"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, March 8,1994 - 33 SPORTS On Saturday, March 5, the Scugog Overhead Doors Peewee B hockey club travelled to Fer- gus to take on the Flyers in their own backyard. This was game one in the All Ontario Semi-Finals. It didn't take the Doorsmen long to get into this one as Port controlled the play right off the bat. Port was play- ing well, making Fergus play defensive hockey. At 12:18, the "Smurf" Blayne Kinnunen came flying in the Fergus zone and put a good pass over to Nick Pelyk to David Gainey as he blew it past the sprawling Fer- gus goaltender into the top shelf of the net to give Port Perry that all-important first goal for a 1-0 lead. At 9:16 Scott Sanderson waltzed in on the Fergus goalie all alone and was stoned. Chris Jones, who's been playing good heads-up hockey, made a good defensive play to nullify a Fer- gus rush. As always, the "Beast" Brad Johnston was free. wheeling in the Fergus zone, causing their defencemen a lot of heartache. At 5:44 Port Perry's penalty killers had to go to work. Alex Wordley, Scott Sanderson, Scott Harper and Ryan Moynes did a good job helping to kill the penalty. Brad Johnston, Scott Sanderson, Jeff Neal and Ryan Moynes also helped kill the penalty. Port controlled the play in the first period but Fergus equalled Port's shot count at six shots each. Port turned up the heat a crank early in the second period when Scott Harper took the play into the Fergus zone and put a good pass to Scott Sander- son cutting in from the side boards to Brad Johnston in front as he scored on a goal- mouth scramble to grab a 2-0 lead at 13:50. Nick Pelyk took Port into the Fergus end of the rink again at 12:50 over to Blayne Kinnunen high in the slot to David Gairey. Alex Wor- dley and Justin "Cat" Sheehey were in close on the Fergus goaltender but the goalie came up big to nullify this nice pass- ing play. At the 8:00 mark, Blayne Kinnunen took control from the faceoff and forced the Fergus goaltender to prove he was good. The Port Perry captain David Gainey lugged the puck into the Fergus zone, put a nice pass in front to Nick Pelyk and he took his time, teed it up and blew it by the Fergus goaltend- er for a 4-0 lead. Alex Wordley took control of the play outside the Fergus blue line and fed a nice pass to Travis Pickard at the dot to Justin Sheehey cruis- ing in the slot as he slams it deep to the back of the Fergus net at 7:08. Brad Johnston took time out from forechecking to grab the puck and waltz into the Fergus zone and put a pass in front to Scott Sanderson who scored to give Port Perry a 6-0 lead. At 5:35, Port had Fergus backing up deep in their own zone and Gainey took control of Blayne Kinnunen's shot that missed behind the net, passed it out front but a Fergus de- fenceman deflected the pass into his own net with Jeff Neal getting a helper on the play. David Gainey completed his hat trick to give Port a 7-0 lead. At 4:50, Fergus had Port hemmed in their own zone and scored to close the gap to 7-1. Port Perry's goaltender Corey Branton was replaced by Michael MacLennan. The third period was bump and grind, Scott Harper bump- ing people along the boards and the people grinding to a sudden stop. Harper is the Little Big Man on the Port Perry blue line. It's sure nice to see Ryan McQuade back in action as Port can't afford to lose a super star on defence. At 10:19, Port Perry scored again but the goal was disallowed as a man was in the crease. Port Perry were the only ones being sent to the box as Fergus were penalty-free - yeah, right. Port killed off yet another penalty. At 6:22 Brad Johnston had control deep in Fergus territory out front to Scott Sanderson who lost the puck and Deryk Campbell slams it to the back of the Fer- gus goal for an 8-1 lead. At 5:43, Scott Harper took one for the team as he stopped a break- away and headed to the penalty box. With 0:33 left in the game, Travis Pickard scored from Ryan Moynes and the Legend's Kid Justin Sheehey to give Port Perry the first game of the semi-finals by a score of 9-1. Deryk Campbell was flying out there and had a good chance in close and tested the Fergus groalie but the goalie came up big at 3:30. At 2:35 Scott Harper had a bumping contest with #7 and after two huge bodychecks it was obvious that Harper came out on top. Port Perry had made a goalie change early in the third period replacing Corey Branton who had played steady with Michael Macl.ennan. Port Perry got into penalty trouble again in the dying stag- es of the third period, but once Overhead Doors up two games in semis again there was no damage done.
