Inspired play gives Tweens third place Port Perry's Guardian Drug Tweens played inspired rin- gette to finish third overall in a pool of five Central Ontario Re- gion "A" teams. As this season comes to an end, Port's Tween A girls con- tinue to improve and become a force with which to be reckoned. The Central Ontario Region provincial competition has five area teams. Port Perry's squad entered the competition as the underdog. First opponent - Ajax. Four previous encounters had ended up as Ajax victories. Not this time! Lauren Christie, our first year goalie, provided the cata- lyst for this 3-1 victory. Key saves gave the opportunity for great breakout plays as the one and only Bonni-Jo Norton as- sisted on two of the goals. Ja- nine Hammond registered a natural hat trick thanks to the sharp pass and pick up of Jenni- fer Elliot, Alechia Cracknell and Amanda Wakeford. Nu- merous Ajax charges were thwarted at the blue line by the defensive duo of Janna Senyk and Brooke Shanley. A dejected Ajax team could not believe what had happened - a Port Perry 3-1 victory. Game two - It took only 13 seconds for Whitby to score their first of four goals in a 4-1 Whitby victory. An uphill strug- gle saw Laura Hooker find the high corner with one minute re- maining to break the Whitby shutout. Jennifer Elliot and Diane Vanderligt assisted on this one. Once again, numerous saves by Lauren Chnstie kept the game close. Spirits were low as Port's Guardian As took to the ice against Oshawa. The girls played hard but of eight goals scored against us, five were on the power play. Port Perry's ag- gressive play against a small, speedy Oshawa team accumu- lated penalties that led to an 8- 3 Oshawa victory. Between pen- alties, Janine Hammond snapped in two goals. Bonni-Jo Norton's determination set up Amanda Wakeford for Port's third goal in this game. With Provincials out of sight, a high-spirited Port Perry group played Pickering with third place on the line. A bois- terous group of fans brought out the best of Port's Tweens on Sunday. Jennifer Elliot found the scoring touch on this one - three times. Two of these were set up by the hard work of Lau- ra Hooker. Amanda Wakeford's hard free pass shot put Port ahead 3-2 at the half. Then Brooke Shanley's birthday sur- prise - a goal! Moving up from defence, Brooke's shot hand- cuffed the Pickering goalie and almost broke through the mesh. Diane Vanderligt pegged the corner on a Laura Hooker pass and then Janine Ham- mond split the defence as Port was comfortably ahead 6-3. Penalties and innovative line changes let Pickering tie it up and a nervous coaching staff re- aligned, Bonni-Jo set up Jenni- fer Elhot for the game winner with one minute left. Insurance goals were also scored by Ja- nine Hammond and Amanda Wakeford. Final - Port 9, Pick- ering 6. A respectable third plizce fin- ish will give these hard- working girls the confidence they need in next weekend's Ajax Silver Stick tournament. KELLY LOWN/PORT PERRY STAR ModJacks' goaltender Rick Hutchinson played a strong game to lead the MoJacks to a four games to one series victory over the Little Britain Merchants Feb. 25. The win advanced the MoJacks to the league championship against Bowmanville which the \ MoJacks are leading one game to none. MoJacks lead championship series From Page 22 ter the first shift you forget about it." Menzies' club goes into the fi- nal against the Eagles as un- derdogs,. something he feels should help inspire his players to play hard. "It can't hurt us," said Men- zies. "They're a balanced club and they've got a good team. Theyre the favorites so let them be the favorites." As far as his own team is con- cerned, Menzies couldn't be happier. Several of the Mo- Jacks that were injured are now back and it also appears that the flu bug that swept through the roster is now but a memory. - The Port Perry power play continues to shine as it has throughout the playoffs, and the production of Clair Cornish, Todd Dennis and Shannon Todd 1s now being offset by oth- ers hike Keith Leslie, Jason Co- chrane and Jeff Parry who have improved as the playoffs have unfolded. Defensively, the Modacks have been steady, keeping the opposition at bay to give the of- fence a chance to do its job. With veteran blueliner Gavin Cochrane in and out of the Port Perry lineup from game to game, the rest of the defence core are picking up the slack. While protecting its own goal, the MoJacks' defence has been Steve Staniland able to step up and also provide some offence through ats first 10 playoft games. Leading the way arc Steve Stantland and Kevin McDonald who have combined for I1 goa's and 19 pointsin the playoffs thus far. So with all cylinders firing, the MoJacks are set to bang heads with the Eagles in what promises to be a classic Central Ontario cham pronship series. Here's a report on game five of the semi-final series against Little Britain. Port Perry captain Clair Cor- nish had a five-point night in an 8-3 win Wednesday night in Scugog Arena, setting the stage for Thursday and giving the Modacks a chance to put the Kevin McDonald Merchants away. Port Perry opened the scor- ing Thursday at 8:47 of the first period. The Modacks, having failed to capitalize on an early power play, kept the puck deep in the Merchants' territory. Shannon Todd scooped up a loose puck in front and went to the backhand to beat Fleming, notching his first of two goals on the night. Bill Mercer, who was run- ning over anything with a red shirt on Thursday night, has been a physical presence for Port Perry throughout the playoffs and it was Mercer who set up the ModJacks' second goal at 11:57 of the first period. Mercer picked up a Cornish rebound in front of the Little Britain goal and slid it across to Steve Laird who fired the puck past the lunging Merchant net- minder. Port Perry held a 2-0 lead un- til late in the first when, with only 12 seconds left in the peri- od, Little Britain's Rich Welner was sent in on a break-away. Wellner went to his left and lift- cd a backhand over Rick Huteh- im=on in the Port Perry net to pull the Merchants within a goal. The Modacks had several chances in the second period to put some distance between themselves and the Merchants but were unable to score. Cor- nish set up at least three oppor- 'tunities that probably should have been put away but it seemed the puck kept hopping over the Port Perry sticks or Fleming would come up with the big save. Fleming's play kept it close long enough. At 13:20 of the second period, Little Britain drew even. Garry Shaw's slapshot from the right wing eluded Hutchin- son after deflecting off a Mo- Jack defender. The score remained tied until 12:29 of the final period when some gritty forechecking by Na- than Brown created a goal. Following a dump-in, Brown pressured the Merchants' de- fender, eventually stripping the puck in behind the Little Brit- ain goal. Brown then fed the puck out front to Todd whose wrist shot got by Fleming. for the winning goal. Little Britain pulled Fleming in the dying minutes but were unable to score the tying goal. aj oe 3k sfc pe 3 ae ae ae ae ake ofc of ofc ofe de The ModJacks met the Bow- manville Eagles in game one of the Central Ontario League Championship on Feb. 27, and came out with a hard-fought victory.
