Durham MP Alex Shepherd is planning a series of town hall meetings to garner suggestions on how to change the much hat- ed Goods and Services Tax. A meeting is scheduled for March 2 at the Latcham Centre in Port Perry. Mr. Shepherd was appointed to the Finance Committee in Ot- tawa recently. This group is re- sponsible for studying all as- pects of the country's financial institutions. "From a political point of view, the GST has been a night- mare for Canadians," he said. "It's been a real monkey on eve- ryone's back." With this in mind, Mr. Shep- herd is planning these meetings in order to get ideas and sugges- tions from the constituents on how to change the tax. He would then present the findings to the committee at a future meeting. Mr. Shepherd is also contem- plating conscripting some of the residents to present their views atthe meeting in Ottawa. It is Mr. Shepherd's belief that the meetings in Ottawa have focussed too heavily on the views of the various politicians and groups, while paying little heed to the normal Canadian. He said public involvement will provide a "street level" view. "The problem with the com- mittee is that it tends to be too upstreet. We're not talking to the actual guy pounding the pavement," he said. Although many would like to see the GST eliminated com- pletely, this will not be the case, however. Noting that it generat- 'ed the government more than $14 billion, Mr. Shepherd said it was too important to cancel. "The federal government is in no position to see it disappear," he said. , But there would be changes to the tax. Among the changes be- ing discussed are a retail sales tax, an expenditures tax, or a Value Added Tax (VAT). "We're looking for some com- mon ground to make it more pal- atable to people," he said. Youth charged in theft A youth has been arrested in connection with a break in at a Scugog Island store. According to Durham Region- al Police, a 17-year-old male was arrested on February 7 and charged with break and enter in connection with a break in at Al- dred's Corner Storein January.
