Swamp wins first two playoff games The Swamp Auto Body hock- ey team of the Port Perry Ban- tam House League got off to a fast start this past week as they won their first two playoff matches. The Swampers first game was on March 2 in Port Perry against Kast Gwillumbury's Holland Landing Lions and this game was definitely a barn burner right from the opening faceoff. Both teams came out flying with lots of scoring chanc- es at both ends of the rink but these were two stubborn goalies facing the shooters and the first period went by scoreless. The second period was the same fast pace as the first with both teams getting their chanc- es around the other teams net. Then in the dying minutes of the second it was Ron Colvin playing the puck ahead to Ja- mie Sauter who in turn laid a perfect pass onto Jeremy Gib- son's stick who went in on net and ripped one just under the crossbar to give the Swampers a 1-Olead. , The third period was a contin- uation of the first two as both teams continued to play wide open hockey but neither team could put the puck into the net and the game ended with the Swampers pulling out a well fought 1-0 victory. Picking up the shutout for the Swampers was Doug Short who Guardian Tweens wrap The Port Perry Guardian Drug Tween A team wound up its ringette season over the past weekend in the Ajax Silver Ring Tournament. Our first game on Friday eve- ning had us up against the tour- nament hosts. With some of our girls arriving just before game time from a victorious inter- school basketball meet, the win- ning spirit and enthusiasm was infectious. Having beaten Ajax for the first time this year in the previous week's Provincial playdowns and knowing we coulc equally as well deal with the Pickering team, we had a good shot at the gold for this tournament. As had been the case all year against Ajax, this was a closely contested game with lots of end- to-end excitement. Our Guardi- ar Angels were skating, check- ing and shooting hard with some fantastic scoring opportu- nities. The Ajax goalie, howev- er, was undaunted by our bar- rage and picked ring after ring out of the air in defending her territory. Port's Amanda Wakeford opened the scoring in the first period finishing a pretty three- way passing play started by Janna Senyk with Janine Ham- mond in the middle. Despite ex- cellent goaltending by Lauren Christie, Ajax replied with a goal a couple of minutes later. Before the first frame ended, Ajax had netted two more to end the first half with a 3-1 lead. Early in the second period, Laura Hooker reduced the gap to one goal. Assists on this one went to Alechia Cracknell and Bonni-Jo Norton. The coaching staff are still scratching their heads over a shot by Janine Hammond that could have tied the game. This rocket had clear- ly beaten the goaltender, hit both goal posts and, according to the refs, landed flat on the goal line. was solid between the pipes. Special mention also goes out to the Swamp defencemen, Greg Bonser, Noah Dorland, Big Nick Skerratt Ron Colvin and Aaron Levy who keep get- ting better with each game they play. Good hustle was displayed in this game by Jeremy Gibson, Brennan Arsenault, Cory Wi- atrzyk and Jay Fletcher who all played steady two way games. The Swampers next game was on March 5 against Em- mersons Insurance also of Port Perry. Everybody was antici- pating a hard fought game as quite a little rivalry has built up between these two teams. There was a large crowd on and for this affair and they got their money's worth as "this game was definitely one to talk about afterwards. The Swampers drew blood as Jay Fletcher put the puck back to Noah Dorland on the point 'who in turn unleashed a low boomer towards Emmersons net where Kris Wootton redi- rected it into the top of the net giving the Swampers a 1-0 lead. The second period continued to be fast and furious with both teams pressing to get a goal but both goalies were holding their own. Finally it was Emmersons tying it up at one a piece as Mike Lott was sent In on a breakaway and he made no mis- takes with this one. Picking up Ajax stretched the lead to two goals before Amanda scored her second of the night. This time with Jennifer Elliott figuring in the points, earning the assist. This game went right down to the wire when in the dying seconds, the Guardian team ap- plied relentless pressure with six skaters and a two-player ad- vantage. With 38 seconds left in the game, an Ajax player man- aged to grab a bouncing ring and fired a rink-long empty net- ter. Although not figuring in the scoring in this game, mention should be made of Brooke Shan- ley's free wheeling speed out of her end which started many scoring chances; and to Dianne Vanderligt whose multitude of shots in this game continually tested the Ajax netminder. Game two on the following morning had us up against Pembroke, a team who earned the right to represent the East- ern Region in the Provincial fi- nals. This has to be the most ag- gressive and hardest checking team we've seen all year. Port's only goal in this game came from Amanda's freepass shot. In spite of the 5-1 final, the Port Perry team was in this game all the way. It was only in the last two minutes that Pem- broke put this one out of reach. Like so many times during the season, our Tween A squad was always in the game but our shooters were handcuffed by excellent goaltending. Our own goaltender Lauren, deserves special credit in this game, put- ting in one of her best perfor- mances of the year! With two losses, we knew our final game against Pickering was going to be our last one of the tournament, and the sea- son. We could however, play the role of spoiler in determining who would go on to the tourna- ment championship. Pickering came out flying while Port started this one a little flat- the assists on the play were Dan McKay and Jeff McConkey. With time running out in the second period it was Jeremy Gibson restoring the Swampers lead to 2-1 with Kris Wootton and Big Nick Skerratt assisting on the play. The third period had the Swampers start to dominate the game a bit and were getting lots of scoring chances but Em- merson's goalie Luke Carna- ghan was holding them at bay coming up with some timely stops. The Swampers scored their third and final goal as the hard work of linemates Bren- nan Arsenault, Jamie Sauter and Matt Baker finally paid off as Jamie scored from Brennan and Matt to give the Swampers a 3-1lead. The Swampers defence took care of things in their own end the rest of the game not allow- ing anyone to stand around in front of the net and clearing bodies out so goalie Doug Short could handle any shots thus preserving the 3-1 win. Penalties may have been a bit of a factor in this game as Em- mersons picked up five minors, one major and one game mis- conduct compared to the two minors assessed the Swampers but the whole Swamper team deserves special mention for the win as they played as a team with lots of hustle and hard play. Well done Swampers!! up season footed. Pickering jumped into a four-goal lead before Janine broke up a Pickering passing play and went in to score our' only marker of the first period. On a similar manoeuvre, Jenni- fer Elliott was the only name on the scoresheet for both teams for the second period. Unfortunately, during the second period, Amanda suf- fered a shoulder injury and shadowed her best performanc- es of the year. Amanda, all the players and coaching staff wish you a speedy recovery! On behalf of the coaching staff, a thank you to all the players for their effort and dedi- cation throughout the year; a thank you to parents for your continued support; and, on be- half of the entire team, thank you to Guardian Drugs, our team sponsor! Tweens win On March 5, Pineridge Tween Cs hosted Lindsay. Our girls were simply too strong, winning 19-1. Scoring three goals was Melissa Hooker; two goals each to Giselle Codd, Leanne Holt, Jennifer Imrie, Cathy Cooper, Mary Justynski and Diana Bur- nett; one each to Jennifer Don- nelly and Lisa Lefort. Assists going to Giselle (three), Amelie (three), Mary (one), Cathy (one), Melissa (one), Jenn I. (one) and Jackie (one). Sunday, Port ventured to Bobcaygeon for the only game of the year between these two clubs. Pineridge took the game 9-0. Scoring summary: Leanne and Amelie two goals; Jenn 1., Jenn D., Giselle, Jackie and Mary one goal apiece. Assists to Lisa (three), Melissa, Mary, Jackie and Amy one each. Port has one regular season game remaining, against Scar- borough and will use this match as a tune-up for their upcoming league and regional champion- ship series. I ----------
