Fred Alton named as Grand Marshall of the Easter Star By Scott Anderson Port Perry Star For one Port Perry man, a re- cent appointment to a high posi- tion in a benevolent organiza- tion is "icingon the cake." Fred Alton was recently ap- pointed Grand Marshall of the Grand Chapter of the Ontario Order ofthe Eastern Star. And in being appointed 'Grand Marshall, Mr. Alton be- comes the first Scugog resident to be selected to this high posi- tion. "Itis quite an honor," he said. "Becoming Grand Marshall was a surprise. Why me I can't say. But it's nice to be saying, "Why me.'?" Mr. Alton was selected by his peers to one of the 18 officer po- sitions. He serves a one-year term ending September, 1994. Mr. Alton will be honored by the local members at a dinner in Uxbridge on April 9. Having been a member of the Order of the Eastern Star for 25 years, Mr. Alton said the ap- pointment was "icing on the cake." He has served as a Mason for 46 years. The Masons and the Order of the Eastern Star are closely re- lated through a special affilia- tion. Only women with specific Masonic affiliation may become members, and men who are Master Masons are eligible. The Order contribute time and energy to various charita- ble organizations. ( "I've found a way of life around the combination of Ma-. sonry and the Eastern Star. It's a wonderful life." Although he has been a Ma- son for almost 50 years and en- joys the comraderie of the other members, Mr. Alton enjoys the affiliation with the Eastern Star. "I think it's where wives and husbands can be together in a charitable aspect and be a won- derful service to people," he said. He said he enjoys working to- gether with the other members for the sake of benevolence. "I think we just enjoy being out together. It's a case where men and women can be out to- gether." Although Mr. Alton's term as Grand Marshall ends in Sep- tember, he intends to stay in- volved in the organization in a consultative manner. He in- tends to continue helping the younger members whenever he can. "I'll always be there for those elected to back them up."
