PETER HVIDSTEN / PORT PERRY STAR Port Perry Curling Club hosted the 4th annual Labatt's Men's Open Bonspiel Saturday night with the Bruce Grundy rink from the Boulevard Club in Toronto taking top honors with a score of 45 points. A local team skipped by Scott Howey was runner-up with 43 points. Lumbermen win On March 12, Scugog Lumber played host to Whitby Auto Wreckers in game two of the Atom House League playoffs. The Auto Wreckers gave the Lumbermen a rough ride as they won 8-0. Both Greg Lans- dell and Dan Bonser had two goals and an assist each. Beau Jolicoeur had a pair of goals with singles to Cameron Mac- Donald and Matt Tillart. Single assists were awarded to Jeff Da- nilko, Michael Giannini, Came- ron Vernest and Cameron Mac- Donald. Despite the score, Shane Fischer played a strong game in goal for Scugog Lum- ber. On March 14, the Lumber- men played in the annual Atom House League tournament in Port Perry. They lost their first game to East Gwillimbury 4-3. Scoring for Scugog were Glen Thompson and Andrew Doug- las with a goal and an assist each. Trevor Robins had a sin- gle goal. Game two was an exciting match against Penetang. The Lumbermen prevailed 3-2 in overtime. Jamie McQuaid got the "big goal" from Adam Doug- las. Trevor Robins assisted by Adam Douglas and Jon Rogal- ski from Mike Sytsma complet- ed the scoring. Shane Fischer played well in goal. - Scugog Lumber and Whitby Auto Wreckers played off in the consolation final. Again Whitby had the Lumbermen's number as they won 6-0. Whitby scorers were Beau Jolicoeur with two goals and an assist, Cameron MacDonald, Jeff Danilko, Mike Giannini and Mitt Tillart with a goal and an assist. Cameron Vernest and Rick Denike had two assists, with a single to Greg Lansdell. A good day of hockey for all involved. On March 19, Scugog Lumber defeated Port Perry Lions 4-3 and advanced to the champion- ship game for Atom House League. Andrew Kenny paced the Lumbermen attack with two goals. Adam Douglas and Jon Rogalski shot single mark- ers. Glen Thompson and Darrvl Knight added single assists each. Brian Harris and Alex Hutchinson helped Shane Fis- cher's steady play in goal. Robert Sheehan led the Lions attack with two goals. Tyler Lu- cus had a single goal and Don- ald Campbell chipped in an as- sist. Derek Elliot made some good saves in goal. This was a tight checking playoff game with exciting play until the fi- nal buzzer! Novice house league In the third game of the round robin series, Re/Max and Port Perry Printing tied their game with two each. The fans were on the edge of their seats for the entire game. The goals for Re/Max were scored by Tyler Lee. Derek Bond and Pat Lewis were the goal scorers for the Printers. Assisting on the plays were David McGarry, Tyler Weisflock and Luke Pilkey. The netminder for Re/Max was Pe- ter Konstantinopoulos and for Port Perry Printing Mark Lott Van Camp defeated the Hau- gens squad by tive goals. Chris McKitterick came up with two goals and an assist. Joey Lane had two goals and two assists. Joseph Kolinsky and Pierce Jones were also goal scor- ers.Paul Phillips and Pierce Jones were credited with as- sists. The lone Haugens goal was scored with three seconds remaining in the third period by Kevin Gloster, assisting on the play was Jordon Froats. The goaltenders were Tyler Webb for Van camp and Scott Honey for Haugens. Pineridge Tweens victorious Well folks it had to happen. We beat Oshawal!! So you're say- ing, 'so what it's only one game!' Well you're right except we've been trying all season to hand a loss to them but only came close a couple of times. Our girls were ready, they were up, they had the attitude, they were going to show Oshawa what team play was all about. I must explain at this time a few lineup changes that the coaching staff (great people the coaching staff) made for this contest. They took scoring sen- sation Jenn 'Backhand' Donnel- ly and put her in net, do you be- lieve it! Not only that, they put the best tween goalie in the league, Jenn Hammond, at for- ward. And you know what? These girls can play any darn position you put them in. Both girls were fantastic. We also in- vited Janine Hammond (that's right Jenn's sister) a raw rookie to come play for us. Of course the coaching staff had to give her a crash course in ringette. Yeah Right!! Oshawa scored first at the five minute mark of the first and they must have to thinking 'hey we've beat these girls every game, looks like we'll do it again.' Our rookie forward Jenn Hammond put a great pass on Leanne Holt's stick and she made no mistake sliding it past the Oshawa goalie. A minute later Oshawa scored to go ahead once more. A great solo effort by Leanne late in the first knotted the game at two. Oshawa closed out the scoring in the final minute to end the first 3-2. Now I told you earlier about the raw rookie Janine and how the coaches gave her a crash course on ringette. Well she's a quick study. Melissa Hooker spotted Janine breaking for the Oshawa net and made one of those passes we've been practic- ing all year. Janine's scintillat- ing (have been dying to use that word) wrist shot was by the Oshawa goalie before she knew it. Oshawa went ahead for the last time in the game at the six minute mark of the second. Half a minute later our for- ward (goalie) Jenn Hammond showed that not only can she stop shots she can score as well. Heads up passing