"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, March 1,1994 - 11 Committee aiming for March 21 budget The pieces of the budget puz- zle are starting to come together In Scugog.. And Finance Committee Chairman Yvonne Christie hopes to put it all together in time to present it to council on March 21. A number of organizations appeared before the committee on Monday with the hopes of having their respective budgets approved, but no decisions will be made until alater date. "Until the numbers are ap- proved by council, it's all fic- tion," Councillor Christie said. "There is not a whole lot of mon- ey togo around." The Finance Committee Chairman noted that the as- ---------- EMMERSON INSURANCE SROKERS LIMITED 193 QUEEN ST., PORT PERRY, ONT. Last year, the township pre- sented a budget which saw an increase of 0.894 per cent. The 1993 budget saw expenditures of $6.5 million and revenues of $3 million. A general tax levy of $3.5 million was required. This year, council plans to present a budget with no in- crease. And it appears most of the or- ganizations which presented their budgets to council on Mon- day morning have this in mind with two out of the three asking for little, if no increase over last year. Although Scugog Shores Mu- seum Village's total budget is estimated at $75,678 for 1994, as opposed to $90,7651in 1993, it is seeking $43,274 in municipal grants and $7,100 in capital grants. "In as much as thisis a year of restraint, we are asking for more money, however. This may not look very practical," said Gary Moore, a museum board member. But the members argued the increase was needed to offset costs in improving the village, as well as reaching pay equity with the curator. It was also noted that, due to a large fundraising campaign last year, they are not contem- plating alarge drive this year. "We've tried to be as efficient as possible in drafting this re- port," Mr. Moore said. The Roads Committee also presented its budget on Monday and came within $6,400 of last year's number. The committee presented a proposed budget of $1,799,200 for 1994, compared with a figure of $1,792,798 last year. Committee Chairman Har- vey Graham expressed a need for this money noting it would be used to improve the town- ship' s roads. "We're concerned our roads adequacy has dropped and the only way to improve that is by putting money into construc- tion," hesaid. Over the past 10 years the township's roads adequacy rat- ing has dropped from 85.5 per cent to 55.7 percent. The Parks and Recreation Committe also came to the table asking for an ever so slight in- crease in funding. Committee Chairman Mari- lyn Pearce presented a budget with an increase of $453. The budget featured a bottom line of Cost: $55/child * Children must be pre-registered registration The Township of Scugog will be offering this new and exciting opportunity for children to participate in a variety of Arts, Sports, Games, and Winter Activities. According to Councillor Pearce, the Parks and Rec De- partment is going through a re- organization which would see arena staff shifted to parks du- ties during the summer months. This reorganziation includes the implementation of a Recrea- tion Co-ordinator to facilitate these changes. As a result, $33,710 1s re- quired for this expense, com- pared with $16,650 last year. "I think as a council, we must recognize that Parks and Rec has two segments," she said. "With this budget, we are recog- nizing the needs for a parks and rec co-ordinator. The Finance Committee will consider all the requests before arriving at abudget in March. MERCURY DON'T | T hi IF THE STEERING OF YOUR FRONT OR REAR WHEEL DRIVE VEHICLE IS MAKING YOU SHAKY...
