The students at the school have been using the playground equipment since it was first in- stalled 15 years ago. The equip- ment was maintained yearly, until it was declared irrepara- ble at the beginning of the cur- rent school year, and has since been torn down. School boards do not provide playgrounds, leaving it the sole responsibility of communities. A committee of parents has formed to come up with a strate- gy to raise funds for the play- ground. The parents are hoping for a playground open to the whole community as there is no public playground in the ham- let, and the school does not have a gymnasium. The committee of parents are aiming for $20,000 and want to have the playground built over the summer so it will be opera- tional in time for the beginning of the next school year. The committee's goal is for a good quality playground, that will meet the safety standards and appeal to children four through 11 years of age. Students at Epsom Public School have already undertak- en many forms of fundraising. Students collected '$1,000 from the sales of chocolate bars, pic- ture frames and magazines, and $1,800 was raised at a recent skate-a-thon held at Scugog Arena. The committee is reaching out to three areas of the commu- 1..ty seeking help in its fund- raising efforts. The community is hoping to garner support from the immediate school communi- ty of students and parents, the local business community and the public. A proposal was sent to the township's Parks and Recrea- tion Committee council, which showed concern over the loca- tion of the park. The park, located where chil- dren must cross Regional Road Sap flows at Purple Wood This March a flurry of spring- time activities is set for Purple Woods Conservation Area. In connection with Celebrate Dur- ham '94 events, Purple Woods is hosting Maple Syrup Demon- strations on March 12 and 13, as well as on the 19th and 20th. The 19th and 20th is also Sen- iors Weekend at Purple Woods where there will be weekend shuttles available to help sen- iors from the parking lot to the sugar shack. Food Bank Week at Purple Woods will be from March 12- 20. Non-perishable food items will be accepted and all dona- tions will be going to the Year Round Crisis Food Bank in Oshawa. March 16 is Pancake Day! Have pancakes with melted butter, covered in fresh, sweet maple syrup. In order to reduce garbage, bring your own uten- sils and plates. With the approach of spring a person may be sure of several things, birds will be singing and pancakes will be flipping on March 26 and 27 at the Purple Wood's Pancake Weekend. Make sure to come out and help Celebrate Durham '94 at Purple Woods Conservation Area. 8, concerns the committee and is creating a dangerous situa- tion, said Marilyn Pearce, chair- man of the Parks and Recrea- tion Commitee and Ward 2 councillor. The Parks and Rec. Commit- tee would like the group to re- consider the location, as the pro- jected location is not a neighborhood park for a variety of reasons. If the park is to be a neighborhood park the commit- tee could allot money for the project, but not if it is being pur- Hl... Hd ORT PERRY auto glass &* trim nd. chased only for school children. "If it was a neighborhood park, we would probably consid- erit," Councillor Pearce told the Star. Donations to the playground fund can be dropped off any weekday morning at Epsom Public School, or to any commit- tee member. Any donations of more than $25 will receive an in- come tax receipt. A plaque, recognizing all of the donors will be displayed at the completed playground. 139 Water Street & 6 High Street, Port Perry Written + BR Guarantee e INSURANCE WORK ° SAVE uwto *50°° On any one replacement WINDSHIELD Insurance Claim with most insurance companies with this coupon at time of purchase 3 Locations ® Mobile Service All Work Guaranteed 985-8507 Port Perry 668-2003 Whitby Down the street or around the world, the Red Cross is there to help.
