A recent article in Oshawa- Whitby This Week cited a report which suggests major changes would take place at all six of Durham's hospitals. According to the report pye- pared by Durham Regional Dh trict Health Council, Durham will have one full-service in the east and west and a regional re- habilitation hospital in the cen- tre. The report also stated the fu- ture of hospitals in Bowman- ville, Port Perry and Uxbridge were tentative. The recommendations are part of a $277,000 health care study by DRDHC. Under the plan, one full- service hospital would be estab- lished in the western portion of Durham Region, most notably Ajax, while Oshawa General Hospital would serve as the hos- pital for the east. Bowmanville Hospital is being considered for enhanced ambulatory and out- patient roles. Whitby General Hospital would be converted to a regional rehabilitation centre of excellence. The hospitals in Port Perry and Uxbridge would be hit as well with the number of short- stay beds being downsized from between six to 10. Police said the car battery had been charging for approxi- mately three hours before it was removed. It was then placed on the parts counter when it ex- ploded for no apparent reason. The customer was taken to Community Memorial Hospital by police, where he was treated for minor injuries to his eyes. The store employee was un- harmed. Toddler escapes serious injury A Port Perry toddler escaped serious injuries after falling down a flight of'stairs last week. According to Durham Region- al Police, the baby who was in a walker, fell 17 stairs after stray- ing too close to the edge. His mother was on the telephone at the time of the accident on Feb- ruary 23.
