Many years ago, party guests often sneered at me who said, "No thank you, I do not drink, do drugs or smoke, as I am the one driving tonight". Today, all over Canada, the person who stays sober - now called a desig- nated driver - is socially accept- ed and respected. I have been doing this for the past 40 years. Putting your own designated driver program to work is easy. One person in a group agrees not to drink alcohol or use other impairing drugs, at a certain party or social event, so they can drive their friends home safely. At the next party, some- one else takes a turn. Although the concept is sim- ple and increasing in populari- ty, not all groups use designat- ed drivers. Some people are afraid they will miss out on something if they volunteer to take a turn driving. What they do not realize is that taking turns within a group of friends or relatives saves lives. It is much better to miss out on a hangover once in a while, than to miss a dear friend as a result of a vehicle crash. Friends and motorists be- ware of service station rip-offs if travelling south this year. I hear the area of particular con- cern is Interstate 75 in the southeast United States, also here in Canada. Over the years, attempts were made to bilk motorists through trickery, fraud and in- timidation. I have heard nu- merous cases of slashed fan belts and tires, oil squirted on fuel pumps and shock absorbers that are among some of the methods employed in this rack- et. The most recent trick ap- pears to be squirting coolant on the radiator and suggesting rad replacement or problems with the fan clutch. In order to protect yourself against service station rip-offs, the first step is to have your ve- hicle thoroughly checked over by your own mechanic before starting out on a trip. At all times when you stop to purchase fuel, get out of your vehicle and watch the service person as they check out any- thing around the vehicle or un- der the engine hood. If you must leave your vehicle, wait until all service has been per- formed, then move the vehicle away from the pumps. If the service station atten- dant should suggest that there is anything wrong with your ve- hicle, you should always insist on verification before spending money on an unnecessary vehi- cle repair. When buying a re- placement part, insist that you keep the defective part for later checking. It is also helpful to pay by means of your credit card should it later develop that you have been victimized (as I have) you have a good record of the dealings. Fortunately, the majority of service stations and garages are honest. However, it does' pay to be aware of fraudulent practices and watchful when having your vehicle serviced at anytime. As you have this past winter, now spring is here, take more care everywhere you may travel. Roy Walker Smith Port Perry P.S. Scugog Mens Slo-Pitch League's 96-team "Fields of Dreams" tournament sched- uled for all of Scugog Township on July 1. It is not "Field of Dreams" as in the movie. Also, many people are saying "nine-eleven". It is 9-1-1 (nine- one-one), no "eleven" on a phone. 4 Durharz \- LOOSE RUGS Steam || ppoADLOOM Cleaning ypHOLSTERY 3M Scotchguard VVVVVVVVIVVVVYY lasAAAAAAAAAA Laura Secord Chocolates.
