28 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, March 8,1994 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Sr ORTS Game three sees 10 players ejected MoJacks lead championship series 2-1 by Shawn Bastarache The Central Ontario Jr. C fi- nal between the Port Perry Mo- Jacks and the Bowmanville Ea- gles was being touted as a potentially classic series and now with three games complete its becoming obvious that early predictions were bang on. After taking a surprising 2-0 series lead with a win Saturday night at Scugog Arena, the Mo- Jacks sat in the driver's seat as the series shifted back to Bow- manville on Sunday. The Ea- gles were heavy favorites going into the league championship and they played accordingly on Sunday, handing the visiting Modacks a 9-4 loss in a game marred by a second-period brawl. Led by Curtis Hodgins who had been relatively average in games one and two, the Eagles put the MoJacks away in the first period, employing a fast, aggressive forechecking game and keeping pressure on the Port Perry defense and goal- tender Rick Hutchinson. Hodgins got his club on the board early when his shot from the left side hit a ModJack de- fender to elude Hutchinson at 3:47 of the opening frame. A powerplay goal by Kevin McDo- nald tied the score at 6:43 before the Eagles' offence turned it up a notch. Hodgins, with one goal al- ready, scored a natural hat trick in just 46 seconds and set up the Eagles' fifth goal at 15:30 to give his club a commanding 5-1 lead after 20 minutes. As it turned out, five goals were enough to earn Bowmanville the win but, by no means were things finished between these two teams who have quickly be- come bitter enemies through the first three games of the championship series. Bowmanville's Gary Arm- strong scored on a breakaway just 39 seconds in period two, giving the home team a 6-1 lead. Armstrong outwaited Hutchin- son, lifting the puck over the Port Perry netminder after he had committed to the low shot. Scott Pollard scored a power- play goal at 3:30 of the second period when he finished off a tic-tac-toe passing play, sweep- ing the puck behind Hutchinson with Duane Empringham in the penalty box. Then, at the seven minute mark the tension that had built up between the two clubs erupt- ed, resulting in a heated brawl that delayed the game for over 15 minutes. As Port Perry's Shannon Todd made his way to the bench for a shift change, he got in- volved with someone on the Ea- gle's bench. The result saw Todd yanked into the Bowman- ville bench, drawing a reaction from the ModJacks' bench. Port Perry assistant e¢oach Chic Carnegie was the first one into the Eagles' bench trying to res- cue Todd from enemy hands. ModJacks' goaltending coach Ian Cooper got into the fray as well as Bowmanville head coach Mark Watson, each receiving a oss misconduct for their parts in the altercation. When referee Gus Bambridge finally got things sorted out, each team had lost five players to game misconduct penalties and a total of seven fighting ma- jors were handed out. With the fireworks out of the way, the remaining players set- tled in to finish the second half of the game. Bowmanville in- creased its lead to eight goals on markers by Dave Stockton and Gary Adams but to the Mo- Jacks' credit, they didn't roll over. Quite the opposite really, as Port Perry, struck for two powerplay goals late in the sec- ond period to make it 9-3 after two periods and a 15 minute melee. Jason Cochrane who, along with backup goalie Shawn La- rocque, arrived late due to a mi- nor car accident, made up for the time he had missed by scor- ing both Port Perry goals in the second period. Clair Cornish set up both of Cochrane's goals, adding an assist on McDonald's first-period goal to give him three points on the night. The Modacks rounded out the scoring when Nathan Brown re- directed McDonald's point shot at 4:14 of the final period mak- ing fora 9-4 final score. Though disappointed with the loss, Port Perry head coach Brad Menzies was anything but disappointed in his players who, despite facing a 9-1 deficit and the loss of Todd, Laird, Ga- vin Cochrane, Brad Moase and Jeremy Ross during the second- period brawl, continued to play hard and actually outscored the Eagles in the second half of the game. "You never expect something like that," Menzies said of the fracas in the middle frame, "and when you lose two of your top defensemen and three forwards you have to make some chang- es, but the guys worked hard and played well in the third pe- riod." It was the first and second pe- riods where the ModJacks ran into trouble giving up nine goals, including four in the span of three minutes in the first pe- riod that really spelled Port Turnto Page 29 Rugby teams from Port Perry High School board a plane today (Tuesday) for a two-week tour of England, Wales and Scotland. Peewee Legionaires advance to All-Ontario finals On Friday night the Legion- aires, up 3-0 in the best-of- seven Ontario semi-finals, host- ed Collingwood for game four. Just three minutes into the game, Collingwood found the mark for an early lead. It was soon evident that both teams had come to play hockey. Wyatt made a good stop on a blistering shot with the inside of his foot...ouch. Port put on a lot of pressure but just couldn't seem to find the mark. At 9:02 we finally beat the Collingwood goalie but the goal was disallowed. Port kept up the pressure and were rewarded at the 11:24 mark when Ian Parliament tipped one past the goalie, as- sisted by Scott Jeffrey and Dan- ny Lyons. In the second period it was more end to end action with great saves by the defense and our goalie, Dann Lee, and no scoring until the 9:20 mark when Seth Gray blasted one by the Collingwood netminder. Glenn McCready assisted on this one. At 13:23, Adam Jones scored from Wyatt and just 21 seconds later Seth got his sec- ond of the night from Derek Tin- dall and Jon Froats. At the end of the second peri- od the Legionaires went for a well deserved rest leading 4-1. Early in the third period the two Adams connected with Hobbs getting the goal and Jones the assist. Seconds later Collingwood scored again, and with only three minutes left, and 1 tt a man short, they scored their third and final goal. Port won 5-3 and advanced to the Ontario finals Mooretown. The first two games of the best-of-seven series will be played in Mooretown this week- end, with games three and four back in Port Perry on March 19 and 20. : against Pearce Auction Novice win B final in Vaughan Pearce Auction took to the ice against Lindsay with the series tied at one game each. This game was a hard-fought contest with Lindsay drawing first blood just minutes into the game. Port Perry battled back a little over a minute later to tie the score on a nice goal by Ja- mieson Smith, agsisted by Tre- vor Lance. The only scoring in the sec- ond period was a lone goal by Lindsay. Port Perry fought hard but couldn't solve the Lindsay goalie's magic. Lindsay scored midway through the third period to make the score 3-1. Less than a minute later, Lindsay was awarded a rare penalty shot, scoring on their attempt to widen the score. Lindsay managed one more goal with just over a minute to go in the game and Lindsay is on their way to battle with a powerful Belleville team. Good work, guys, a great sea- son. Thank you to head coach Bob Spencley, assistant coach Ken Parry, trainer Murray Em- pringham and manager Jim Duncan for all their hard work and dedication.
