"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, March 1,1994 - 15 Uxbridge association seeking help for therapeutic program By Scott Anderson Port Perry Star When Jim and Annette Young were looking for some- thing to do in their retirement, the couple was pleased a friend gotthemon the right track. And now, three years later, the feelingis still the same. Mr and Mrs. Young serve as volunteers at T.R.A.C.K. (Ther- apeutic Riding Association for Challenged Kids). The Uxbridge school offers horseback riding therapy for physically handicapped, learn- ing disabled and developmen- tally delayed children. The lessons are designed to best suit the individual child with a strong emphasis on creating high levels of motiva- tion and self-esteem. The natural movement of the horse aids in correcting the child's balance and movements. It helps to restore the muscle tones tonormal levels. Although the program is de- signed for the kids, Mr. Young said he benefits from the pro- gram as well. Not only does he get satisfac- tion in helping out the children, he also benefits from the exer- cise involved. He estimates during the course of an evening he walks approximately four miles. "It's good exercise for us and it contributes something to the community," hesaid. But he said the real satisfac- tionisin helpingthe children. "It's an all-around experience * and we feel we're doing some- thing positive." Perhaps the most satisfaction is seeing the kids improve at the hands of the volunteers. Mr. Young said when the children first begin the program some have difficulty even sitting up, but through the program are now able to sit up. "I've seen some kids really make progress," he said. The Youngs find the program so enjoyable that the Sonya couple volunteer six to eight hours of their time each week. This time 1s spent preparing the horses as well as working with the kids. But this commitment is far more than is required of a volun- teer. Sandi Vasey, secretary co- ordinator for T.R.A.C.K., who is currently in the process of look- ing for new volunteers, said the average commitment for an in- dividualis 2.5 hours a week for a six-week period. . Ms. Vasey said there 1s a real need for more volunteers for the spring programs. Currently, 63 children are enrolled in the pro- gram, with more on a waiting list. These cannot be accommo- dated until more volunteers are recruited. "We need to have as many vol- unteers as possible. You can never have too many," she said.
