one from the point and Ryan Moynes took the rebound around the Trenton net to Nick Pelyk who made a good move to get free as he fired it upstairs to beat the goalie cleanly for a 6-3 lead. Trenton scored from the dot to close the gap to 6-4 at 0:31. Ryan Moynes took his man coming over the Port Perry blue line head on and he made the Trenton winger sit on the seat of his pants in a hurry. Trenton came on hard to start the third period throwing some hard checks. Both teams were playing good two way hockey with the spectators getting their money's worth. Trenton scored at 11:13 to close the gap to 6-5. Scott Harper and Jeff Neal were patrolling the cor- ners and Aaron Chambers and Ryan Moynes were doing the same along the boards. This Port Perry team were really playing disciplined hockey. David Gainey was setting up some nice plays in this game and at 9:44 Dave lugged the puck into the Trenton zone to Travis Pickard who fired it high to beat the Trenton goalie for a 7-5 lead. At 8:29 Brad Johnston put a lead pass up to Alex Wor- dley as he scampered down the ice and made a night deposit to give Port a 8-5 lead. Port goalie, Corey Branton got hurt and was forced out of the game at 5:29 and Mike Ma- cLennan came in for relief. Trenton wasn't ready to load the bus yet as they came after Port Perry. Trenton had Port hemmed in their own zone and finally got one by the Port goalie after four quick shots. With Port still ahead 8-6 "Overhead Doors win close one at home Brad Johnston, Nick Pelyk and Deryk Campbell went into their forechecking routine. The horn sounded to give Port Perry an 8- 6 victory and a 2-1 lead in the best of five series. Trenton outshot Port Perry 40-25. Michael MacLennan saw eight shots in the last five min- utes. Playing in goal for Port Perry was Corey Branton and Mi- chael MacLennan in relief. Honorable mention for good hustle goes to Alex Wordley and David Gainey. Honorable men- tion for good defensive effort goes to Scott Harper and Aaron Chambers. Nice forechecking by Brad Johnston, Deryk Campbell and Nick Pelyk. Port was playing as a team and displaying lots of self disci- pline. Nice game guys. The team missed the Smurf (Blayne Kinnunen) out there but see you Thursday in Trenton Blayne. Doormen eliminate Trenton from playoffs On Saturday, Feb. 12 the Scu- gog Overhead Doors Peewee B hockey club played host to the Trenton Golden Hawks in the fifth and final game of their best of five series. With the series right down to the wire, there was no tomorrow for either club. In the dressing room the Overhead Doors coaching staff waved their magic wand one more time and this well oiled red machine took off. Right from the opening face- off Port Perry took the play right to Trenton applying lots of pressure right off the bat. Port lit up the scoreboard first when the Port Perry captain took the draw at 14:25 deep in the Tren- ton zone to Brad Johnston, back to David Gainey and he slammed it past the stunned Trenton goaltender to give Port Perry the all important first goal and make it 1-0. Both goaltenders got into this one in a hurry being tested of- ten. Travis Pickard picked up a nice pass from Alex Wordley at the Trenton blue line and found Blayne Kinnunen cruising in front as Port takes a 2-0 lead. Ryan McQuade took control of the puck deep in Port Perry ter- ritory and waltzed the full length of the ice at 8:20 and forced the Trenton goalie to make a good skate save. Trenton scored at 8:30 on a scramble in the crease to make it a 2-1 game. Trenton came in on a clear out breakaway at 5:46 that tied the game at two all. The Port Perry captain put a huge hit on a Trenton winger deep in the Trenton zone. Brad Johnston was forechecking the way he does as well along with Deryk Campbell. Ryan McQuade stopped a two on one at 4:42 with a nice poke check. Travis Pickard took a pass at the Trenton blue line and the Trenton goalie stopped two shots at close range to keep the score at 2-2. Port came back at 3:19 when Deryk Campbell had the puck behind the Trenton net, out front to Brad Johnston and Port Perry took the lead 3-2. Brad Johnston and Nick Pe- lyk made good hits behind the Trenton net that gave Deryk Campbell a good scoring oppor- tunity at the side of the Trenton net. At the 2:30 mark the Port. Perry defenceman Jeff Neal lugged the puck over the Tren- ton blue