HAUGEN'S MANCHESTER George Rizsanyi's latest acoustic guitar creation to debut on Juno Awards By Kelly Lown Port Perry Star Some of the smooth sounds the audience will be hearing at this month's Juno Awards will have a local flavor to them. George Rizsanyi, of Green- bank, spent 60 hours recently creating a guitar for Jamie Campbell, who is lead acoustic for the group Roch Voisine. Mr. Campbell, who has won such acclamations as Quebec songwriter of the year, and is nominated for a Juno Award this year will use the new in- strument during the awards show. Mr. Campbell, a native of Oshawa, is also the host of this year's annual awards show. Mr. Rizsanyi said he met Mr. Campbell at a James Taylor concert, where he was ap- proached about having a guitar made. Mr. Rizsanyi said he had previously made three guitars from which Mr. Taylor chose one to purchase. The guitar he recently de- signed, made of apple and swamp elm wood, which is found locally, sells for approxi- mately $3,000, and carries a lifetime guarantee. Mr. Rizsanyi has been design- ing guitars on and off for 16 years and has sold more than 100 of his creations. As the Ontario representa- tive for CF Martin, a company located in the United States, he spends most of his time repair- ing instruments, leaving him less time to make them. CF Martin has been making gui- tars since 1833. Mr. Rizsanyi, who along with Mogens Galberg, started up the Greenbank Folk Music Society last summer, has used his con- nections with the folk music world to bring quality concerts to the Scugog area. All of the concerts have been sold out and have attracted many visitors from the city, he said. Mr. Rizsanyi's latest creation can be seen on Sunday, March 20 when the Juno Awards are heldin Toronto. I have been travelling the riding dis- cussing these matters with business owners and employ- ees. I have been struck by the need for small and medium- sized businesses and their em- ployees to be better informed of federal government programs. In addition, I believe it is impor- tant that those interested make their concerns known to govern- ment so that we can develop pol- icies and programs such that existing jobs and new ones will have an environment in which to flourish. that government simply get out of the way of the business com- munity. By this I mean simpli- fying government reporting, etc. As meritorious as this sug- gestion would seem, I believe that a stronger economy can best be served by an alliance be- tween business, labor, financial institutions, educators and gov- ernments. With regard to the interest of small and medium-sized busi- ness, I would like to propose the formation of a business net- work. The pur- pose would be to: a) provide a bitch session so that business people and employees can vent their anger regarding current federal business practices; b) provide a forum to explain changing government policy and to get input from the busi- ness community regarding how they see these matters; c) to re- ceive suggestions regarding the need for changes to government practices; and d) to provide me a forum to float some of my initia- tives in Ottawa by our employ- ment community. With regard to the last point, I am working on a program to provide better financing for small and medi- um-sized businesses. The fact that many of our small retailers have been hurt b, the matching aspect of the announced reduction in the cig- arette excise tax is a case in point. Quite frankly, I was una- ware of this inconstancy in the legislation. One of our business members has brought this to my attention and I have dis- cussed the matter with the Minister of Revenue. We are currently working to resolve this matter which has inadver- tently affected a large number of our small business communi- ty.
