26 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, March 15,1994 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Sr PORT PERRY STAIR ORTS MoJacks bow out of league finals by Shawn Bastarache You can sum up the Port Perry MoJacks' 1993/94 season with one phrase - close but no ci- gar. After taking a somewhat sur- prising 3-1 series lead over the Bowmanville Eagles in the Cen- tral Division finals, Brad Men- zies' ModJacks went on to lose two one-goal games and were beaten soundly in Bowmanville Sunday night to fall just short of their first league championship The Port Perry MoJacks lost 7-3 to the Bowmanville Ea- gles on Sunday night. The loss gave the Eagles their second consecutive league championship and it ended the MoJacks season. Please see story for more details. since the 1991/92 season. "They worked their butts off out there and they just ran out of gas," Menzies said after a humbling 7-3 loss in game sev- enon Sunday. { For Bowmanville, the win gives the club, its second straight league title and a chance to meet the winner of the Eastern final between Ernestown and Napanee. The Eagles had to be consid- ered favorites both at the outset Overhead Doors meet Mooretown in finals The Scugog Overhead Doors hockey club travelled to Moore- town to play game one in the All-Ontario Championships. This is a best of five series final for all the marbles. In the first period, Port Perry played as if they had just been on the bus for four and a half hours. At 14:31 Scott Harper took his man into the Port Perry corner and bang "welcome to Peewee hockey" as he handed out a huge bodycheck. Moore- town was rested and ready to play hockey but Port was throw- ing the body around pretty good. Brad Johnston fed a good pass to Scott Sanderson at 13:61 but the goaltender made the stop. Harpie pasted another number against the boards at 11:24. Port was hanging in there getting some good chances in close in the early going. Port's alie Corey Branton was hot and holding the fort. Scott San- derson was in all alone at 9:26 but came away empty-handed. Deryk Campbell had a good scoring opportunity at 5:52 but the Mooretown goalie beat him to the loose puck in front. All in all, Mooretown had the edge in play but Port wasn't ready to pack the bus yet. Deryk Campbell was hit hard in the Port Perry zone at 2:50 but that doesn't fizz on Camp- bell. Brad Johnston was doing what he does so well, lots of forechecking and being general- ly a pest and taking time to make a rush or two as well. The Port Perry captain was trying to set up plays for that all- important first goal. At 2:14, Nick Pelyk introduced his check to the boards causing another turnover. As the period was winding down, Ryan McQuade handed out a good hit at the Port Perry blue line to break up a Mooretown rush. The first pe- riod was scoreless with both teams playing well. Port was playing well but just couldn't catch Mooretown mak- ing a mistake so they could get the all-important first goal. Chris Jones fired a low hard Turn to Page 28 of the series and heading into a game seven, but following an overtime win in game four the MoJacks found themselves needing only one more win in three tries to dethrone the de- fending champions. But alas, a championship just wasn't in the cards for Menzies in his inaugural season behind the Port Perry bench as the Ea- gles soared back from near de- feat to win three straight and successfully defend their title. Jeremie Pate kept the Eagles alive Thursday night when his goal at 6:50 of sudden death overtime forced a game six in Port Perry Saturday night. Not even a hat trick by Jason Cochrane could lift Port Perry to a win in game six as Dave Stockton's goal at 17:47 of the second period stood up as the The Legionaires were off to Mooretown on the weekend for the first two games of the All- Ontario Final eight-point series (best four out of seven) and came home Sunday night with a win and a tie. In the first game, Mooretown came out flying and Shane Savage had to come up big twice in the first 10 seconds. The team is small but they can skate. At the 1:14 mark, howev- er, Adam Hobbs tipped a shot from Adam Jones from behind the net to give Port the lead. Also assisting was Scott Jeffrey. There was no scoring in the second period as both goalies made many key saves. At 1:12 of the third, the Adams did it again with Hobbs getting his second of the game from Jones and Glenn McCready on a two- on-one passing play. At the 10:50 mark, Mooretown made a good line change with a player coming off the bench behind our defence and beating Shane on the breakaway. The game end- Rea winner in a 4-3 Eagles' win, set- ting the stage for game seven in Bowmanville. Eagles' captain Brad Robin- son got the home team started Sunday night when he netted the first of two on the evening at 6:47 of the opening frame. With Steve Staniland in the penalty box for Port Perry, Robinson let go a blast from the slot beating Rick Hutchinson high to the glove side. The score remained 1-0 until early in the second period when Bowmanville's "money" player Curtis Hodgins increased the lead to two and started a string of three unanswered goals in a span of two minutes and 19 sec- onds that essentially won the game for the Eagles. Hodgins' goal at 2:50 was fol- lowed quickly by Gary Arm- ed without further scoring, Port leading 2-1. Game two on Sunday was a different game...a little more hitting and a lot more scoring. Just 29 seconds into the game, Wyatt Park blasted a shot from the point past an unsuspecting goalie for the first marker of the game, assisted by Adam Jones. A minute later Derek Tindall took his turn and beat the goal- ie, assisted by Seth Gray and Jon Froats. It appeared we were on a roll. It was halfway through the first before Moore- town was able to get the puck past Dann Lee and early in the second when they tied it up. With just a minute left in the second, Mooretown scored on a break and they led for the first time in the series. The Legion- aires went to the dressing room at the end of the second, trailing 3-2. Less than a minute into the third, Mooretown scored again. The Peewee Legionnaires have advanced to the Al Zo I-Ontario finals. Pi strong's marker at 3:21. Arm- strong redirected a shot by Jeremie Pate for the first of his two goals in the final game. Then, with the majority of an above capacity crowd behind them, the Eagles scored the eventual winner at 5:09. A per- fect pass from Hodgins sent Robinson in alone on Hutchin- son. Again, the Port Perry net- minder was beaten high to the glove side prompting Menzies to replace Hutchinson with Shawn Larocque. By no means was this move a reflection on Hutchinson's play throughout the series as it was he who was largely responsible for MoJack victories in games one and two. Port Perry finally got on the board at 8:59 of the second peri- Turnto Page 29 Peewee As leading in All-Ontario championship Things didn't look good for Port. Killing off a penslty, Troy Campbell knocked) down a Mooretown pass at the blue line and drove an awesome slapshot past their goalie. We were back 'in the game. With just 1:30 left in the third, on a power play, Troy did it again with the slap- shot from Derek and Adam ed for OT. In overtime, Seth took a nice pass from Derek and blasted the puck, from the slot, past a startled goalie. Port had the lead again. Mooretown did not give up and were able to tie the game at 4:49. The score re- mained at 5-5 for the rest of the game in spite of numerous chances in front of the Moore- town goalie in the dying min- utes. All of the boys played a strong game and we are looking forward to the next two games, Saturday at 5 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m. in Port Perry. NIE By THMED ITC PVE ctured are members of the team.
