Shane Fischer was outstanding in goal and had defensive help from Bran Harms and Mike Koury. This was a hard fought but a fairly well played game! The final full Sunday of the regular season finally got the standings set as to who will play whom in the playoffs, which will start in two weeks time. The first game of the day was the one that everybody had their eye on as it matched the first place Brooklin Bruins against Woody's Auctions. With only a one-point difference be- tween the two teams, it was still anybody's ball game in regards to the winning of the League trophy. The first period ended with Monsma up by one on a goal by Ron Attwood from Ken Lynde and Kevin Ibbitson. This held up until the dying minutes of the game when Woody's scored two to pull ahead. After taking a time-out to gather strategy, they scored the tying marker with 3:04 left to play when Ken St. Amant and Randy Sullivan set up Charlie Dennis. They got the next one with just 1:20 to go and it looked like they would pull it off as Wa- dat scored from St. Amant. Brooklin then used the same idea as Woody's as thay took their time-out to map their plan of attack. It also paid off as they knotted it at two on a goal by Lynde from Ron Attwood. In the five-minute total goal overtime, both teams netted three cach to leave the game tied at five apiece. Scoring for Monsma were Attwood with his second following league sconng champ Nick Attwood with a pair. Picking up the assists were Nick, Lynde, and Dan Jan- sma. Dennis, Brian McBride and Randy Sulhvan replied for Woody's with assists going to Wadat, Jim Gregg and Rob Ma- SON. Malmont Atoms win championship of home tourney On Feb. 19 our Atom As host- ed teams from Whitby, New- market, Stroud, Keswick, Scar- borough, Port Hope and Lindsay in our annual Malmont Tournament. It was a happy ending when Mr. Neil Malcolm of Malmont Farms (who has sponsored this team for several decades) was able to hand out the championship trophies to our own group of young men. The route to the champion- ship started off with a thrilling 4-3 double overtime win over Whitby. Dean VanCamp scored the winner from Jason Whit- worth and Sean Jeffrey with each team playing three men out to start the day off right. Ja- son had earlier notched two first period goals with assists by Steven Wygerde, Billy Carr and Adam Moynes. Our other goal was by Scott Brownson from Joel Thompson. Chris Monsma ("Bart") made several fine stops to repel many attacks by the Whitby Squad including an overtime penalty shot. Game two for our team was a 5-2 win over a tough team from Keswick who had earlier defeat- ed Scarborough. Near the end of the game Port was clutching onto a 3-2 lead but empty net goals by Jason Whitworth (un- assisted) and Billy Carr (from Chris Skerratt and Matt Mac- Master)iced the victory. Earlier markers for Port were by Dane As the standings for the re- mainder of the league were al- ready established, the final two games of the day meant nothing but practice to the other four teams. B&R Swampers blanked the Blackstock Brewers 3-0 in their affair with Dale Lown notching a pair, with the single going to Mike Butt. Drawing as- sists were Dave Canning and Dan Taylor. Keith Tremblay re- corded his sixth shutout of the season. In the last game, Emmer- son's Insurance also earned a shutout as they downed the Framer's Gallery 2-0. Larry Re- urakas picked up his second shutout of the campaig for Em- Gray (from Scott Brownson and Chris Skerratt), Dean Van- Camp (also from Chris Sker- ratt) and Jason Whitworth (as- sists by Adam Moynes and hustling 'defenceman Matt Cracknell). Grant Hooker and David Jus- tynski were rock steady throughout the contest in con- trolling their corners and the areas in front of Chris Monsma. We were lucky to have Pat Der- rane on the bench to back up Bart in case of injury. The stage was set for our Mal- monts (who were enjoying the coziness of the ModJack's dress- ing room for the day) to face off against Stroud in the champi- onship game. Stroud had al- ready bumped off Lindsay and Newmarket to reach the final. In period one "birthday boy" Matt MacMaster got his team on the board with assists by Scott Brownson and Billy Carr. Stroud won the second period and took control of the game with two goals. With an ex- change of goals (Chris Skerratt from Adam Moynes and Jason Whitworth) early in the third period the situation was looking grim for local fans and for our heroes with Port behind 3-2. And then it happened....coach Teresa Hutchinson called Chris Monsma to the bench and went Turnto Page 27 Monsma wins broomball title merson"s. In the meantime, the offence was supplied by goal scorers James Hudgins and Mike Jones, with Jones adding an assist as well as Danny Brown and John Gerber. Woody's and the Framer's will be travelling up to Angus in the Barrie area this upcoming weekend to represent the league at the Regional Play- downs in the Tier One level, therefore there will be no broomball at the local arena. In two week's time on March 6, the playoffs will get underway with Woody's hosting B&R at 4:30, to be followed by Monsma and Blackstock at 5:30. Juveniles eliminate Uxbridge from playoffs by Paul Wylie Port headed to Uxbridge on Monday night to hopefully play in their arena for the last time. This would be accomplished if Port managed to win the next two games. Both teams came out flying for the first game. Port jumped up 1-0 while on the power play. Again, two Ux- bridge defenders went after Vanderligt, and meanwhile, Ennis was left all alone with the puck and shovelled it past the goaltender. At the start of the second pe- riod, Port tried to relieve the pressure by throwing the puck around the boards. With only a half effort by the Port winger, the puck got back to their de- fence. The ensuing shot ended up in the net. The game was tied 1-1. At 7:18 of the period, Uxbridge's Joe Jones decided to use McArthur's face mask as a toy and Port ended up on a six- minute power play. This is when the Key-Bar Juvies walked away with the game. During this time, we managed to score three times. The first one came after Wylie caused some interference in front of the net. Vander Slagt got the goal with Card and Wylie picking up the assists. Seconds later, Puck- rin passed to Fitzgerald who sent a low shot on goal; which Turnto Page 28 oo Co oa Su me sae AR EEE aa ami a ei AL ELL gL a
