"This is the first year of opera- tion (for the new diamonds), so there will not be too much com- petitive play," said Marilyn Pearce, chairman of the Parks and Recreation Committee. According to Mrs. Pearce, the road to the diamonds 1s com- plete and the screens and benches are in. Washrooms will be installed by the time the ball season begins and bleachers are inthe 1994 budget. Future plans for the Scugog Centre, which is located behind Scugog Arena, will include trail development for bicycles and walking, connecting to the Scu- gog Youth Soccer Club and an adventure playground. The Port Perry Minor Softball Association, which put $25,000 towards the building of the dia- monds, is scheduling the dia- mond times for the Scugog Cen- tre. The minor ball association will have approximately 20 house league teams playing on the diamonds every day during the week, which will move the ball players off the diamonds at local schools. Other groups and leagues wishing to use the Scugog Cen- tre diamonds can do so by sched- uling dates and times through the minor ball association. The diamonds will be availa- ble for other leagues and indi- viduals requesting times, which are not occupied by the minor ball league, according to Caro- lyn Best, who sheduleg the times. According to Mrs. Bést, t there is a young mens' league and a mixed league which have al- ready enquired about having leagues at the diamonds, and others have reserved the dia- monds for weekend tourna- ments this summer. For the first year there will be no night games at Scugog Cen- tre as there are no lights for the facility. The association, howev- er, is looking at ways to raise money for lights. One such fundraiser will be the Scugog Men's Slo-Pitch League's 96-team "Field of Dreams" tournament scheduled for all of Scugog Township on July 1. The league is holding the tournament in an ettort to help raise funds for the installation of lights at the new diamonds. Organizers of the event are hop- ing to see proceeds between $25,000 and $40,000, which will be turned over to the minor ball association.
