ds A a Wo NE Rs "A Famlly Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, March 22,1994 - 19 SPORTS From Page 19 period 2-1 as Cory Wytrazyk scored from Lisa Bonser and Kevin Edwards. The Swampers continued to protect their one goal lead into the third but then at the half- way mark were caught pinch- ing in and Newmarket broke out on a two-on-one and the shooter made no mistake as he tied the game up with a hard slapper from the hash marks. With the game tied at two, the final horn blew indicating that we were now headed for sudden death overtime. Both teams started out the overtime a little tentatively but then they really started to open it up, creating lots of scoring chances for both teams. The Swampers just couldn't get a good shot as Newmarket's de- fence was doing a good job of protecting their net. Then in After a three week layoff the Port Perry Bantam B Techstars started the All-Ontario finals in Port Elgin this weekend. Unfor- tunately, that long of a layoff seemed to take its toll on our boys and they came out pretty flat in the first period of game one. Luckily the goaltending of John Babbcock was superb and he kept us in the game until the second period when Port Elgin were able to find an unprotected side of the net and at the end of the second they had spread their lead to 4-0. Our boys are not quitters and with a burst of speed Matt Phil- ips made a quick shot on the Port Elgin goalie with Shane Norton ready to pick up the re- bound to score the Techstars first goal. However, Port Elgin was again able to get past our forechecking and Scott Wilson scored his second of the game to Bowling results "Thursday Night Mens Standings: Paul Dick Con- tracting 6851, Dowsons 6680, Philp Pontiac Buick 6532, Cen- tennial Lanes 6488, Legion 6422, Emmerson Insurance 6364, Brians Towing 6273, Causeway Live Bait 6262, IGA 6107 High Single Flat: Ed Johan- sen 288 High Single With Handi- cap: Ed Johansen 294 High Triple Flat: Ron Smith 728 High Triple With Handi- cap: Ron Smith 830 Games over 215: G. The players were all presented nice trophies for winding up as A Fi- nalists from the tournament convenors. This tournament was well- played and hard-fought all the way, to the final goal by the Swampers. Well done. You all get an A for this tournament. The Swamper hockey team would to thank Pizza Delight for the free personal size pizzas each player was given and also a thank you to Steve Lee and Ralph McCullough for their hard work in running this suc- cessful tournament. Layoff hurts LL; advance their lead that much further. Less than a minute later Port Perry's Ashley VanSchelven worked hard in behind Elgin's net and made a great pass outin front of the net to Todd Parry who was quick with his first shot, but stopped by Elgin's goalie. However, he wasn't so lucky with the rebound as Todd caught him down and out of po- sition to make the save. This was a game of many penalties and when Port Elgin got one with four minutes left to go in the game coach Jamieson decid- ed to pull our goalie and opt for the extra attacker to see what we could do. Port Perry did a lot of hard work but just couldn't get it past the fine goaltending by Port El- gin. With only 14 seconds left in the game Port Elgin scored on the open net bringing the final score to 6-2. On Sunday our team came out looking like a different group of players and in the first period we were all over Port El- gin. The boys learned that on this smaller ice surface they had to try to play a different style of hockey than we are used to. Gavin Baxter and Jamie Strickert had many fine at- tempts at goal scoring but again came up against a hot Port El- gin goaltender. Rob Gracie scored our first goal after four minutes into the J. The Techstars went ahead 2- 0in the next minute of play with one of those fine passing plays by Jay Strickert to Matt Philips and on to the stick of "soft hands" Shane Norton who knows where to put the puck to make it count. Unfortunately before the period finished Port Elgin were able to find the slot behind goalie Jamie Trick and put themselves on the board: Jamie had been solid in net but this team gave him all they had. In the second period Port Perry came out flying again and Ryan Puckrin made a great shot from just over the blue line to catch the Port Elgin goalie flat. Assisting on his goal was Gavin Baxter and Brad Shanley. Port Perry was looking good and we could feel that win. However, Port Elgin is a good fast team who never gives up and before we knew it we were on the tail end of a 7-3 game and couldn't recoup. We are looking forward to Saturday night at 9 p.m. in Port Perry's arena because we know Port Elgin is going to find its a different game on such a large ice surface. Come out and help support our team of fine players!
