To what? Lions Club helping to deliver the gift of sight By Scott Anderson Port Perry Star The main goal of the Lions Club International is to eradi- cate preventable blindness. And to this end, the various member clubs throughout the world have done their parttoen- sure this goal is met. With this in mind, the local chapter of the club is very seri- ous about its mission. In fact, it has gone to the source to help people's chances of seeing again. Through an arrangement with Community Memorial Hospital in Port Perry, the Port Perry Lions Club is involved in delivering human eyes, desig- nated on a donor card, to an eye bankin Toronto. "The Lions Club Internation- al's main goal is preventable blindness, so this is an ideal fit, said Wayne Wannamaker, a member ofthe Port Perry Lions. "We feel good about doing something for the community, the hospital and the eye bank. I know the hospital is very appre- ciative that we are doingit." Mr. Wannamaker, along with a number of other members in the service club, are on call night or day should a need arise for theirservices. The eyes must delivered within eight to 10 hours after removal. Therefore, time is of the es- sence. "It's imperative that they be delivered as soon as possible," Mr. Wannamaker said . To date, approximately six pairs of eyes have been deliv- ered to the eye bank since the club became active in the pro- gram last fall. The most recent delivery was made last Friday. Although many would feel uncomfortable in handling a package with the sensitive con- tents, Mr. Wannamaker realiz- es the importance of the deliv- ery and takesitallin stride. "I felt a little uncomfortable at first, but the fact that you're helping somebody else see, takes all the discomfort out of it." And the job takes on even a little more personal significance for Mr. Wannamaker. Recently, his grandmother was the recipi- ent of such a donation when she had a cornea transplant. The Lions Club is involved ex- tensively in providing people with the gift of sight and is in- volved in various projects and causes including the Canadian National Institute for the Blind, the Seeing Eye Dog School, and Campaign Sight First.
