SO RN Shin Fn ER & a et er emer mg mon et ma ei 2 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, March 8,1994 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" MNR pleased with ice fishing season From page 1 Vehicle Act, 28 riders were charged this year and 12 were charged under the Off Road Ve- hicles Act. Although the num- ber of charges is down from the 135 handed out last year and 95 the previous year, Mr. Phinney said the shortened fishing sea- son and the extremely cold tem- peratures, which kept many off the lake, probably contributed "to the reduction in charges. Of the charges laid under the two acts most were the result of riders having no insurance or helmets. Mr. Phinney, along with offi- cer Bill Fisher, were on the lake every day during the ice fishing season. In addition to the charg- es which were laid, Mr. Phinney sald numerous warnings were also handed out to snowmobil- ers and fishermen. The conservation officers had an additional chore on the lake this year as with every other year a creel (fishing survey) is performed on the lake. The number of hours spent on the lake by anglers was 51,722, only half of the estimated M & D Meats 30 Water St., Port Perry 985-4316 Hours: Wednesday 10-6, | &¥% |. The number of huts also dropped in the past few years, from a record 804 in 1991-92 to 640 last season and 600 this past year. Again, Mr. Phinney attrib- utes the reduced total angler hours and number of huts to both the reduced season and the cold weather. "There were fewer people on the lake as a whole this season," he said. Although the number of an- glers and hours spent by those anglers were down drastically this year, the total walleye har- vested from the lake was 5,030, compared to 6,100 in 1991-92, which was a full season of fish- ing. "The ice fishing was good this year. I saw a lot of fish being caught. Anglers were catching a lot more fish this year compared to other years," Mr. Phinney told the Star. One area the conservation of- ficers were extremely pleased to see improve was the number of huts left on the lake after the February 28 deadline. Only four huts were on the ice after the deadline and Mr. Phin- ney said he expects them to be removed promptly. Leaving a hut on the ice can carry a fine of $155. "The mild weather a week ago I think helped, as anglers could go out and jack their hut up and have it ready to take off," he said. Last year the dramatic changes in weather left the ice too slushy for transportation to and from the huts and the huts themselves were frozen into the ice, leaving them nearly impos- sible to move. The MNR experi- enced a huge problem as more than 100 huts were on the ice af- fer last year's March 15 dead- ine. = All At Guaranteed Low Prices UNITED CARPET® Largest Carpet Selection in Scugog Township and a member of the largest carpet buying group in Canada HOMESTEAD by Ballard & Carnegie » HWY. 7A EAST - PORT PERRY 985-2451 or 985-2157 Ir FAMOUS Levolor® 74 BLINDS VERTICALS « VENETIANS PLEATED SHADES Siksay & Fraser Of) I'ces L a ww Real Estate, Corporate & Commercial Law, \Y [VU plei] oTs| WCW BIEIVIN fo] o]h p Tata | Ie NV ARVAVI] | RSPCA SEN oY fe Branch Office - Port Perry 204 Casimir Street, Port Perry Phone: (905) 985-4141 Fax: (905) 985-4598 180 MARY ST. "I had no complaints of gar- bage. It seemed to. be good. There was the odd little prob- lem, but nothing serious," Mr. Phinney said. He said the Ministry was also pleased they only received one complaint of someone fishing before the season opened, and one afterit closed. "The publicity of the short- ened season must have gotten out to everyone, and they fol- lowed it," he said. Lake Scugog is now closed to fishermen until Saturday, April 30 when the panned and coarse fishing season will open. Picke- rel season will open again on May 14.
