On Sunday evening a large crowd attended the Grief Work- shop conducted by Grief Educa- tor Tom Easthope of Oshawa. Following a very informative talk, a question and answer pe- riod was followed by refresh- ments. This event was ar- ranged by the C.E. Committee of the United Church. Many from this area joined his many other relatives and friends who attended the Open House in honor of Ralph Sad- dler's 80th birthday. This birth- day party was held at the home of his daughter Janice and Richard MacKenzie and family on Sunday afternoon. Gloria and Ian Scott, Ralph's older daughter, co-hosted this event. Happy birthday, Ralph. The annual Golden Slider competition was won by Black- stock Curling Club defeating Port Perry Club at the fun event last Monday night. Remember World Day of Prayer will be held Maxch 4 at Nestleton Hall. There were 10 tables at the weekly card party with the fol- lowing winners: Carl Ferguson, Nerta Masters, Jean Porrill, Doreen Ferguson, Ray Staples, Margaret Finney and Betsy Staniland. Lucky draws were won by Teresa Berkers, Kath- leen Watts, Charlie Campbell, Marion Staples, Carl Ferguson and Jim Emerton. Blackstock Fair was well rep- resented at the annual Ontario Association of Agricultural So- cieties convention last week. Directors attending were: Mer- rill and Jean VanCamp, Leah Frew, Barry VanCamp, Helen and John Coates, David and Kathleen Petrie, Millie Coy, Jo- die Duff, Kelly Gatchell, Mark Graham, Gerald and Joyce Kel- ly, for various times of the event. Blackstock did well in the various competitions win- ning three prizes in the photo- graphic competition winning the plaque for most points in the Junior Section in the Slide section, two prizes in the Photo section and third prize in the Display competition. On Feb. 26, the Durham East Junior Farmer's Banquet and Dance will be held at the Nes- tleton Hall. Pot luck dinner be- gins at 7 p.m. and the dance at 9 p.m. Young people are invited to attend. Morning Unit of the UCW by Connie Swain The Morning Unit of the UCW met at the Church with 19 members and one visitor present on Tuesday, Jan. 8. Our hostess, Eileen McLaughlin, served a delicious brunch. Unit leader Edith McLaugh- lin opened the meeting with si- lent prayer. The minutes of the last meeting were read and adopted. Thank you notes were received, one from Kelly Van- Camp of Mt. Sinai Hospital in Toronto thanking the ladies who made 16 isolette covers for the neo-natal unit. She en- closed pictures of these covers in use in the unit at the hospi- tal. A donation was given to the Hospital Auxiliary of Commu- nity Memorial Hospital. The worship was led by Ruby VanCamp. Her theme was "What do you think mission is?" Several ladies participated in a skit depicting "An Overseas Mission History" from the early 1900s to the 1990s. We then watched two videos, one from a rural congregation in New Brunswick, the second from Grace United Church in Hano- ver. From these we developed the question, "What is our mis- sion?" The meeting closed with a benediction.
