"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, March 15,1994 - 5 Taxpayers facing 2.8% tax hike from Bd. of Education By Scott Anderson Port Perry Star Taxpayers could see a 2.8-per cent tax increase if the board of education passes its budget. Durham Board of Education staff and trustees are putting the final touches on the 1994 budget and projected a 2.8-per cent increase. This would amount to approximately $35 for the average household. Although the budget is esti- mated to come in at $369 million -- $12 million less than last year's $381 million figure -- a tax hike was necessary to offset cuts in government grants, Bob- bie Drew, the board's Finance Committee Chairman, said last week. The provincial government plans to revert back to the 1992 level for transfer payments. As a result, the board will see a 9.2- per cent reduction in grants. The board will also be feeling the pinch as a result of an eight- per cent increase in tax on em- ployee benefits. "We're working with less money," Mrs. Drew said, won- dering whether they have seen the last of the provincial cuts. "I'm very concerned that the province is going to cut us back even further than they said." But it will be a wait and see game for the boards as the pro- vincial government is not set to announce its budget until April. Most decisions have been made concerning the budget and the necessary program cuts being made, but the final num- bers will not be known until the board is certain of the availabili- ty of transfer payments. "I think we're going to have to see where the transfer pay- Two men, woman charged with fraud Three employees of a Scugog recreational vehicle dealership face fraud charges. During the month of August, 1993, the Bombardier Credit Company of Mississauga com- plained to Durham Regional Po- lice regarding a fraud which had occurredin Scugog and Oro- no. According to police, 37 recrea- tional vehicles had been sold and the proceeds converted, contrary to the conditional sales contracts. A number of methods were used to convince the lender that the dealership still had posses- sion of these vehicles, including registering the units twice with the Ministry of Transportation, once in the customer's name and once in the dealership's name. A 46-year-old Pickering wom- an and two Sunderland men aged 34 and 36, have been charged. They are to appear in courton March 18. All were employed by North Brock Motor Sales which oper- ated sales lots in Scugog and Orono. Parents warned after attempted abduction Durham Regional Police are cautioning parents and chil- dren to be careful following a re- cent abduction attempt in Port Perry. According to Police, a 12- year-old boy was walking along Water Street at approximately . 4 p.m. on March 6 when a full- sized black vehicle pulled up to the boy. The man pulled out a badge, identifying himself as a police officer and offered the boy a ride telling him he shouldn't be outin the snow. The boy refused the ride and ran home. Another young boy was ap- parently in the vehicle. Police have few details on the description of the man other than he was a white male. According to police, this is an isolated incident. 197 Queen Street, Port Perry Hours: Mon. I don't think we're going to garner any more by cutting more programs," she said. The board recently completed the task of reviewing a list of 41 potential areas for change as part of the budget process. The cuts included the reduction of 36 staff members, including five trustee positions, cuts in custo- dial and secretarial staff, a sav- ings of $700,000, the implemen- tation of all-day, every-other- day kindergarten ($640,000) and the reduction of all depart- mental budgets across the board by five per cent. Despite the changes, Mrs Drew believes the public will react favorably to the budget. "I would hope that they feel that we have trimmed this bud- get as much as possible, while still providing a quality educa- tion to the students," she said. "I believe the changes are in the best interest of the kids, while saving money, and to me that's a win-win situation." MARCH 30 - G.I1.C.
