"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, February 22,1994 - 7 Letters to the editor New Democrats work for you To the Editor: The recent settling of con- tract differences for a basket- ball franchise to Toronto 1s a very clear indication of the dif- ference between the Bob Rae New Democrats and that of the Harris Conservatives or the McLeod Liberals. Both Mcleod and Harris were in support of and advocat- ing the cancellation of basket- ball from the Pro Line sports lottery. This was a complete ca- pitulation to the demands of a U.S. controlled private enter- prise venture by the John Bi- tove, David Peterson group. That is what would have hap- pened had either the McLeod Liberals or the Harris Conser- vatives been the governing par- ty in our Ontario Legislature to- day. A windfall favor to a few wealthy Torontonians. ~ The Rae New Democrats on Contraband cigarettes From Page 6 But about that tax: 1. He scrubs legal tax to com- pete with no tax illegals...but so far only two provinces agree with him. What kind of leader- ship bows to illegals? (I prefer to think that it wasn't to Quebec) and frustrates the other prov- inces in the doing. 2. We hear he'll be slapping a heavy tax on cigarette manufac- turers (which will no doubt hike prices again) --- and can you be- lieve he intends to use this tax to finance discouraging us to smoke? That's cute. Some of us believe that cheap smokes will encourage more ac- tion in the opposite direction. 3. Why do you suppose gov- ernment is prone to taxing pon- derous, wavering, complicated, costly solutions to problems that beg straight, ingenious (K.1.S.S.) alternatives? Question: Why not simply im-- pose an export tax on cigarettes to wipe out profit and willing- ness to smuggle? Afraid of arousing cigarette manufacturers? Come on! In ambiguous ways: government tells us that they want cigarette manufacturers gone. Hey! If those guys were with integ- rity or love...they'd be long gone. Ron Ward, Janetville, Ont. the other hand, negotiated very favorable monetary package that would benefit cultural and social organizations throughout the province. That is the real Democrats should be returned to office in the next election.