line, to the right faceoff dot to Blayne Kinnunen as he laid a perfect pass in the slot to Alex Wordley which gave Port a 4-2 lead. Trenton opened the scoring early in the second period at 13:22 when they tied one up in- side the blue line and blew it past the Port Perry goaltender. Trenton had made a goaltend- ing change to start the second period. At 11:04 David Gainey and Scott Sanderson combined on a good passing play close in and just missed as the goalie got a pad on it. Justin Sheehey was taking a lot of pounding along the boards but kept coming up with the puck. At 10:37 Brad Johnston and Nick Pelyk pep- pered the Trenton goalie with two hard shots. Port's goalie was tested very often in the second period but made the save when he had to. Trenton was coming on at 9:24 and was controlling the play. Port caught Trenton flat footed at 9:11 when Gainey put a nice pass over to Scott Sanderson at the Trenton blue line and San- derson used the two on one to his advantage as he used David Gainey as a decoy and blasted it high on the goalie's glove side for a 6-3 lead. Trenton scored at 8:08 to close the gap to 6-4. Jeff Neal took a big hit at the Port Perry blue line at 4:27. David Gainey took a nice pass from Scott San- derson at the faceoff circle and tied it up and blew it past the Trenton goalie high for a 7-4 lead. David Gainey and Scott San- derson were putting on a pass- ing clinic deep in the Trenton zone at 1:28. Alex Wordley fired a close in shot just wide of the top corner with Port putting the heat on Trenton in the closing moments of the second period. David Gainey set up Travis Pickard perfectly in the slot and what a glove save the Trenton goalie made with 28 ticks left on the clock. Blayne Kinnunen put a Trenton winger on the seat of his pants in a hurry with .08 seconds left in the second period and Port Perry ahead 7-4. With Port Perry winning by a 7-4 count after two periods of play Trenton had to get some- thing going and quickly. Tren- ton came out using the body. Port was playing good disci- plined hockey and their skating game was too much for Trenton to handle. Port Perry usually plays the way the other team does so at 14:25 Scottie Harper playing another good game on the Port Perry defense did some major mugging along the boards deep in the Port Perry zone. Deryk Campbell and Justin Sheehey had some good chances at 12:23. At 9:11 Jeff Neal and Chris Jones made a good defensive move to break up a Trenton at- tack. In the early going of the third period Trenton took some long shots on the Port Perry goalie trying to get one the easy way but found out quickly that they better find another way. Port was playing as a team and it was one for all and all for one. Port Perry's defence of Aa- ron Chambers, Ryan Moynes, Ryan McQuade, Jeff Neal and Scottie Harper all stood tall in the rear court. David Gainey, Scott Sanderson, Scott Harper and Ryan McQuade did a good Job at killing the Port Perry pen- alties. At 7:14 after trying to slash the Port Perry goalie the whole Port team ended up in the cor- ner letting Trenton know that this behavior wasn't tollerated in Port Perry. Two Trenton players were sent to the bus along with the trainer for mouthing off at the referee. Nick Pelyk took the play into the Trenton zone at 6:30 and hit Deryk Campbell in the slot but the goalie came up big. Blayne Kinnunen was doing a good job backchecking along with Brad Johnston. At 5:15 Deryk Campbell took the play into the Trenton zone, to Brad Johnston in front, back to Ryan McQuade at the point and he air mailed one to the top corner to make the score 8-4. Travis Pickard was doing a good job moving traffic out of the crease to let this goalie do his job. With the clock winding down frustration was setting in and Trenton started the dirtv stuff. Three Trenton players took Alex Wordley into the cor- ner, each one handing out a body check but Alex just wouldn't go down. As the horn sounded to end the game the players came off the bench to congratulate their goaltender. Playing in goal for Port Perry was Corey Branton seeing 30 shots. Port Perry had 42 shots on the Trenton goal. Honorable mention for good hustle goes to Travis Pickard and Brad Johnston. Honorable mention for good defensive ef- fort goes to Scott Harper, Ryan McQuade, Jeff Neal, Ryan Moynes and Aaron Chambers. Nice game guys.