by Diana Burnett put Jenn in perfect po- sition to blast one by the Oshawa netminder. Well the game was tied for the fourth time. There were three minutes on the clock. Those two Hammond girls get along pretty good for sisters. The younger one Jenn, fed the older one Janine, a beauty pass. Janine put a canonating (have been dying to use that word as well) wrist shot, by the Oshawa netminder. With a second on the clock Janine scored into an empty net to end the game 5-4 for Port Perry. I gotta tell you the Pineridge defense of Diana Burnett, Me- lissa Hooker, Cathy Cooper and Jenn Imrie played the tight checking type of game that has become their trademark. They made every effort to stop the Oshawa offense from getting any quality shots on Jenn. And our forwards Jenn and Janine Hammond, Leanne Holt, Mary Justynski, Lisa Lefort, Amelie Leveille and Amy Wilson played super. Backchecking, pestering, forechecking, setting up plays, they did it all and more. Great game girls. Doormen lose heartbreaker at home On Saturday, March 19, the Scugog Overhead Doors played host to Mooretown in game three in their best three-out-of- five All-Ontario Finals. Both teams came out flying and test- ing the other goalie early and of- ten but both goalies had come to play. Alex Wordley put a big hit on a Mooretown forward at 12:00 which slowed him down a tad. At 11:52 Nick Pelyk was in close on the Mooretown goaltender but got sent away, shaking his head. Deryk Campbell was playing some good hockey deep in Mooretown territory. Port got into penalty trouble in the first period and Mooretown scored while on the power play. Even after ~~ Mooretown scored, they kept the Port Perry goalie busy when they had Port hemmed in their own zone. Brad Johnston got hurt in Mooretown and was testing his hurt leg in the first period. Mooretown came back down the ice at 4:34 and into the Port Perry zone and scored.on a de- flection to take a 2-0 lead. Port had their chances in the first pe- riod but couldn't capitalize on them. Scott Sanderson was in close on the Mooretown goalie but couldn't score. Port was starting to come on in the dying stages of the first period. Ryan McQuade, David Gainey and Nick Pelyk were all doing good things inside the Mooretown blue line but couldn't get the puck to goin. Port Perry was flying at the start of the second period. Da- vid Gainey, Nick Pelyk and Blayne Kinnunen swooped in on the Mooretown goal but no scoring was done. David Gainey was in all alone on the goalie but he got denied. Jeff Neal put a huge hit on a Mooretown de- fenceman deep in their zone at 13:20. David Gainey, Travis Pickard and Scott Sanderson were all around the Mooretown net. Mooretown escaped and took the play into the Port Perry zone and had Port hemmed in their own end. Tra- vis Pickard put a good pass to Scott Sanderson, up to David Gainey as he split the defence but the Mooretown goaltender was also waiting and held the pack for a whistle. Travis Pick- ard stole the puck from a Mooretown winger and let a hard low shot go that almost caught the Mooretown goalie looking. Scott Sanderson took the play into the Mooretown zone to Ryan McQuade in the corner, back to the point to Jeff Neal and he teed one up and let it fly to the top shelf to make the score 2-1 for Mooretown. Justin Sheehey had a good rush going at 3:13 and let a hard shot go and picked the re- bound up and tried a wrap- around. Port's defence of Chris Jones, Jeff Neal, Aaron Cham- bers, Ryan Moynes, Ryan McQuade and Scott Harper were all playing well, trying to hold body and soul together un- til the offence could get going. Alex Wordley planted a good hit deep in Mooretown territory to cause a big turnover and allow another Port Perry scoring chance at 2:26. Mooretown had a two-on-one coming over the Port Perry blue line and Scott Harper made a diving slide to break up the play at 1:49. At 1:03 David Gainey, the Port Perry Captain was in all alone but got robbed by the Moore- town goalie. Jeff Neal and Ryan McQuade teamed up to nullify another good Mooretown attack and send it down the ice. The third period was fast moving again and both teams were really pressing but the goalies were coming up big. Port was trapped inside their own blue line and Mooretown was on the power play. Moore- town scored at 11:49 to give them a 3-1 lead. Mooretown had closed down the centre of the ice and Port Perry was forced to go wide at the Moore- town blue line, keeping the usu- ally potent defence at the out- side boards and making the of- fence look kind of ordinary. Ryan Moynes was playing an- other good game on the Port Perry blue line and was taking a lot of abuse in front of the Port Perry net for all his troubles. Mooretown was content to hold on to the two goal lead and keep the Port offence wide. At 2:45, Ryan McQuade was in close but got stoned. At 1:40 Port pulled their goaltender in favor of an extra attacker. Port didn't score but neither did Mooretown, even though the puck came really close to the empty net a couple of times. The horn went to end the third period and the game, with Port Perry being de- feated 3-1. Playing in goal for Port Perry was Corey Branton. Mooretown outshot Port Perry 27-24. Next game is this Saturday, March 26 at 7 p.m. To all the senior citizens out there that may have nothing special to do Saturday, come on out and take in some Peewee hockey at its best.
