"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, March 15,1994 - 15 In spite of the heavy snowfall last week, spring really is on its way, we are all sure. A week ago, Eileen McLaughlin sighted both a robin and a red-winged blackbird. Bet they were sur- prised when the snow arrived. Dale and Anita Davis have returned from a vacation in New Orleans and Florida where they visited friends. Sympathy of the community is extended to Pat and George Obstfeld, Heidi and Julie on the sudden death of Pat's mother, Mrs. Dorothy Bray. The funeral was held on Saturday from Low and Low, Port Perry. Steve and Lisa Tufts and Hannah of Elgin, Manitoba are visiting Lisa's parents, Helen and Stuart Dorrell and her oth- er relatives in both southern and northern Ontario. On Sunday evening, a family birthday party was held at the Chinese Buffet, Guests were Ruth Thompson, Port Perry, Carol, Rob, Steve and Katie Mairs of Nestleton, Larry and Joanne Werry of Prince Albert, Neil Werry, Ian and Joy Rudkin, Neil and Elaine Bailey, Terry and Tara Bailey, all of Blackstock. The birthdays being celebrated were those of Carol Mairs, Lar- ry Werry, Joy Rudkin and Ruth Thompson, who celebrated her 89th birthday. Happy birthday greetings to you all. There were 11 tables at the weekly card party with the fol- lowing winners: Eldon Fee, Ber- nice Appleton, Ruby Smith, Kathleen Watts, Alma Manns, Eileen Warder and Earla Hill. Draws were won by Kathleen Watts (two), Betsy Staniland, Verna Robinson, Grant Bright and Mary Forest. Next Monday and Tuesday evenings, March 21 and 22, the annual Kelly Bonspiel will be held at the local arena. This is a mixed bonspiel held in the even- ings. Sign-up sheet is at the are- na or call Gerald and Joyce Kel- ly for details. The Morning Unit of the UCW met at the church on Tuesday, March 8 with 16 members and one visitor resent. The hostess, Alma Duff, has prepared a delicious buffet brunch. Each table held a fresh flower, reminding us that Spring may, indeed, be on its way. Unit Leader Edith McLaugh- lin opened the meeting with the new prayer for MPs. After the short business meeting, the worship was taken by Lois Luke on a Lenten theme. Margaret Mountjoy then in- troduced Dorothy Imperial who spoke to us about Community Care in Durham Region. She showed us a video called Neigh- bors Helping Neighbors, nar- rated by Roy Bonisteel, which gave us information on the dif- ferent services that Durham Region Community Care has available. The Oshawa Presbytery Good News Book Store will be opened at Northminster United Church, on Monday and Thursday after- noons and Wednesday evening. The next UCW meeting will be April 12 at 9:30 a.m. with the Morning Unit presenting fash- ions. The Federation Banquet is April 8, the UCW service April 24 and Rumthage Sale May 7. Our vice- president is Laura Dunkly and the secretary is Cassandra Steadman. The treasurer is Terra Watts and the press re- porters are Troy Hazelden and Joanne Benschop. Our group 'leaders are Shelley Holliday and Helen Coates. So far we have come up with a very crea- tive name for our group - The Cookie Monsters.
