Ln "A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, February 22,1994 -9 Letters to the editor Need harness racing news To the Editor: As a regular reader of your newspaper, I would like to make you aware that a large portion of your readership (val- ued customers) are devoted har- ness racing fans like myself. Your coverage of our favorite sport is quite limited and I thought it might be as a result that you are unaware of some of our everyday accomplishments and contributions. Harness racing in Ontario is very job-creative in that it em- ploys directly, and indirectly, in excess of 30,000 men and wom- en. Racing has no employment barriers and the overwhelming majority of the work is of a hands-on experience. Currently, Ontario is host to 18 Standardbred (Harness) race tracks and over two dozen teletheatre (off-site) wagering = locations. In 1994, 6.1 million harness racing fans will attend a racing program in Ontario which includes over 4,100 com- bined days of exciting enter- tainment. Wagering revenues from those who choose to bet will contribute to the Provincial Treasury $41.4 million in gross pari-mutuel taxes. As you can see, Ontario Harness racing generates large revenues, create thousands of jobs and contributes substantially to the good health and fiscal stability of Ontario. Throughout the world, Onta- rio horsemen and women are recognized as the leaders in harness racing excellence. An- nually, Ontario horses domi- nate the North American sea- son ending awards and this year voting results were no dif- ferent. In 1993, the United States Trotting Association had 12 horse categories that each se- lect a dominant horse and Onta- rio owned or trained horses won ght of the 12 titles. These in- clude two-year-old winners Wesgate Crown, Freedom Friend and Armbro Monarch. Threesyear-old Presidential Ball and Ellamony and Aged Trotting horse Earl, Aged Trot- ting mare. Lifetime Dream, Aged Pacing horse Staying To- gether. Staying Together also won the prestigious USTA Horse of the Year honor for own- er Bob Hamather of Exeter, On- tario. In Europe, Ontario horses and drivers also fare quite well and much of Europe's prize trot- ting stock has "Ontario Roots." In 1992 Sweden's premier race of the year the Sovalla Elitlopp was won by the trotting sensa- tion "Billyjojimbob" owned by Mike and Lori Wade of Sea- grave and expertly driven by Sunderland's, Murray Bre- thour. In closing, as you can see in this short letter Ontario men, women, and horses dominate the harness racing world and we receive very little recogni- tion for our efforts. For your next harness racing story, call the Ontario Harness Horse As- sociation should you require any facts. The O.H.H.A. office is open weekdays 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. and their telephone num- ber is (905) 854-2221. Thanks for your attention. Yours sincerely, John W. Taylor Another new tax To the Editor: The Farm Registration and Farm Organizations Funding Act requires that all Ontario farm businesses with a gross in- come of $7,000 or more in the re- cent taxation year must: *Register with the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food (OMAF) providing name, address, and basic business in- formation annually *Pay an annual refundable fee of $150 (GST included) to one of the accredited general farm organizations (GFOs). OMAF is registering us again! This registration isin ad- dition to the Ontario Farm Tax Rebate Program registration (annual), the Beef Herd Im- provement Program registra- tion (update approximately quarterly), and the regular OMAF surveys -- in our case there have been two telephone surveys in the past six months. The two 'GFOs' that will so handsomely profit are the Christian Farmers Federation of Ontario and the Ontario Fed- eration of Agriculture. They in turn will fund the Union des cultivateurs des franco- ontariens. OMAF is to collect yet an- other tax or marketing board levy from producers, the funds should go toward maintaining those programs which help market our produce, not toward lobby and other interest groups which, if deserving of funding, would generate it in the same way all the other associations do -- from voluntary contribu- tions. Yours sincerely, Martin Feaver, English a hard language To the Editor: This letter is not merely for publication, nor is it a com- plaint. I simply wish to point out that during the 10-15 years that I have been sending occa- sional letters to the editor of the Port Perry Star, not once has any letter been rejected or mis- quoted. The oversight in the above (rights for rites) only con- firms that English is a hard lan- guage, as I pointed out. I thank you for the services and pleasures you have provid- ed over the years in the Port Perry area. Yours truly, Warren T.
